Chapter 2

Jack Sparrow was in what could rightly be called a miserable temper. He was sitting in the Pearl’s rigging with his back against the mainmast, with one leg hooked around a spar and the other hooked in the ratlines. It was almost peaceful up there, and peace had been sadly lacking for the last several hours. At least Anamaria had finally cursed herself hoarse and Jack’s headache had therefore diminished a little. However, that didn’t mean his problems had gone away, and the most immediate problem was the lack of rum on board. Fix that problem and the headache would go away, and he might even be able to come up with a solution to this whole marriage thing.

“Bit of a tactical error there, Jack lad. Should’ve settled it before we got here.” A loud thud on the deck brought his attention back from thinking of six or seven things he could have done, and hadn’t, in the interests of keeping large amounts of blood off the deck. “What the bloody hell?” On his way down the rigging, he caught snatches of Gibbs and somebody who sounded like Anna, but couldn’t possibly be. She never came down to the Pearl…

“Christ, that thing’s heavy! What do ye cut the stuff with, liquid lead?”

“Well, water does weigh a fair bit, y’know.”

“Of course I know! I’ve been haulin’ the damn thing down from the heights, haven’t I?”

At that point, Jack gave up climbing, seized a halyard and slid down to the deck like an eel, landing opposite Gibbs, Anna, and a large cask.

“Anna, luv, tell me there’s rum in that!”

“There is.” She sized him up with a swift glance, decided he was just this side of desperate, and handed him a flask. “And in this, too. Get down this first.” That took Jack approximately forty-five seconds, and his headache started to melt down the back of his neck and disappear.

“Aaahhhh, better. Now what are you doing here?”

“Ask him.” She pointed at Gibbs. “He seems to think I can come up with a solution to this whole marriage problem. What’s your ex-cooper’s name, anyway?”

“Josiah. Or so he says, anyway.”

“Right. Where have you stashed Anamaria? I want to talk to her first.”

“She’s down in the brig. Only place she can’t climb out of.” Anna sighed and went below to start making peace.
