Chapter 17 – Proposal
“Ship, there’s a ship heading towards us.” The pirate in the crow’s nest screeched loudly all but dropping his spy glass with the panic. The argument below momentarily paused as everyone’s attention turned to the looming ship which was approaching rapidly.
Oria stared at the ship dumbly as it made its way towards them carving the ocean apart as it approached. Turning sharply, she snatched a spy glass from Will’s belt and gazed down the cylinder towards it. Slowly, she lowered it disbelievingly and passed it back to Will who looked more startled that she had gotten hold of it in the first place. “Get this ship moving now.” She shouted over the deck as she knelt and held a hand out for Jack as he clambered up the rungs once more. Pushing him up and behind her she offered her hand to Elizabeth and dragged the girl up also. Scrambling back to her feet Oria glanced about the deck.
“We don’t have any cannons.” Jack whispered, following her gaze before they locked together. Oria laughed slightly in bemusement and ran shaky fingers through her hair.
:/
“My Lord, we’re closing in on it,” Cutler Beckett glanced up as a cruel smile spread on the sailors face. “It’s the Black Pearl, and she’s unarmed.” Beckett beamed and rose from his desk to follow the young man onto the deck. The chill of a spy glass case pressed into his palm and Beckett gazed out over the glittering ocean at the floundering ship.
“Perfect. Take us in.”
:/
“Jack, we need to do something.” Oria shouted fearfully as the Endeavour closed in maliciously. She had no weapons on or near her. The ship was completely unarmed and only just classing as afloat. Jack stepped up to her and clasped her arms to keep her still. She was all but bouncing from mast to rail.
“Like what? The sails are still too heavy with sea water for the wind to lift. The cannons are either above or below us. Either way they’re in a place that is unhelpful. Personally I’m running low on ideas with the current resources available.” Jack proclaimed with increasing frustration. Oria watched him silently. “We’re stuck here. All we can do is wait.” He announced resignedly and began to pray for a minor miracle to occur. The pirate was sure that he was due one any time soon with the current streak of bad luck.
“That’s not good enough.” Oria whispered and brushed him away, striding around the mast she began tugging at a rope to loosen it. Jack’s hands grasped both of hers tightly and gripped hard enough to stop her from pulling away much to her annoyance. “Let me go.”
“What’s going on?” He questioned, demanding an answer as she once again attempted to step away. “I know there’s something and I know that you know what it is. Judging by your behaviour I’m going for a tentacled involvement.” Oria glared at him confirming Jack’s suspicions. She rolled her eyes and gave a frustrated sigh before speaking again.
“Davy Jones has lost his heart and is currently in the command of who ever is commanding that vessel. Personally, I want to get as far away from it as possible.” Oria announced watching Jack’s reaction and feeling the nerves rise swiftly.
“Then we’ll find a way to deal with it. We always do.” Jack soothed, releasing her hands and trailing his hands along her arms, rumpling the shirt as it caught and slipped between his fingers. Slowly Oria nodded and stepped away back into the frenzy of getting the ship ready to move. Jack watching her go silently, he’d screwed up again and he knew it.
The Pearl began to move as the Endeavour crept closer to them till the two crews could clearly see the other. Cannon fire echoed out and the Black Pearl rocked as the shot sent shock waves against her prow. “All stop. Stop this ship before we lose it completely.” Jack hollered over the roar of a second cannon. The Pearl was beginning to list slightly to port. Oria stepped up alongside him her eyes on the approaching threat.
“I guess this is the part where we start praying.” She murmured, Jack glanced at her and nodded. He wanted to hold her to him, wanted to reassure her that he wouldn’t let anything happen. They would be empty promises and no use, even if she would have believed him. The crew fell into an eerie and uncomfortable silence as they awaited the arrival of the HMS ship.
:/
Red coats and marines swarmed around them, pouring from their ship and onto the Pearl. The pirates did nothing to defend themselves against the invasion. They knew they were outnumbered and any resistance would only end with unnecessary deaths. Jack stood at the helm, one hand resting on the wheel gingerly as he watched the scene below unfold. His air of confidence momentarily lost as Beckett himself stepped onto the Pearl with a similar aura of self-assurance about him.
“Who is the Captain of this vessel?” Beckett queried Barbossa who for once in his life had no desire what so ever to claim the Black Pearl as his own.
“That would be me.” Jack shouted down bolstering his courage tightly and glaring furiously at Beckett. The man smiled what would have been a pleasant smile had the circumstances been different and motioned smoothly for Jack to come down to the deck. The pirate glanced at Oria and she followed him down to stand in front of the man.
“Ah yes, Jack Teague,” His gaze travelled past him to Oria and a knowing smirk grew boldly over those arrogant lips. “And this must be the elusive Oria… Oria De Monara I believe. You are quite a legend my dear.” Jack stepped between them with a scowl. A distinct dislike enhancing the detestation he already nursed of the man. No one looked at her like that except Jack and anyone who had the nerve to in his presence always got an icy reception and swift departure.
“She’s no concern of yours. I am the Captain of this ship so what do you want?” Jack demanded with an air of false confidence ignoring the fact that the Endeavour could easily destroy the Pearl at that precise moment in time. Beckett chuckled slightly at the pirate’s air of apparent nonchalance and the clear glint of annoyance at Beckett’s attention to Oria.
“I’m here to have a little discussion with your friend.” Beckett purred as Jack scowled more deeply.
“Barbossa? Go right ahead; he’s around here some where. You should be able to smell him, not well known for personal hygiene.” Jack announced with a grin, mildly soothed by being able to snipe at Barbossa without him being able to retaliate. The satisfaction dimmed when he spotted Barbossa rolling his eyes. Jack swiftly decided he would give the pirate a good heart felt glare later for that little act. At least he would if there was a later.
“Actually I’m here to propose to Miss De Monara.” Beckett informed him with a wicked smile. Jack pointed a finger at him threateningly; not quite daring to reach for his cutlass with the amount of red coats around them.
“There’ll be no proposing on this ship except possibly by Mr. Turner and that will be to Miss Swann and Miss Swann only. I’m not sure what the law is as to eunuchs being allowed to marry so even that may not occur.” Jack frowned momentarily distracted as he pondered the issue.
“I don’t want to marry her you idiot.” Beckett informed him icily before turning his gaze to the now extremely curious Oria. “I’ve heard that a De Monara is easily persuaded by the highest bidder and will effectively do… anything for the right price. I’m here to bid for her allegiance and I think she’ll find it more than a little tempting.” Beckett watched as Oria began to step around Jack. Instantly Jack held out an arm to keep her where she was.
“What could you possibly offer her?” He trailed his eyes over Beckett mockingly assessing the man’s physique. Beckett was not looking at him though. His eyes were locked onto Oria’s as she brushed Jack aside much to his annoyance.
“What is your bid?” She whispered over the deadly silence and the man beamed.
“The Black Pearl, her crew, passengers and Captain sail away now, perfectly free and safe. Or rather, as safe as is possible on this wrecked death trap.” He cast a discerning eye over the wreckage of the ship. “In return you accompany me back to Port Royal without any trouble.” Beckett persuaded watching her reaction carefully.
“And if I refuse?” She questioned. Instantly every musket and flintlock was primed and aimed at everyone in the pirate crew and most importantly at Jack.
“Then everyone dies and you still come with me.” Beckett responded with a friendly smile. “What is your decision?”
