Chapter 18 – No Smoke Without Fire
Nearly an hour later and Oria had finally decided that enough was enough, the noisy inn was not assisting the pounding headache and Jack was already beyond drunk reciting some old childhood tale to a more than willing audience. Standing swiftly she headed out of the inn Will hot on her heels equally glad to have an excuse to leave the smoky place. He caught up with her as she headed for the Pearl, “You started that fight didn’t you.” He stated accusingly.
Oria sighed at the statement, she was in no mood to humour the lad, “Yes.” She quickened her pace hoping to lose him.
“That was stupid considering you’re not exactly at your best.” Oria paused and glared back at him.
“Go home Will, you’ve done your job. I’m back safe and sound, Jack isn’t going to hunt you down. Go back to your bonny lass and wed and bed her or what ever… Just leave me be.” Will kept pace with her but stayed silent, he wanted to make sure she got back to the Pearl all right at least. Without warning she pinned him to a wall, a dagger to his throat and a snarl fixed on her lips, “I told you to leave me Will, I am not a person you want to know at this precise moment in time. Sorry to tell you this but you wouldn’t be much of a match against me should I get the incentive on me to do you harm.” She pushed him away harshly and he stumbled back against the wall.
Will watched as she stalked away, “Everyone needs someone to watch their back.” Oria didn’t even pause as she continued on her path to the ships, “Did that kiss mean anything?” She paused and turned to face him, slowly she stalked back to stand directly in front of him.
“Sorry lad, you’re sweet and everything but… I’m just in this for the hell of it. That means it meant nothing and its only purpose was to get you so befuddled you would have no choice but to follow me and provide some protection till I was back in action.” Will stared at her dumbly for a few seconds before she got bored with his silence and began to head for the Pearl once more.
“What about Jack?” He heard her laugh and glance back over her shoulder without her stride faltering.
“He’s a big boy; he can take care of himself.” Will frowned not entirely sure what she was hinting at but shrugged and headed for an inn to spend the night in before hunting down a morning transport back to Port Royal.
:/
Oria stirred as the sun bathed over her soothingly warm through the chill of the glass, she rolled over in the hammock and glanced across at the bed. It was empty, Jack hadn’t returned last night either that or he had returned seen her in the hammock and taken insult. She sat up and swung her legs out swiftly hearing someone moving on deck. She stalked out of the cabin and glared at whoever was intruding. Anna-Maria was sat on the opposite steps her head in her hands and looking sorry for herself, “Are you alright?” Oria called across the deck curious as to why the woman looked so woeful.
Anna-Maria glanced up startled only to meet ice cold eyes, warmed only slightly by a friendly smile on beautiful lips, a smile that was entirely false without looking it, “I just don’t feel very well, that’s all.” Oria sat next to her looking concerned as she placed an arm around her shoulders with obscene gentleness.
“How do you feel?” Anna-Maria looked at her innocently.
“So sick, so appallingly sick.” Oria forced down the smirk, her little sachet of herbs had worked then in inducing the sickness, she would have to reward the doctor in due course. She nodded sympathetically and rubbed the other woman’s shoulders.
“Forgive me for asking but… have you been laying with anyone?” Anna-Maria swiftly avoided her gaze and focused on her knees.
“Not recently.” Oria nodded and rubbed soothingly looking as best as she possibly could sympathetic. She had been betting that the woman would know little about the symptoms and wouldn’t have guessed that the sickness wouldn’t have come on quite as sudden as Oria had made it appear to.
“Well let’s get you to the doctor’s, he’ll know what to do. I’ll go in first and explain the situation for you.” Anna-Maria stared at her disbelievingly; she had not thought it in Oria to be so gentle or considerate. She allowed the slightly taller woman to lift her onto her feet and guide her towards the doctors.
:/
Oria waited patiently for Anna-Maria to emerge from the room, she had gone in first as promised but she hadn’t been explaining the situation. When Anna-Maria finally re-appeared Oria’s face softened instantly from its thoughtfulness and she smiled kindly as she stood up. The other woman was half-smiling and fighting down the urge to throw up with nerves as she walked up to Oria, “I’m pregnant.” She whispered and Oria beamed as if proud of the fact.
“That’s wonderful news!” She exclaimed pasting a pleased smile on her face and hugging the tanned woman with fake fondness, if she was anything she was an actress and would not let facades drop so easily. Slowly she extricated herself from the woman’s clinging grasp and led her back to the Pearl fighting down whatever was bubbling up inside her with an iron will.
Jack was stood on deck wringing his hands and looking petrified, he paled slightly seeing Oria and Anna-Maria together. He forced a smile on his face and faked being relieved, “Oria, I didn’t know where you’d gone. Thought you’d been stolen or… something.” He glanced at Anna-Maria warily as Oria pushed her forwards the smile faltering only slightly as she spotted Jack.
“There is no point delaying you’d best say it now while the rest of the crew can not hear.” Anna-Maria stared between Jack and Oria warily before continuing.
“Captain… I’m pregnant.” Jack froze for a few seconds before laughing and focusing on Anna-Maria with a questioning gaze. She nodded in affirmation and Jack bit his lip as he glanced at Oria. He caught the fire in that glare and feared what it would entail, she turned away giving them a few seconds privacy and headed into the cabin.
:/
Nearly ten minutes later Jack entered closing the door slowly behind him as he watched Oria lock the small balcony doors on the back and turn to face him, “What is to happen with her?” The voice sent shivers of fear down his spine, there was no emotion at all in it. Slowly he stepped into the room bracing himself for anything she could throw at him.
“She dismissed herself. I gave her enough money as was fitting her position on this ship. She has family, she’s going to live with them.” He whispered watching Oria suspiciously, “How did you know?”
“I saw you two at it last night or the night before, I can’t remember which. Anyway there’s no need to worry about another of your children being in danger, she’s not pregnant.” Jack stared at her dumbly.
“Then why did the doctor say she was?” Oria smiled faintly.
“I have my ways of persuading people into saying anything I want them to say Jack, you should know that by now. I merely… persuaded… him to tell her she was pregnant. See Jack if she’s pregnant or believes she’s pregnant she’s going to run as far as she can from me with fear. Probably the safest place for her to be, I’m not into pointless killing and there’s nothing better than seeing someone petrified beyond belief.” She smiled evilly imaging how Anna-Maria would be permanently looking over her shoulder till she realised she had been tricked. Jack was scowling at her and she frowned.
“Why did you do that? She’s one of the best sailors we’ve had.” Oria laughed slightly.
“Aye but not both of us have had her, have we love? It’s only been you Jack so I’ll have to take your word for her being the best.” He scowled and was about to interrupt but she ploughed ahead, “If you thought that I would just pass it off like water under the bridge, you should have known better. How long has it been going on for Jack? Under my nose?” Jack swallowed nervously deciding going for the prodigal son approach was probably the best approach at the moment.
“It wasn’t exactly regular. Whenever you weren’t around, when you got hurt… after Sara was… it was a comfort sort of thing.” He spluttered as Oria nodded slowly and sat on the desk her gaze not softening, “Oria it didn’t mean anything, it was… mutual gratification?” Oria shook her head slowly.
“Oh but it did mean something Jack.” Jack stepped up to her clasping her face in his hands and forcing her to look at him.
“It didn’t mean anything, it’s just so hard… it’s hard being with you… sometimes.” Oria’s gaze hardened even more and she brushed his hands away furiously.
“How is it hard being with me, please elaborate.” Jack sighed and turned away. How could he phrase this exactly, he knew what he wanted to say just not how to put it into words. Slowly he gathered his thoughts and started to speak.
“You’re just… just… too much sometimes. I mean it’s all right now, I’m still in my prime, I can keep pace… But what happens when I get older Oria, when I can’t keep it anymore. What if we have kids, how do we tell them that they’re mother can’t die, she can’t even age.” Jack turned to look at her begging her to understand, “If Sara was still alive then she’d end up looking like your mother, then your grandmother. According to the carpenter I already look like your father for Christ’s sake.” He felt his voice and anger rise simultaneously as Oria glared at him and jumped off the desk.
“You think you are the only one affected by this Jack Sparrow? You think you are the only one who is going to suffer?” Oria spat back at him. He glared back at her with as much anger, why couldn’t she understand, he loved her… more than life itself but it was hard having that knowledge that she would continue on for long after him with other men and possibly children.
“How the hell is it going to affect you? What do you have to worry about?”
