Chapter 16 - Naughty Girl

“Lord Beckett, there is a ship on the horizon. It’s not moving but it is within the co-ordinates that Davy Jones gave us.” A sailor announced as he stood smartly before the imposing desk and less imposing physique of the Lord. Cutler Beckett glanced up with a faint smile.

“Then take us in.” He ordered, the sailor nodded and left the room to spread the command. Beckett twirled a figurine of a ship between his fingers and raked his eyes over the large ornately decorated map spread before him. Fleets and soldiers stood all over it, proclaiming their positions proudly to the world on which they stood. Beckett laid the model ship down onto the only remaining section of ocean that was empty. The small metal flag was flapping confidently in a non-existent wind and proclaiming the figurine as the Endeavour.

Oria stepped down into the hold; Jack was preoccupied with enforcing his Captaincy as he strutted about the deck ordering the crew to get the ship into order. She paused as a shadow shifted in candle light, the far end of the hold glowing slightly as someone hunched over a piece of parchment. A feather quill was scratching away noisily in the otherwise silent space, occasionally the metal tip clinked against an ink pot neck as it was re-filled.

“What are you doing?” Will jumped at the sound of Oria’s unexpected voice, several splatters of ink sprawling across the parchment. He scowled at the mess and feverishly dabbed at it with a small cloth.

“It doesn’t matter.” Will curtly responded annoyed at being discovered.

“Oh but it does. It is obviously very important or you wouldn’t be doing this in a dark dank corner away from all life.” Oria whispered and glanced over his shoulder. The parchment was adorned with swirling lines and arrows, small sentences explaining various things scrawled along dotted lines. “You’re going to try and go back?”

Will glared at her and folded the cloth carefully back up to avoid any more ink from spreading and blotting. “Yes I am going to go back. My father was sent down there because of you. I swore to rescue him and I will.” Oria laughed cruelly and took the parchment from him before he could put it away in his inner pocket. Will stood quickly, furious at the impudence of the girl, how dare she interfere in his affairs?

“You’re a fool.” She tore the parchment in half and repeated till it fluttered to the floor in a thousand small pieces. Will stared dumbly at the destruction and glared at her accusingly. “You think you can just walk in there unbidden? You think you could find him?”

“Jack found you. Why couldn’t I…” Will began only to be interrupted by Oria.

“Because I knew Jack was coming and I looked for him. I know what that place is like; I know what it can do to people. You would not find Bootstrap if you returned. You would be lost.” Oria tried to explain but she could see the anger in the young man’s eyes, he wouldn’t listen to reason.

“I could have tried.” Will continued, his fists clenched in frustration.

“And you would have failed,” Oria soothed. “Will, you see things down there. Things that haunt you for the rest of your life. Especially when you have no hope, when you believe that you are down there for good. How many people do you know that would stay sane in a land where nightmares come true, where they believe that there is no escape? Personally, I don’t know a single one. The only reason Barbossa stayed ‘sane’ was because he believed my punishment of him was unjust.”

Heavy footsteps echoed behind them and Jack stepped into the glow suspiciously glancing between the two. “We’re heading for Tortuga.” He announced after a few seconds of warily watching the pair. Grasping Oria’s arm Jack led her back up to the deck and away from Will. Quickly grazing his eyes over her to assure himself that nothing had happened between them in the dark solitude. Her clothing looked intact and they hadn’t been close or breathing heavily enough to have been doing anything he reasoned.

Oria glanced about the mildly improved ship as they stepped into the blinding light of the Caribbean sun. The sails were no longer dripping on the crew and the ropes looked more organised. She was completely oblivious to Jack’s worried assessment.

“I’m just going to get me compass.” Jack announced and hurried off to the cabin relieved that she had noticed his study of her. Oria headed up to the helm and stood next to Barbossa. He glanced her over with a grin.

“Don’t do that. It’s disturbing.” Oria commanded with a grimace as she remembered what Jack had suggested. Her gaze remained on the deck and busy crew, the pirate merely chuckled.

“Wouldn’t dream of it Miss Oria. No worries there, I’m not interested in sticks.” Barbossa announced with a leer at her skinny frame. “It’s just been such a long time since I’ve…”

“Ok. I’m going to go now.” Oria quickly interjected and jogged back down to the deck. Barbossa chuckled cruelly but was glad to be alone once more; he had things to think about. Most particularly and interestingly, the young pirate lass’s involvement in his rescue.

:/

Elizabeth watched from a distance as Jack stepped into the cabin alone, Oria was out of the way having what appeared to be a war of words with Barbossa. Elizabeth took her chance slipping into the cabin after Jack. The pirate was rustling around in a drawer too preoccupied with whatever he was doing to notice her entrance. He cursed and put a bleeding finger to his lips, absently tossing the offending dagger over his shoulder. It clattered to the floor several feet away.

“Where the bloody hell is it?” He whispered to himself, flicking a sheaf of parchments over his other shoulder. He slammed the drawer closed, straightened slightly and was about to open another when he spotted Elizabeth. Jack jumped in surprise at the girl’s apparently sudden appearance. “Elizabeth?” He queried unsure if he was hallucinating, after all he hadn’t had any rum for about three days after practically living off the stuff. Things never were quite what they appeared without rum, course it was the same effect if one had too much rum. His reasoning quickly stopped.

Elizabeth strode towards him, reining in her fear of what she was about to do. Words wouldn’t do it this time, not that she actually believed that she would be able to formulate any to a form of coherence. Her throat had all but closed up with nerves. “I just need to know.” She whispered, feeling that some explanation should be given. Jack was watching her suspiciously but he didn’t move away as she stepped up to him. There was no teasing in him, nothing but a wary silence and those beautiful eyes watching her so steadily, drawing her in.

Elizabeth stepped closer and swallowed nervously. Jack leaned back slightly now more than a bit wary, fun and games and teasing had all been fine. After all there was no harm in that, amusement and possibly hurt feelings but nothing more. Elizabeth frowned slightly beginning to doubt herself and more than a little disappointed that Jack hadn’t taken the initiative. Deciding to bite the bullet she pressed her lips to his gently. She was mortally afraid that he was going to step away or push her away. Instead he just stood there, completely neutral, not doing anything just letting her have her way.

:/

Oria frowned as Elizabeth slipped into the cabin; the worried glance over her shoulder had not been a comfort. If anything it had made Oria highly suspicious. Silently she watched the door close behind the young woman and waited for a couple of seconds before striding over. She adopted a softer pace as she approached the door so as not to arouse suspicion, avoiding the creakier of the planks.

:/

Elizabeth stepped back, Jack still with the same expression on his face remained where he was. “Well? Do you know now?” He enquired politely as if they had been discussing the weather over tea and cakes.

“I think she might have a fever Jack.” They both jumped at the whisper of Oria’s voice. She stood in the doorway with her arms folded and an unreadable expression.

“Oria.” Oria ignored Jack almost choking on her name. Her eyes were locked onto Elizabeth who was now blushing a deep crimson and avoiding anyone’s gaze.

“You really do look awfully warm. Here, let me help you cool down.” Oria stalked forwards and grasped Elizabeth’s arm, she dragged her from the room. Jack following rapidly, worried as to what exactly Oria was going to do. The crew paused as the trio emerged, Oria leading a furiously blushing Governor’s daughter after her. She paused at the edge of the ship and grasped both of Elizabeth’s upper arms. “This should cool you down.” Oria assured and pushed sharply, the young woman shrieked as she tumbled over the side of the ship.

Will shouted in panic and Jack stepped up to Oria waving his hands. “It’s not what you think. Honestly, it’s really nothing like it looked like it did. It was just…” Oria turned to face him.

“You know Jack you look as if you’re burning up as well.” She pushed his shoulder and Jack tumbled over the side also with a heavy splash. Oria leaned against the banister and watched as the pair spluttered in the waves below. “Feeling any cooler?”

“Oria, it was just a… a thing that happened and now it’s over and it shall never occur again. It was nothing honestly, just a misunderstanding.” Jack shouted up, pushing his hat out of the way as it slid lower and lower on his brow.

“Funny it looked like something to me and it looked rather accurate for a misunderstanding.” Oria whispered her eyes showing her disproval and her tone colder than ice. Jack swam to the side of the ship and began to clamber back up to the deck. Oria trailed her fingers along the banister as she made her way leisurely towards the opening in the railings. She stepped back giving Jack enough room to clamber up and folded her arms awaiting some form of explanation to erupt.

Jack pulled himself up and stood straight instantly opening his hands to show he wasn’t lying. “Honestly… Agh!” He shouted as he once again tumbled backwards into the water. Oria stood at the top of the rungs and glared down at him.

“Give me one good reason why I should let you back onto this ship.” She snarled.

“For the love of God. Oria, you do that one more time and I’ll…” Jack spluttered, splashing his way back over to the rungs. Oria laughed with wicked amusement.

“You’ll what? Flick some water at me? Oh no! Don’t flick the water at me! Whatever shall I do?” She mocked, clasping her hands together as if she was a helpless maid facing some forbidden and deadly evil.

“Oria, it happened. It just happened, one minute she was stood opposite me and the next she was…” Jack was sharply cut out as Oria straightened up and interrupted him swiftly.

“Oh sure she just fell onto your lips,” Oria quipped cruelly. “Just like Anna-Maria fell onto your hips, more than once in her case. Really Jack, these girls are just so clumsy.”
