questions

"Paris, this is Achilles" Briseis said, pulling away from the Greek warrior to watch her cousin carefully. Paris surprised her though, by extending his hand in friendship.

"Welcome to Troy Achilles. I only wish there were more of it to show you" He said with a bittersweet smile, but with a genuine attempt to make peace. He had seen what had happened in the garden that night, and knew that Achilles had fought on their side, turning traitor and killing his own king. As much as Paris hated to admit it, he had a solemn respect for the other man. Achilles, equally respectful, extended his hand as well. The two men, one dark and delicately handsome, the other blonde and powerfully muscular, grasped eachothers forearms in greeting. Briseis smiled in relief as she clung to Achilles back.

King Priam then entered the room flanked by his two guards, and stopped short when he caught sight of Achilles. Waving his hand at his guards to dismiss them, he strode quickly up to where the visitor stood. Achilles watched the old King; although he was getting on in age, the way he moved revealed the stealth and grace of a once-powerful warrior. His hands were toughened by the sword, yet his face softened with wisdom. Priam stopped when in front of Achilles, and said nothing as he stared the Greek in the eyes, unblinking. He surprised all then, by slowly kneeling, bowing his head down in front of Achilles.

"I have heard tell of you Achilles, they say that you could have given Agamemnon Troy on a silver platter, but instead you turned the tides for our broken city by turning on he who sent you. We owe everything to you."

Impressed by the King's humility, Achilles bent down and helped Priam to his feet.

"My Lord, there exist those who have an intense lust for power, but do not deserve such privelage. You are a far better King than he." Priam nodded, accepting the complement, and then smiled at Briseis, seeming to know full well the reason for the warrior's appearance in Troy. He may have been an old man, but he knew of what went on in his family even when they didnt share such secrets outright with him.

"Come Achilles, let me show you Troy." Priam declared, and took leave of the small gathering. Achilles respectfully followed, dipping his head in farewell.

Briseis stayed behind, and braced herself for the barrage of questions she was about to recieve. She glanced about the room, immediately aware of everyone uneasiness, but then met the intense eyes of Paris, and knew she would have to explain.

"Briseis, I assume you have something to share with us?" He questioned, in a most protective, yet unnerving way. Luckily, before Briseis thought of something intelligent to say, Andromache stepped in.

"Paris, you have heard stories of Achilles' heroics for the past several years; has even one of those tales explained why he might be tempted to slay his own king in the most ferocious battle that this century has seen? Have any of those fables described why he might show up here at the ruined city of Troy, a beaten man? Have you head a single story in which Achilles has faltered in the presence of a woman? No, not a single legend would explain why he is here, prostrate in front of a woman, a woman who he so readily accepts as the mother of his child? Andromache reasoned, passion filling her voice in a way Briseis had not often heard. Paris looked sullen for a moment, before stepping up to Briseis.

"Briseis, ever since you were young, I have adored you. I love you as a sister, and wish only that your every desire be filled. Tell me he makes you happy, and I shall throw away any feeling of resentment I feel towards that man." Paris told her, her face in his hands. Tears appeared in her eyes, as she leaned into her dear cousins touch.

"Paris, I see so much of your brother in you." Briseis glanced towards Andromache, who was now becoming teary eyed. "I cannot tell you how much you mean to me, and how much your opinion weighs in my mind. Please know, I am not blind in this matter. I too have heard tales of Achilles glory, of his winnings, and of his sometimes cruel actions. But I can say to you with every reassurance, I love that man. When I was so close to giving up, so close to allowing Agamemnon to win, he was there. He threatened Agamemnon's life in front of the entire army to guarantee that I would not be another one of the King's whores. When I thought I was no longer capable of continuing on, a prisoner in an enemy's camp, that man gave me the will to live. I love him more than I can describe." She then looked over at Helen's wary face. "I know exactly what it feels like to want to risk your life, you very being, on the feelings of one man." Then her eyes locked on Andromache. "Please, give him a chance for me. I love this man with every part of my being; when I saw him this morning, it was like my soul was finally complete. Please tell me you understand." She said, tears now streaming down her cheeks. As the women stood in stunned silence, their tears echoing hers, Paris stepped forward and embraced her.

"To see you happy, I would welcome Hades himself. " He said, embracing her trembling form. In her ear though, he whispered, " I should have known, you would only be content with the most powerful warrior in Greece. Only you could bring the deadliest killer of the civilized world to his knees." He whispered, with a grin spreading across his handsome face. Briseis smiled in return, relieved that her family accepted her relationship openly.

I know its short, but I will only be able to post one or two more chapters before I head home for christmas break. I promise you, the final chapters and the conclusion will be posted soon after my return early January, but I ask your patience until then. Please keep up the reviews! Believe it or not, you guys really are my muses, so the more feedback, the more I can write. Keep up the good work!
