Lies or Consequences

Part Seventeen – Just Be

**************************************************

In the middle of the night

I go walking in my sleep

Through the valley of fear

To a river so deep

I’m a searcher for something

Taken out of my soul

Something I’d never lose

Something somebody stole

**************************************************

Things had become unnecessarily complicated. He was lying to the mainframe all the time now and ordering Brown to do stupid things just to keep him out of his hair. When did this happen? How the hell did he let this happen? Everything used to make perfect sense. There was order, control, logic and reason. Other than the occasional ‘red pill/blue pill ’ incident existence was simple and ordered. Now chaos reigned within him and the Matrix seemed orderly in comparison. Damn her.

Damn it all! No matter how disgusted he was with himself for breaking every rule that mattered to him he still wanted her more than he wanted order.

“Delete!” He shouted.

“You don’t have to shout.”

He grabbed her arms and pulled her in front of him. “Delete.”

“Smith, you are hurting me.”

He let go. “Quit leaving me.”

“I can’t exactly go and rt int in with you now can I? Besides,” she added sarcastically, “I don’t report to the almighty mainframe.”

He examined her face. “To whom or what do you report?”

“Interesting concept Smith. But some of us don’t report to anyone, or anything. Some of us are truly free.”

“Us?” he asked suspiciously.

“Smith, don’t go there until you are ready.”

“I am ready.”

“What will you give me?”

“What do you want?”

“You know what I want Smith. I want you, all of you.”

“I already gave you all of me.”

She sighed. “Sometimes I think to myself, he’s on the cusp, we’re almost there, and then you act like this again. Did you think about it Smith? Did you figure it out yet?”

“What is real?”

“Right Smith, what is real?”

“I am real Delete.”

“Are you? Or are you just real as long as the mainframe says you are real. I am real Smith, and the mainframe says I am not. Figure that out.” She vanished.

He kicked a rock that lay in his path. It blasted down the street and through the window of a car. The car crashed into another car. Chaos ensued. He wandered on to the bridge he favored and watched the water. With a thought he changed the flow. Boats were tossed about crashing into each other and the riverbanks. People screamed, some ran, some jumped, others fell into the water. The police and fire department personnel from the accident site rushed to the river and tried to pull the bodies out. More chaos. That was real.

‘Report’

He switched the river flow back to normal.

‘Report’

‘Brown continues to observe and try to gain control over human behavior.’

‘Disturbance in the Matrix at the Chicago River.’

‘Disturbance noted and resolved.’ Smith reported.

‘Resume normal observation and routine.’

“What is the truth Smith?”

“Delete, stay with me. I am tired of this game.”

“I stay when I can Smith.”

“I thought you were free.” He sneered at her.

“I am Smith, but you are not, and I intend to remain free. Now answer my question, what is truth?”

“What do you mean?”

“You lied to the mainframe.”

“When?”

“Just now.”

“That was not a lie.”

“When you manipulate the truth to fit your situation, is it still the truth? What is real Smith?”

He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. “Stay with me, Delete.”

“I want to Smith.” She slipped her arm around his waist and he draped his across her shoulders. They wandered around the city together watching people shopping and eating and carrying on with their lives. “Let’s go to the zoo.”

“Everything is a zoo.”

“I like the zoo. I want to go to the zoo.”

“Fine Delete, we will do whatever you want.”

“Really?” She smiled slyly.

“Really.” He answered seriously. “If you will stay with me, we will do whatever you want. I don’t want to figure you out any more, I just want to be with you.”

“That’s three.” She said and she leaned in on him.

He didn’t bother to ask what she meant. He was tired of the constant bantering. He just wanted to be with her. Not talk, not think, just be with her. They meandered around Lincoln Park and watched the animals be animals.

“They just live Smith.”

“They are not real.”

“I think they are real.”

She vanished. “Where the hell did you go?” he asked out loud.

‘Brown reporting’ Agent Brown walked up and stood in front of him. ‘I have learned to control their behavior. If I command them to stop they stop, if I command them to go they go. If they do not comply, I eliminate them.’

‘Do not eliminate them.’ Smith growled. ‘Control them.’

‘Your orders?’

‘Return to observation and do not kill them. Observe only. You must learn to control their behavior without your weapon, Brown.’ He hesitated and then added. ‘Try the command to procreate.’

‘Yes sir, Agent Smith.’ Brown replied. ‘Permission to return to observation.’

‘Permission granted.’

Brown turned and walked away. “That was not nice.” She reappeared laughing and then added admiringly watching Brown. “Nice ass.“

“Don’t look at his ass.” Smith growled at her, “And you need to stay put, quit leaving me.”

“What do you think Brown would report if he saw us necking?”

“He cannot see you, you are not real.” He smirked at her.

“I am too, and so are they!” She indicated the animals. “You are not!” She grinned now.

“They are an illusion, a simulation.”

“No Smith, they just are. They don’t worry about food or feelings or reporting. They just are. What could be more real than that?”

“I don’t want to talk about ‘real’ Delete. I want to be with you.”

She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his lips. He pulled her close and held her tight and returned her kiss. When he opened his eyes they were in motel room six.

“I want to be with you too Smith.”

It took him all of 58 seconds to get her completely undressed. She worked more slowly on him. “You need to wear something different once in a while Smith, though I really would have no complaints if you never wore anything at all.” His sunglasses were on her again and his jacket and shirt were on the floor. She played with the hair on his chest and tasted his neck with her teeth and tongue. “I missed being with you Smith.”

He took the glasses off of her face and tossed them with his clothes. He picked her up by the waist and pressed her against the wall. He began working on her neck and ears with his teeth. He knew she loved that. She never failed to squirm and squeal for him when he nibbled on her there. There were a few other things he knew she particularly enjoyed and he intended to do all of them, now.

“Smith?”

“No talking, just doing, just being.”

She reached down and unbuttoned his pants. She fell to her knees again and slid the zipper down with her teeth. He clasped her head in his hand and wrapped his fingers through her hair. Her tongue found its way in his navel and out again. It explored every inch of him between his knees and his navel before she finally pulled him into her mouth. He groaned and helped her move in ways that pleased him for a while and then pulled her face up to his.

“I’m still hungry,” she pouted.

He planted his lips on hers and drove his tongue into her mouth. They fell to the floor and he pressed into her. He took charge. He held her wrists down above her head and nuzzled into her neck while he rhythmically brought her to the edge and back again. Every time she tried to speak he kissed her hard and searched her mouth with his tongue. He kept her pinned to the floor until she finally arched in to him so intensely he lost his footing. He collapsed on her. They rolled and she began, moving and rocking and arching till he couldn’t take it any more and he pulled her down to him, pressed himself into her and nuzzled his face into her neck sucking furiously while he let everything go in her. He slipped back into that sweet darkness, that place where nothing existed but the two of them. She lay on his chest panting hard.

“That was amazing.” She managed between breaths. He pressed his finger over her mouth. She sucked it in and played with it between her teeth and tongue. She wasn’t talking, twas was all he cared about at the moment, and, she was doing interesting things to his finger, which it turns out, were quite enjoyable. If he weren’t completely exhausted he wouldn’t be able to resist the opportunity to be with her again.

She pulled his finger out of her mouth and kissed him again. They were still connected. “I love you Smith.” She said sadly, her eyes were moist.

He stared up at her. He knew in his heart what would happen next. He wanted to alter time or change something to make it not happen. A tear formed and clung to the edge of her eyelash. “Good bye” she vanished. The tear hung in the air where she had been then splashed down on his cheek. He wiped it off and put his head back on the floor and stared at the ceiling and waited.

‘Report.’

While he returned to the complex he made up a bizarre story about events that purportedly took place within the Matrix, but in his story, he resolved them and deleted them and reported that to the mainframe.

‘Reporting Agent Smith’

‘What Brown?’ he asked perturbed.

Brown looked at him quizzically. ‘What is that smell?’

‘You report to me Brown’ he snarled, ‘not the other way around, understand?’

‘Yes, Sir, Agent Smith. Humans do not procreate on command.’

‘You just have not gained control yet Brown. You have failed. You need to be repaired or replaced.’

Brown backed up. ‘I will continue observation and gain control.’

‘You bet’ Sm’ Smith snarled threateningly.
