Chapter 16- Aftermath.
The whole Parr family ran down a long hallway of a government hospital, usually reserved for wounded soldiers and FBI agents. In fact the personal who had been injured at the convention centre were already on their way to the facility.
Rick Dickers and Elizabeth Price, better known as Mirage, were standing outside a doorway. They looked as sombre as they would at a funeral and for a second Bob and Helen believed the worst. Then Elizabeth spoke and gave them only a partial relief. “The doctors are performing their final examinations now, they’ll be out in a moment.” it gave relief because examinations were not performed on a dead person, not in a hospital room anyway; only in a morgue. Bob and Helen looked at each other. Helen had tears in her eyes and Bob seemed close himself. Dash wasn’t faring much better. Even young Jak Jak was strangely quiet.
“I won’t lie to you.” Dickers said gravely. “it doesn’t look good.”
“I’m going in” said Bob. But before he could act the door to the room opened several doctors and nurses stepped out. Many of them continued walking but one stayed behind to talk. He didn’t bat an eyelid at the group of people in civilian clothing. He knew all about Supers and their secret identities; you didn’t work at a government hospital for years without learning some secrets.
“What’s going on doctor?” Helen jumped in. The doctor looked upset, like he was about to cry. He had seen many things in his time but nothing as terrible as this.
“It’s a miracle she’s even alive.” He said. “You have a strong daughter.” He said to Helen and Bob.
“She takes after her mother.” Bob said quietly. Helen looked at him for a second and back to the doctor.
“Will she be okay?” She begged. The doctor did not deliver good news with his next sentence.
“It’s impossible to say.” He said gravely. “Your daughter sustained a beating I can’t even begin to contemplate in my darkest nightmares. She has sustained severe bruising across 80% of her body. She had three broken ribs, minor internal bleeding. Severe trauma that I haven’t seen outside war zones.” He deep a deep breath, preparing himself for the difficult news that he was about to deliver. “But the worst is the spinal trauma.”
“What’s that” Bob pressed. He wasn’t a doctor he hadn’t ever heard of ’Spinal trauma’ before.
“The spinal cord is a large bunch of nerves that is protected by the spine, running from the brain to the rest of the body. If the spinal cord is broken it leaves a person permanently paralysed; there is no cure for it. Spinal trauma occurs to the spinal chord when the spine is damaged in a such a way that the spinal chord ends up damaged. Not broken.” He jumped in, noting the increasingly distressed looks on their faces. “Broken is irreversible, but damaged, there is a good chance of recovery. From all the accounts agent Price and agent Dickers have been able to gather; your daughter suffered a severe spinal trauma by being bent back. It was a miracle Psychewave stopped when he did; another inch or two would have produced permanent paralysis, no doubt he heard her spine cracking as the bones were put under pressure.”
“What does all of this mean doctor?” Helen asked in a panicked voice. The doctor sighed and shook his head. “We won’t know the extent of the damage until she recovers consciousness. She arrived here unconscious and it seems she’s not ready to wake up yet. Right now that’s a good thing; I think the agony would be too much for her.”
soon “But what about that damage you were talking about?” Bob jumped in.
“She may suffer from anything from partial numbness to a temporary paralysis. The recovery time itself also individual. It depends on the circumstances of each injury and person. I’m sorry, We’ve done all we can and cannot help her any more until she wakes up.”
“Can we see her?” Helen pressed. The doctor nodded his head.
“She’s asleep right now. But she can probably hear you. Maybe a few familiar voices would do her good.”
Slowly the entire Parr family stepped into the room. It was dimly lit. The lights were off and the curtains were drawn. But the sleeping form of Violet could be seen lying on the bed. She had tubes leading from her body up to a bag of blood and one of clear liquid. She was still wearing her Super mask, but her suit was gone and replaces with a hospital gown. Bandages were on her arms and legs and, unseen below the gown, were bandages along with the plastic board to hold her spine in place and prevent further trauma. A piece of surgical gauze was on her face, covering a deep cut that had happened to her cheek when she had been thrown among a pile a smashed lighting rig. Helen thought it might scar, but hoped it wouldn’t.
“Violet?” Dash spoke first and stepped up to the bed. He grasped his sisters hand but didn’t say anything else. It was baby Jak Jak that spoke next. Neither of the adults could find any words for the situation. “Vi vi.” He said. The young kid was tiny and young but he seemed to realise the gravity of the situation. He fell silent afterwards and nuzzled into his mothers chest.
“We’re all here honey.” Bob spoke. He stepped over to the other side of the bed and took Violet’s other hand. “We’re all here for you.”
From the shadow’s stepped a person came into the light. How long he had been there none of them knew, but everyone guessed he had not moved since Violet had arrived. Shifter was still dressed in his Shifter Super Suit. He had stepped into a corner and been quiet, and had gone unnoticed until he had made himself known. He had probably seen everything the doctors had done to her. Helen looked at him with anger but it was Bob that acted first.
“Why didn’t you help her?” He shouted at him. He pushed Shifter up to the wall, but not through it and Shifter knew he was restraining himself as much as possible. “Why?”
“I COULDN’T” Shifter yelled back at him. Tears rolled down his face. “Psychewave…I couldn’t…I just.” He slid down the wall and sat on the floor and shook his head furiously. “I just couldn’t until I saw her fall.”
No one said a word. Their attention was being turned back to Violet. She was still unconscious but now all of them were hoping, preying that she would be alright, that she would live and, more importantly, she would be the same Violet that they had always known.
There were more drastic things to worry about at that moment though; Psychewave was loose and he and his companions, whoever they were, were going to feel on a role with their success. With Violet gone; the whole city was in danger.
To be continued.
