Chapter 16 – Realisations

Oria stepped backwards sharply with a choked sigh as the gun fell from her numb fingertips. She glanced back at a shout from the shore line and spotted Will. He looked appalled and ran forwards pushing past her as she turned away and stood on the edge of the water looking out. The chest was there, just to her right, the cause of and solution to all her problems.

A hand landed heavily on her shoulder and forced her to turn around, she closed her eyes not wanting to meet the eyes of the other. A tear escaped before she could stop it and she brushed it away angrily before trying to step away but the hand wouldn’t let her. It gripped tighter and dragged her close to a warm body crushing her against it in strong arms… and she broke.

Too many years of being strong, too many years of hope after hope and nothing more than failure. Too many years of prayer to a god that no longer cared, too many years watching everyone else live… too many years alone and wanting to die. Too few years wanting to live and be with another, too few years free.

Tears fell freely as she gripped the back of Jack’s shirt tightly and clung as her legs gave way, he sank to the sand with her and cradled her on his lap whispering soft words of comfort and nonsense. After several minutes she got back her control but didn’t care to move away from him instead holding him tighter as he trailed soothing fingers up and down her back, “You only put one bullet in the gun?” She nodded faintly.

“It was never meant for you, it was meant for Maccus. I just needed to know… needed to know if I could still do it.” Jack smiled faintly, he had to admit when he’d felt that gun go off over his heart he’d thought his days were up. To find that she hadn’t loaded the gun with more than one bullet had been yet another shock in the day’s numerous shocking events.

“Could do what?” She still avoided his gaze.

“Kill mercilessly.” Jack nodded slightly.

“And can you? Could you kill me if push came to shove.” She laughed slightly, mocking herself.

“I think we both know the answer to that now. I couldn’t harm you if my life depended on it.”

“What if you hadn’t killed him in one?” She smiled faintly.

“I knew I would and besides, I didn’t trust myself to load it with more than one. Just in case.” Jack nodded faintly and glanced back at Will, noting the key dangling from his throat and the suspicious look in his eyes.

“What do you need the chest for?” Jack whispered so only she could hear.

“If I return the heart he will release Sara and give you another three days to gather the souls you need to release yourself. I figured it was better than going after it for myself.” Jack scowled at the comment about Sara.

“If he brought her back he would still have her soul. She would be resigned to the same life as you… you really want her to have that?” Oria paused and contemplated this as she sat up.

“I knew there was a catch! I just couldn’t see it.” She glanced at the chest, all those years of waiting and now she was about to resign herself to another set of years of waiting and planning. “You have the chest, have the heart and get out of this now.” She scrambled upright brushing the tear tracks away as she did so. Jack scrambled up as well as she turned and headed into the ocean.

“Oria…” She glanced backwards, “Take the chest with you, I’ll just keep the heart. Will got the key, if you go back empty-handed he’ll most likely crucify you.” Slowly she nodded and headed back up the beach to where Will was unlocking the chest. Jack stood between them waiting for her to catch up with him. She paused as she stood inches from him, “I knew you couldn’t kill me.” He whispered with a small smile and followed her back to the chest.

All three watched curiously as Will turned the key and the chest cracked open with a gust of dust, slowly he lifted the lid away and gazed inside, the two pirates gazing over his shoulder. Jack’s lips quirked slightly as they spotted the slowly beating heart of Davy Jones, “It does exist.”

Slowly Jack lifted it free of the chest and placed it in a small satchel before locking the chest back up and handing it to Oria with the key. She watched him curiously as he draped the key’s chain over her head and placed it soundly against her chest. His fingers pausing for a few seconds on her throat, “Be careful.” He whispered as she turned away carrying the cumbersome chest under her arm.

“Don’t do anything stupid. Just get yourself out.” She shouted back with a pointed glare at him and almost commented on the smirk on his lips. He knew full well that he wasn’t going to adhere to those rules. He had one last gamble to make, one potentially last gamble.
