Pain

I know it's taking a while for new chapters, but between work and my RL, I haven't been able to write as much as I would like. I'm not giving up on the story or anything like that, just being slow working on it.

She dressed after realizing he wasn’t there, and decided to go to her room first. She wasn’t bothered as she walked through the halls, though she heard some murmurings as she passed some people. She wasn’t surprised, given what had happened.

She opened the door to her room, and as she walked in, she saw a staff of some sort being held by a man wearing a uniform. As she passed the door frame, he tapped the staff on the floor hard, making some sort of globe rise from the top.

“Who are you?” She frowned as she started to step further into her quarters.

At that moment, Kendra came in from the bathroom, and almost immediately realized what was going on. She threw herself across the room, shoving Kylie hard out the door, but not far enough as the explosion happened.

Kylie was thrown even further by the blast, her head hitting a wall, and through her blurred vision could see the crater that the explosion had left. At the outside of that circle was a woman’s arm, cut off just above the elbow that she could recognize as Kendra’s.

She let out a soft whimper before the pain took her into unconsciousness.

“Fractured skull, definite severe concussion, cracked ribs. She also has numerous contusions and abrasions as well My Lord.” The medic’s voice came to her as she came awake, she tried ignoring the pain she felt. She was still alive. “She was lucky to survive the explosion.”

The pain flooded her body, pulling her back into the soothing blackness of unconciousness.

She heard footsteps as someone left the room, and she opened her eyes slowly. She was in some sort of medical bay, the lights very dim, so she couldn’t make out much beyond the curtain that lay to one side of her bed.

Hearing more footsteps, she closed her eyes again, making her breathing steady and regular, feigning sleep. The steps came close to the bed, then stopped.

She didn’t jump when she felt a hand touching her cheek softly, a gentle caress from a man’s hand. She opened her eyes slowly to see Riddick sitting in a chair beside her bed, his hand the one she felt. She gave a small smile, her hand moving up to cover his, letting out a small gasp of pain.

“So that’s why the lights are so low.” She whispered, voice hoarse from how dry her throat felt. “Don’t worry, it’ll be a lot harder then that to be rid of me.”

He gave a slight smirk, and helped her sit up, giving her a small cup of water. He shook his head slightly as she drank. “Kendra…she”

Kylie shivered. “I know…I saw…well, I saw enough.”

She lay silently looking up at the ceiling after handing the cup back to him and watching him set it on a table.

“Probably someone who is allied with that woman.” She finally spoke out loud. She wasn’t sure she wanted to talk about what she was really thinking, so she chose to speak about what happened. The silence in the room had been deafening.

He grunted an acknowledgement before the doctor walked in, interrupting anything else he might have said.

“Glad to see you are awake Lady Kylie.” When she frowned in confusion at him, he simply smiled at her. “You have earned the title in my eyes, after saving Lord Riddick’s life more then once. You can call me Doc, it keeps things a lot simpler, since I am the only doctor here anyway. Now, how are you feeling?”

“I hurt like hell, but I’ll survive it.”

Doc nodded, then started to examine her. Riddick stayed seated, moving only when he was in Doc’s way, and then only a few feet away. Finally the doctor stood back and wrote something in a folder of some sort.

“You’ll be just fine. Your ribs and head have a while yet before they fully heal, but they’re on their way and your ribs set well. Your cuts and such have healed up nicely, with no scars too.”

Kylie looked between the two men, frowning again. “Wait, how long was I out?”

Riddick glanced at Doc, who shook his head and sighed. “It’s been over a month. The combination of the injuries you attained in the….fight with Dame Vaako and the explosion were enough to overload your body.”

“I see.” She laid back against her pillow and watched the doctor leave after telling her that he would have a nurse bring her some food soon.

The silence filled the room again, and finally Riddick rose, without saying a word, and walked out.
