Chapter 17- A Hero Broken

*Psychewave returns, Vanisher feared dead.*

At a meeting of the Vanisher fan club was cut short in a wave of fear caused by the reappearance of the Super Villain Psychewave.
A powerful battle between the two ensued between the two enemies. Resulting in thousands of dollars of damage to the convention centre. There were no witnesses to the actual fight between Vanisher and Psychewave however the two were seen later, flying over the roof of the convention centre; Vanisher appeared unconscious and horrifically injured while Psychewave was unhurt. Psychewave shouted many things to the crowd, which this paper refuses to publish, and tossed Vanisher over the side of the building.
To add even more confusion to the situation Vanisher was caught by none other than Psychewave’s sidekick, the fugitive Super Villain Shifter. After grabbing hold of the injured Vanisher he raced off with her out of sight.
Government officials are refusing to comment at this time as to Vanishers safety and wellbeing. The worst is feared at this time.

Michael sat at Violet’s bedside, refusing to move or be moved. Violet’s parents came in shifts, Bob and then Helen, taking it in turns so the other could go home and either take care of the rest of the family or get some sleep. Dash only visited on occasion but didn’t stay long and Jack-Jack was not brought to the hospital again.

Michael sat awake for almost two days before sleep captured him. In his chair his head drooped forward and he snored quietly. In the bed, Violet finally stirred. Her fingers twitched, her head moved slightly and she moaned softly before her eyes flickered open. For a time her eyes wouldn’t focus and everything around her was just a blur of light ad shadow. Slowly but surely she managed to gather some detail from the room around her; unmistakably a hospital room, there was even a smell of disinfectant in the air. The place was dimly lit, the blinds over the windows were drawn. Violet looked down at herself, she was in a hospital gown, an IV drip was attached to one arm. She felt at her face with her free hand, her mask was still on her face. Violet had spent a lot of time in hospitals lately, why was she here this time? She thought as hard as she could, but nothing would come, everything in her head was as fuzzy and out of focus as her vision had been a moment ago.

Her hand dropped down from her face. It landed down onto her leg. Violet froze, praying that somehow she was feeling things wrong. Her hand felt her leg, felt the mass of it and even the muscles through the blankets on her bed. But her leg did not feel her hand, she did not feel the limb on her thigh. Violet brought her hand down again, slapping her leg as hard as she could, expecting to feel something, a kind of pain. But again she only felt with her hand and not her thigh. Violet’s breathing became rapid and she pulled up the blankets with a shaking hand until her bare feet were exposed. She willed her toes to move, her feet to shake, anything. But they would not respond to her wishes. Her legs would not work. What had happened to her?

It came to her suddenly. Everything came back to her, the convention centre, Psychewave, the attack. The agony, dear god she remembered the agony. She threw her head back and screamed; a deep and painful howl of a wounded animal.

***************

The Parr family raced down the corridor toward Violet’s room. Michael was sitting outside on the floor. The doctor stood outside too, looking serious. It was hard to picture that man with a smile.
“She’s awake?” Helen yelled as she ran up to the doctor. He stood in the way, stopping them from entering the room.
“She doesn’t want any visitors.” He said quietly.
Bob pushed the doctor out of the way, he didn’t want to hear any of this. He and Helen pushed their way past and into the room.

The room was dark, the shape of Violet was easy to make out but no features. Helen stretched a hand across the room to open the drapes.
“Leave it.” Violet muttered miserably. Helen pulled her arm back.
“Honey?” Bob started unsurely. “Are you alright?” He knew it was a stupid question, but it was out of his mouth before he could stop it. Violet didn’t answer, Helen stepped closer to the bed and made to hold Violet’s hand but she pulled her arm away. Violet’s hair was in frnt of her face and one sad eye could be seen staring out at the world. Her mask had been removed, torn off and dumped onto the floor.
“He beat me.” She muttered weakly. “It doesn’t matter now…it’s over…The city is his.”
“Honey.” Helen said, wishing that she could hold Violet close until everything was alright again, just like a mother should. “I know you’re hurting now. But it will be alright. You’ll get better and…” But Violet didn’t seem to be listening and interrupted her.
“He beat me…He’s a monster…worse than an animal…I was so…” She felt the sting of tears in her eyes and they rolled down her face freely. “So helpless.”
“No honey, don’t you believe that…” Bob began, taking place by Helen’s side.
“He destroyed me.” Violet muttered.
“Vi’ the doctor say’s you can get well from this with a little…”
“Couldn’t win…” She said between quiet sobs and the rolling tears. “The box of blood kept springing open in my head…The endless horror and madness…The uselessness of facing it all…” She looked her mum and dad right in the eyes and they no longer saw the daughter they once knew. A stranger stared at them.
“Leave me…leave me alone…in the dark.” She pulled the blankets over her head and they could hear her crying. Bob and Helen felt helpless. What could they say to make her feel better. Did such words even exist?

They felt helpless as they turned and left the room and stepped back into the corridor. The doctor had an ‘I told you so’ look in his eyes, but decided to keep it to himself. “It’s as we feared.” He began. “Her injuries have caused a paralysis of her legs.”
“She will get better. Right?” Bob pressed. The doctor looked at the floor and didn’t answer for a few seconds.
“It’s hard to say. The odds are in a favour for a recovery. But I cannot say what the odds are for a *full* recovery.”
“What are you saying?” Bob pressed. The doctor’s jargon was not what he needed to hear at this time.
“It is likely that Violet will walk again.” The doctor said, trying to be as clear and concise as possible. “And she may one day walk unaided, but I can give you no guarantee on that. There is a chance that she may need cane’s to aid her for the rest of her life.”

Helen looked ready to burst into tears. But the feelings were broken with an interruption. Agent Price walked into view. “What are you doing here?” Helen snapped at her. “Why aren’t you out there getting that bastard that did this to my daughter.”

Mirage stayed calm and looked at the doctor. “I’m here at Violet’s request.” Bob and Helen looked from Agent Price to the doctor, who nodded his head.
“It’s true. Before she banished everyone from the room she ordered me to contact agent Price but wouldn’t tell me the reason.”
“Can I go in and speak with her?” Mirage asked the doctor. He nodded but shrugged his shoulders at the same time.
“You can try. But she doesn’t appear to be in the mood for visitors.”

Mirage nodded and walked into the room, closing the door behind her.

**********

She emerged, looking mournful a few minutes later. Bob, Helen and Dash looked at her desperately, wanting answers immediately. “She’s requested that we take her immediately to the safe house.”

Helen immediately jumped in with her protests. “No. You can’t take her. Violet needs to be here.”
“I don’t think so.” Mirage interrupted. “Violet has just gone through terrible ordeal. She’s feeling a lot of physical and mental pain. I think…She’s afraid to be here, anywhere in this city. She needs time away to recover, in more ways than just physically.”
“But she’s not well.” Bob interrupted.
“We have full medical facilities at the safe house. Violet will receive medical care just as good as anything she could receive here. The one thing she really needs is to recover in her mind, and she can’t get that here, not inside the city; she needs to be away from here. Away from Psychewave.”
“And away from us?” Helen snapped. “What can be better for recovery than a person family.”
For that Mirage had no answer. “These are Violet’s wishes. They must be respected.” She spoke coldly. “It’s her choice. The only thing you can really do to help her is to go home and pack some things for her. We’ll be escorting her as soon as she is fit to travel.” She looked past the Parr family and to Michael, he was still hanging back, staying a little away from the Parr’s. “I’m sorry Michael. But she doesn’t want you to come with her.”
“What? NO!” He jumped up and stared at her in horror.
“These are Violet’s wishes. I’m sorry.” She did sound like she was sorry. Michael looked heartbroken. He leaned against the wall and slid down to the floor again. He felt the hot sting of tears in his eyes and didn’t fight against them. Mirage left him to his grief and turned back to the doctor.
“In your professional opinion, when do you think she’ll be fit to travel?”
The doctor thought about it for a minute. “I think she’s fit enough to make the journey right now. She’s conscious and stable.”
It wasn’t quiet the answer that Mirage was looking for, personally she was hoping that Violet might have to wait a day or two, give her the chance to change her mind. But since she could leave right away she had to take the earliest time. “Very well.” She said, trying to sound as professional as she made herself look. “Helen, Bob. If you would be so kind as to pack a bag of Violet’s things. We’ll be departing within the hour.”

To be continued.
