Chapter 15
Alexis and Riddick left the bedroom and headed to the galley. They were both famished after their time together. Entering, they saw Matt sitting at the table eating a sandwich, 2 other sandwiches sitting at the table across from him. Alexis looked at Riddick and smiled then looked at Matt.
“For us?” She asked politely.
Matt had his face stuffed with his food but nodded eagerly. Riddick pulled out Alexis’s chair for her and sat down after she had been situated. Matt watched them and couldn’t help grinning. Riddick looked at the sandwich as his stomach rumbled.
“Thanks Matt, I’m starved.” Riddick said in a low rumble.
Matt stood up and grabbed 2 beers and a water from the fridge, setting the water in front of Alexis and sliding one of the beers to Riddick.
“Not a problem Riddick, knew you two were going to need it after all that….work.”
Riddick stopped mid swig and almost spit it out. He managed to get most of it down but a little went to his nose. He groaned and grabbed the bridge of his nose squeezing while he willed the pain to go away.
Matt tried not to laugh, as did Alexis, but it was pointless. Matt looked at Alexis and then got quiet. Alexis looked at him and noticing the seriousness in his face she stopped laughing as well. Riddick looked at her then at Matt.
“Mr. Talon came through on the Comm Monitor.” Matt said quietly.
Alexis’s eyes brightened. “Why didn’t you tell me, I wanted to see him.”
Matt gave a dumb glance to Riddick then to her. “Um...maybe because the two of you were indisposed at the time. That’s not the problem though. He heard you…..both of you.”
Alexis covered her mouth in shock and looked at the table horrified. “Are you sure?”
“I told him I was watching a movie while you were sleeping, but I got the feeling he didn’t buy it.”
Alexis looked at Matt then at Riddick, then back to the table. “I need to contact him.” She pushed herself up and walked out of the room.
Riddick watched her as she rounded the galley corner and then heard her door shut.
“Who’s Mr. Talon?” Riddick grumbled at Matt.
Matt looked at Riddick as they both finished their beers. He stood up, grabbed the bottles and set them on the counter, then grabbed two more and handed one to Riddick while he took a long swig out of his.
He sat down and put his hands on the table.
“Mr. Talon is the Council member responsible for sending Alexis to SLAM to find you. He is the one who was behind everything going on.”
Riddick cocked his head to the side, knowing there was more to it. “And.”
Matt took another swig and looked at Riddick. “He’s also Alexis’s father.”
Riddick took a deep breath and looked at his beer bottle. “So if she defies the Council she defies her father as well.” So much for the Riddick curse being lifted.
“Pretty much.” Matt declared.
Riddick looked at him again. “You didn’t want her to get me out of SLAM either did you?” He asked in a quiet tone.
Matt eyed Riddick, his expression showing deep thought before he answered.
“I want Alexis to be happy. I have no problems with who you are, what you have done, or why you were in SLAM. Her happiness is what concerns me, and she seems happy. She also knows what she is getting into by deciding to be with you. And she is still happy. So when she asked me to help get you out of SLAM, bring you aboard the ship, and stay with you, a convicted murderer, while she recouped after reviving you, I never hesitated. The look on her face when she talked about you was enough for me.”
Riddick quirked his brow. “Sounds like you and her are pretty close.”
“I love her to death, I would die for her, and I would kill for her. She’s my best friend.” Matt read Riddick’s face at his remarks, a flicker of jealousy had hit him. “It’s not in the way you think either.” Matt got up and put his empty bottle on the counter and walked to the door. He stopped and looked at Riddick again. “She has been a friend for a long time Riddick. She was there for me when the worst day in my life hit me, and I swore to her I would always be there for her.” With that he walked out towards the cockpit.
Riddick didn’t know what to think as he finished his beer. He really liked Matt the more he had gotten to know him. He still felt the need to act as a threat around him though, he wasn’t really sure why. Old habits die hard he thought to himself.
Riddick stood up and grabbed two beers out of the fridge and headed out of the galley and to the cockpit.
