The Newest Scene
Lila awoke, smiling softly. She rolled over, and frowned at the empty spot next to her. But the place was still warm from his body. She looked up and saw him standing in the doorway, dressed in fresh, clean clothes. The black mask was on today, and the glint of emeralds sent a delicious shiver down her spine as he nodded to her in greeting.
“Good morning, mademoiselle,” he said softly. Lila blushed at his greeting, but stuttered a good morning back. There was an awkward silence that followed. Lila was staring at
him, not sure what to make of this new situation.
Erik shifted uncomfortably under her gaze, and she finally broke the silence by asking, “What did you mean, ‘this was my new scene’?”
“Exactly that, my dear. You will be ravaged as you are ravishing, and the world will roar at your presence on stage, both in voice, and in seductive beauty.”
“You want me to be naked?!” Lila exclaimed, sitting upright, and wincing slightly at the soreness between her legs that had finally let itself be known.
“Your voice is perfection, your body only matches in its exquisite nature, Lila. And no, you will not be ‘naked.’ That is an art that Paris and the world is not yet ready for. But you are discovered… and as consequence, you are ravaged.”
“Discovered?”
“Yes, your character. You, on stage.” Lila blinked, and furrowed her brow slightly.
“I don’t understand, Erik.” Exasperated, Erik began to pace, dramatically moving his arms to describe his opera.
“How long have you been practicing your aria and rehearsing and yet you still don’t understand?” Lila blushed, and mumbled an apology.
“You are Prea! The woman who falls in love to the most generous Lord Rosen whom she serves in disguise!”
“Like Twelfth Night?” Lila asked.
Erik paused, and nodded slightly. “But unlike Shakespeare, it will be darker, ringing truer to the soul. You will be discovered in disguise, not by the lord you love, but by another, by the brother, the jealous fiend who unveils your disguise in the dark of night.”
“And then what?”
“And then you will perform your new scene before the eyes of the world, and we will see if Lord Rosen can accept Prea, if love can accept Prea even after everything else is taken away.” The room fell silent, and the echo of their quiet rang in Lila’s ears.
“Who’s cast as the parts of Lord Rosen and his brother?”
“I will play Lord Rosen. It is too difficult a piece for someone else to perform. And as for his brother…Sir Wellsley will decide in the final auditions. There are some other minor roles that have yet to be cast and then we can rehearse the opera in its entirety.”
Lila nodded, “Isn’t it bad that the entire cast is not yet chosen? The dancers and sets and everything else is prepare—“
“The only part that matters is you,” Erik said, bending low at the waist to peer into your eyes. Lila felt her face burst in heat under his stare. “Believe me when I say, the audience will know no one else but you…” He gently placed one long finger and traced the soft curve of her face before nodding and walking swiftly away, leaving Lila alone in the darkness.
