Chapter 16 – Promises Kept

Will paced around the Commodore’s quarters, waiting for James to return with Jack. After what seemed like forever, he finally heard them come back. Jack was obviously drunk: He was singing THAT SONG again. It sounded like James was trying to quiet him. Will laughed to himself. /Right, like that’s going to work./ He’d tried that several times, to no avail. He figured that, as long as that song kept Jack in a good mood, it was fine if he wanted to sing it 24/7. He sat on the couch with the comforter wrapped around him. His bum still hurt, but as long as he kept still it was all right.

The door opened, and Jack stumbled in, his wrists wrapped in bandages. James followed, trying to keep hold of him. They both crashed to the floor, and James kicked the door closed. He noticed Will and smiled unconvincingly. “He decided to go out and have a drink. Or ten.”

“Or twenty. I’ve never seen him this drunk.” Will walked over, squatting next to his inebriated lover. “Jack, how many did you have?”

Jack reached up and touched Will’s face. “I only ‘ad one bottle, love. Can’t get drunk on one bottle.” He pulled himself up by grabbing Will’s comforter. “Love, I’m not a slave, am I? I’m a freeman, righ’?”

“One bottle?”

“I believe the manacles may have added to the problem. I was told that he became extremely violent when they put them on him. He injured several men quite severely.” James helped both Jack and Will to their feet and into the bedroom.

Will moved onto the bed to the far side to leave room for Jack and James. James tried to get Jack’s clothes off. Unfortunately, Jack was trying to help, which made it take twice as long. Once Jack’s clothes were off, James maneuvered him into the middle of the bed, facing Will. “I’ll be just in the parlor. Call if you or Jack need anything.” He walked out.

Jack woke feeling like he was wearing a human comforter, and he wasn’t far off. He opened his eyes. Will was on his left side, cuddled closely, one arm and one leg wrapped over Jack. James was on his right, positively draped over him, his hand holding Will’s. Jack tried to slip out of their grasp, and was forcibly brought back down by the hands across his chest. He looked at James. “I’ve got to pee, love.”

James smiled and let go of Will, patting his hand and rolling off of Jack. “Are you feeling better this morning?”

“Yes love. I was just feelin’ a mite melancholy last night is all. Do ye think I might be able to get just a bit more rum each day? It keeps me head together.”

Will gingerly sat up. “He’s right. The one drink a day that he’s been getting isn’t nearly enough.”

“I’ll see what I can do.”

Jack got out of bed and used the commode, putting the lid down when he was finished.

James pulled out some clean clothes for all of them, and they got dressed quickly. Just as they finished, there was a knock at the door. Jack bounded into the parlor and answered it. He stood to the side as breakfast was brought in, followed by the doctor, who immediately strode into the bedroom with Jack hot on his heels. He checked Will’s face, neck, ear (the stitches were looking very good), and finally had him lie down on his stomach while he checked the stitches on his bum. “Excellent. You’re healing quite nicely, young man.” He turned to Jack and removed the bandages from his wrists. Somehow, much of the damage had healed. “Amazing, captain. You don’t even need the bandages now.” He looked at his head, mumbled to himself and removed the stitches, then left, still mumbling.

Jack bounded back out of the bedroom and walked back in with breakfast. “Eat up, mates!”

The courtyard of the fort was abustle with soldiers. They were standing around a cleared circle. Several were on crutches or in slings, and seemed just a little bit nervous. Standing around the ring of soldiers were many of the townspeople. They had heard that there would be an exhibition of combat today, and were glad to get away from their daily drudgeries. Even governor Swann was there.

At the appointed time, Commodore Norrington walked out into the circle in the yard. “Today, we shall have the distinct pleasure of witnessing some excellent hand-to-hand combat; that which none of us have seen before.” There was a drum roll, and Jack Sparrow walked into the ring, followed by five soldiers who were all noted for their abilities in unarmed combat. All six men were shirtless, and Jack’s feet were bare.

Loud murmurs went through the crowd (“pirate,” “barbarian,” “Sparrow”). Jack ignored them. He ran a hand through his hair and positioned himself. The Commodore’s voice rang out. “Begin!”

Jack stood there, watching the five men. They towered over him, and two of them must have weighted twice what he did. He licked his lips. The smallest of them, who was known as a great boxer, moved forward, ready to punch Jack. Jack stood there till the last second, then moved to one side, letting the punch move through, then added just a bit of momentum and flipped the boxer onto his ass.

The boxer sat there, wondering what happened, when Jack bent down and helped him up. “You ok, mate?” The boxer nodded.

The second man was the largest. He was known as a brawl fighter. No one in the town had ever beaten him; even gangs of up to five or six had lost to him. He moved in and tried to grab Jack, who skillfully ducked between his legs, stood up and tapped him on the shoulder. The man whipped around, and was thrown a good ten feet, still spinning till his head hit the stone.

The third man was a wrestler, and was on Jack before he had a chance to recover from the second man. He grabbed Jack by the wrists, and held him in a full nelson. Another man moved in to punch him. Jack pushed back slightly, and kicked the man in front of him in the head, then dropping, twisting, and rolling fast enough that the man who was holding him didn’t realize what happened till he landed on the ground, gasping in pain and grabbing himself in the genitals.

Jack was grinning now, and didn’t even seem winded.

The boxer and the last man looked at each other, then at Jack. They moved to either side of him, vying for position. The other men joined them, circling warily. Jack frowned, then grinned again, closing his eyes.

The men attacked from all directions. Two of them immediately collided with each other with a little help from Jack, and the others were busy trying to get past the tornado that was his arms and legs. Bodies flew and crumpled before the audience could see what had really happened.

Norrington applauded, followed closely by the crowd. The five defeated men stood up, shaking their heads. Jack bowed to them, and they managed their ways into the audience.

Norrington waited for the applause to die down. Captain Sparrow has agreed to go three rounds with anyone wishing to earn some money. Anyone who lasts the full three rounds with him wins fifty pounds. Are there any takers?”

People started to murmur to each other. Jack and James both watched the crowd.

A voice called out from the back. “And what if two women want a go at him?”

The crowd laughed. Jack KNEW that voice. It was Anamaria. He looked a little worried, but turned to James and nodded.

Norrington shrugged. “Fifty pounds for each of you then.”

A smallish black lady walked out into the ring. She was dressed in a very high-class gown. The crowd burst into laughter, then stopped suddenly. Elizabeth Swann followed her into the ring, wearing an identical gown. Both wore corsets, and both were beautifully coifed. Norrington looked at Jack and lifted an eyebrow. Jack paled slightly, but turned to James and shrugged.

Governor Swann started to object, but Norrington stopped him. She is the one making the challenge. Neither of us have reason to argue if she wishes to be made a fool.” He turned to the ladies. “Shall you be fighting in your gowns, ladies?” There was more tittering going through the crowd.

Elizabeth smiled. “No, Commodore.” She and Anamaria ripped open their corsets and removed their gowns, revealing loose fitting shirts and breeches. They tossed their shoes onto their gowns, and moved to the center of the ring, smiling.

Norrington smiled. “Begin!”

The ladies circled Jack, looking for an opening. Anamaria moved in first, testing the water with a simple kick. He kept his guard up, and Elizabeth moved in, punching and kicking like a whirlwind. Jack countered, circling away. Anamaria tried to sweep his head, and he caught her foot and flipped her. She landed on her feet and moved in again.

They fought like that for close to thirty straight minutes, nobody believing their eyes at what they saw. Finally, a Will leaped into the ring, dressed much the same as Jack. “Elizabeth!”

She turned and saw him. She grinned and attacked. The audience went wild. After about ten more minutes, Norrington stopped them. “Halt!” All four of the fighters fairly froze, turned to each other and bowed, turned to the audience and bowed, and moved into a diamond to start a practice routine they had done for over a year. The audience applauded profusely, and the foursome bowed, then left the courtyard.

The foursome laughed together as they walked through the halls, straight to Norrington’s quarters. When they arrived, Jack and Will had the ladies sit on one of the couches. Will sent the guard out for tea. Jack walked over to the desk where he saw something that piqued his interest. It was the book that James had been writing in; the copy of his poetry book that he’d made for Jack. He opened it, and found a parchment in it. It was the receipt from the slavers. It had his description on it, and an emancipation statement from Norrington, making him a freeman. Tears appeared in his eyes, and he looked at the inside cover, where there was an inscription. “To a good man, and pirate, from his Commodore. I love you and I shall miss you. James.” The tears began to fall. He turned the pages till he found the poem that James had been writing the night before:

“Sparrow of My Heart – by James Norrington

“Of perfect eyes, black as pools
Of ink in moonlight dearly missed.
Like raven’s eyes, ne’er suffer fools
They call me, longing to be kissed.

“Black braided hair, the beads to be
Treasure, plunder, the spoils of war.
Enraptured by tinkling, wild and free
His trinkets make my heart outpour.

“Noble nose, so straight; refined.
My feather kisses brush its end
In shadow, runs the perfect line.
A sweeter taste than wine can send.

“Sugar sweet lips encircle my length
Delightful pink tongue, my manhood loves.
My love grows daily, my resolve of law wanes.
His freedom: My bondage. Tears from above.”

Jack sat down, weeping, unable to take his eyes off of either the paper in his hands proclaiming his freedom, nor the poem in the book proclaiming James’ love.
