Ch16
Chapter Sixteen: The merest flutter…
The nurse came bustling in a couple of hours later, a huge grin on her face. “Apparently he had short black hair, rather tanned and really tall with rectangular glasses.”
Liljana’s heart sank.
“Do you know who it was, then?”
“That was my older brother…”
“I don’t suppose he’s single?” She joked.
“Yeah.” Liljana replied distantly.

As Liljana slept that night, she didn’t notice the tall, dark haired man enter the room silently and sit watching her. She didn’t move when he pressed a soft kiss to her lips. When he apologised. When he told her that he loved her.
His hand caressed the side of her face, but he froze when she mumbled, “Sands…” and turned towards him in her sleep.
They were laying tangled together in the blissful aftermath of mind blowing orgasms. Sands’ fingers were playing with Liljana’s hair, getting caught in the occasional knot. Liljana was drawing invisible patterns on his chest with her finger and smiled when his hand trailed down to caress her cheek.
Liljana woke up with a hand caressing the side of her face. She blinked in the dark and let her eyes adjust to the face that was beside her. She couldn’t help the tears that escaped her eyes. The disappointment she felt yet again.
“I’m so sorry, Sis. I’m sorry. I should have been at home more, lately. I love you.”
“I fell asleep in the bath-there isn’t much you could have done, Rob.”
“I know, but mom and dad said you were feeling down before that…”
“Yeah, well…”
“Anything I can help with?”
Liljana chuckled humourlessly, coughing then answering, “I don’t think so. It’s nice to see you, though.”
“Yeah. Two years suddenly seems a lot longer.” He leaned forwards and hugged Liljana before pulling back and standing up, “Well, I have to be off. I’ll be seeing you soon, lil’ sis.”
She smiled softly and watched him leave before letting a fitful sleep claim her.
Little did Liljana know, her brother wasn’t the only visitor that she had that night.
It was getting on for 3am when he slipped through the door, past the receptionist, unseen and into Liljana’s room.
He pulled the chair up the bed and sat quietly until he could think of what to say.
“I wish I could tell you…how much I’ve missed you. How much I love you. How much I want to come back to you. I’m sorry for how much I’ve hurt you. Everyone I care about gets hurt. I should know that by now. I wish we could go to Mexico like we said we would. Maybe buy a house in a few years. Look at what you’ve done to me, Lil. I’m sitting here waiting for you to wake up and never let me leave. I want to stay here. In your arms. Forever.
But I can’t. I’ve been chosen for this. Chosen. This is my life now. Nothing else matters.”
Sands stood, kissed her lips and closed his heart to the world.
