Chapter 17 - Final Stands
Oria reappeared on the deck of the Flying Dutchman recomposed and arrogant, a cocky smirk fixed in her eyes and on her lips as Jones glanced her over. His eyes rested on the chest under her arm and he smiled cruelly, “That’s the kind of discipline I expect from you from now on. Do you understand me?”
“Aye Captain.” Oria handed over the chest and key watching with mild disgust as the small slimy tentacle crept out to once again grip the key and bury it underneath the pile of tentacles. She glanced backwards on instinct back towards the beach. She’d condemned herself to god knows how many more years on this cursed crew and she was glad… Jack was safe, that was all that mattered now she told herself.
“Get us on an intercept course with the Black Pearl. It’s time Mr Sparrow learned of his future.” Oria’s gaze snapped back to him, she nodded and set about shouting at the crew to get the ship moving towards the Pearl. Within minutes the two ships were floating alongside each other, the crews glaring at each other though neither dared to draw cannons. Oria glanced across at Jack as he stepped onto the deck and walked up to the railings. It was time to say good-bye for the last time. She nodded curtly and turned away heading slowly for Davy Jones cabin.
“You Mr Sparrow still owe me ninety-nine souls or your own. May I enquire as to where they are?” Jones hissed with relish but was surprised at Jack’s lack of response. Instead the pirate was looking at him condescendingly and it unnerved him, what did this condemned man have to be condescending about. Hadn’t he realised that his time was over?
“No you may not enquire as to where the souls are and that is because I’ve got something far more precious than ninety-nine souls for you mate.” Jack smirked and drew out the small satchel containing Jones heart. Silence fell over both ships and Oria paused just to watch Jones reaction one hand resting on the mast as she watched the scene unfold.
The furious coiling and uncoiling of the tentacles, the clacking of his claw hand and the writhing of that one extended tentacle finger as he contemplated his next move. “One life for another is the rule, I assume you know that already… seeing as you have the heart. I assume you want your debt cancelled in return for the safe return of my heart?” Jones hissed barely able to restrain his anger.
Jack nodded with a grin, “No.” Once again a deathly silence echoed over the pair of ships but no one got chance to query this as Jack continued with a deadly serious face, “I want you to release Oria and return her mortality.” A deeper silence echoed over the ships as all eyes turned to her and Oria froze staring at Jack whose gaze met hers confidently. He had made the right choice, he had done what he had to do and if Tia Dalma’s plan didn’t work then he would at least rest in peace knowing that for once in his life he had definitely done the right thing. This was one gamble he was prepared to risk the consequences of.
Jones was bristling ten times more furiously than before and he glared between Jack and Oria with the obvious desire to maim, kill and completely obliterate them both from existence. Oria shook her head at Jack, “Who told you of this?” Oria paused and glanced up at Jones comment, “Who told you that the selfless act of asking for another’s soul whether or not at the price of your own would exempt you? WHO WAS IT?” He turned on Oria in a black mood, “Was it you?” She shook her head dumbly, she didn’t even know the clause existed. The sacrifice of one’s own soul in order to spare another’s, he’d done it… Jack had done it. He had got them both free without any blood being spilled, just by using his annoyingly successful diplomatic tactics.
She met his eyes still disbelieving that this was really happening, did this mean she was free? Had Jack done what she hadn’t even come close to? Hell he’d done what she’d set out to do and more, he’d done the whole lot, setting both of them free. She hadn’t dared to dream it was possible and now here it was… the impossible actual reality unfolding right now in front of her very eyes.
A cold hand tore her sleeve up angrily and Jones tentacle finger wrapped about the tattoo of his insignia. Slowly it faded away under his touch and she gave a shuddering sigh as he stepped away and stared down at the completely flawless skin in awe, “You are free to leave.” Jones whispered the anger barely restrained in his tone as he glared between the pair.
Oria moved swiftly towards the plank Gibbs and a few other crew members had balanced across the gap between the two ships. She scrambled over quickly and leapt down the other side, as soon as she was across the plank was quickly retreated. Jack glanced at her briefly, “You will not haunt us again and we are both free?” Jones nodded with a snarl.
“You are both freed from your debts. Now pass the heart over.” Jack tossed it over the gap between the two ships and into the hands of a crew man and watched as Jones checked it over. The Captain glared across at them both before the Flying Dutchman pulled away and sank into the ocean.
Jack heaved a sigh of relief and gave a faint laugh, he had played death at its own game and come out on top. A cheer went out over the ship, the crew laughing and joking about what would have happened if the gamble hadn’t paid off, “You actually did it.” Oria whispered as she stepped up to him her eyes fixed on where Jones had disappeared, “I can’t believe you actually did it.”
His face broke into a broad grin and he wrapped an arm about her waist arrogantly and dragged her towards the prow of the ship for a little more privacy than was available on the deck. “Oh ye of little faith, you forgot one very important thing love… I’m Captain Jack Sparrow.”
