White and Black Pearls - Chapter 14
Chapter Fourteen
‘Jack.’
‘Celestiana!’
The lovers embraced upon the deck of the Black Pearl, but when Jack leaned in to kiss her on the mouth, she turned away and he managed only to kiss her cheek. Jack frowned in confusion and drew back, waiting for explanation.
‘Tell me how you lost those six pearls.’
‘Oh. Well…’ He splayed his hands out and took a breath, ready to begin an elaborate story, but her cutting stare took the wind out of his sails. ‘I traded them.’
‘You traded them,’ she parroted sharply.
He waved one hand in the air. ‘Well… lost them. As I told you before. In a trade that I didn’t think would happen… in a bet of sorts, a wager. Which I lost. So they were lost but also traded, because in exchange I got this.’ Jack procured his compass. ‘Leads me to the thing I want most on this planet, you see.’
Her eyes narrowed. ‘Tell me how you lost those six pearls,’ she whispered again. The news had been freshly relayed to her only minutes ago but she had to hear it from him.
‘Tia Dalma…’
‘Calypso,’ Celestiana corrected curtly.
‘Calypso,’ Jack agreed with a slight wince. ‘I sought her help. I needed a way to hunt for the treasures of this world.’
‘Did you find it between her legs?’ she lobbed at him.
‘Ah. Well.’ He hemmed and hawed. ‘Sacrifices were made…’
‘Sacrifices!’ she shrieked, unable to restrain herself and put up with this humiliation any longer. ‘You went to my sister’s bed and gave away the pearls that I gave to you in exchange for a compass, when I could do the very same job that compass does, and better still, I can create winds to take you to those places while all the compass can do is point the way!’
‘You’re not listening!’ Jack assured, trying to keep his tone reasonable. ‘Let me explain it all. You’re only around sometimes and yes you could provide the wind which would take me there but that would only be during the once every few years that you come to see me! This compass, while only a mere trinket and toy compared to your greatness, it can lead me anywhere and it’s always here at my side, so I can hunt for the treasures I want at my own pace and when the opportunity rises, rather than waiting around for you. It’s not all as bad as it sounds; you just have to let me explain. You’re always leaving before I can say everything I want to elaborate upon your person. Your beautiful, radiant person, I might say.’
‘Flattery at this point only makes me angrier Jack,’ Celestiana whispered. She was wavering between tears of sorrow and tears of joy but refused to let them spill as she stood before him; she couldn’t even stand to look at him any more. ‘But you know what? It’s fine. I said long ago that I’d step back out of your life and let you do as you wanted and pleased without interfering as much as possible. Go hunt your all important treasures now that you have the Black Pearl back; I hope you have more success with that than you did with that Aztec gold.’
‘No see, that’s exactly the point!’ he chimed in. ‘It’s not treasure for the sake of treasure… it’s not because I wanted to go after something shiny! I wanted that gold because…’
‘It’s over, Jack,’ she interrupted. ‘I can’t… I can’t take this any more! I can’t stand it!’ It took all of her willpower to keep the tears from falling. ‘Enjoy your treasure hunting for the next short while, until Davy Jones comes after you to collect his debt. It’s probably better this way; I shouldn’t have interfered in the first place. Goodbye.’
‘Celestiana!’ Jack bellowed, lunging forward with his hand out. She disappeared before he could grab her, and Jack’s momentum carried him stumbling forward until he fell face-first onto the ship’s deck, sprawled out across the floorboards. His compass tumbled out of his hand and when it stopped, it flipped open. He lifted his head and stared at it as the arrow began to move, and his chest ached painfully like somebody was standing upon it as he watched the arrow start to spin uncontrollably, the affirmations of what he wanted to find most on the planet shattered and clouded.
