Chapter 2

You’ve gone quiet, Commodore.” Governor Swann observed, sending a
concerned pensive glance at the silent naval officer beside him. The man seemed
to have drawn into himself, posture radiating disquietude. He couldn’t help but
feel sorry for the man. He knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the man standing
beside him had loved his daughter in such a way that, if Elizabeth had chosen
him, he would have kept her happy and contented for the rest of her days. Yet,
at the same time, he could not help but feel relief that his daughter had chosen
whom she had.

He loved his daughter as much as any father could, and only longed for her
own happiness as well as the happiness for this man, whom over the years had
become like a surrogate son to him. If this man was not the man to give his
daughter the happiness that she deserved and in turn give the Commodore the love
and happiness he deserved then yes, he was most adamantly pleased she had chose
whom she did.

And even more so, William Turner was a good man. Stable enough to provide for
his daughter yet with just enough wildness to keep Elizabeth vastly contented.
They were a good match, even if it did hurt him to see a man so like a son he
never had be in pain because of it.

Weatherby Swann watched as Commodore Norrington blinked, eyes focusing as if
he had been a thousand miles away, and maybe he had, as he inclined his head
towards him. “I am sorry, Governor Swann. I was just--” The man gave a
disparaging smile “--thinking upon how quiet it has been in these last few
weeks.”

Governor Swann nodded, eyes sweeping past all of the guests to light upon his
daughter who was laughing merrily at something her husband-towas was saying.
“Yes, it has been a bit too silent, hasn’t it?”

The Commodore nodded, pointedly avoiding the area where Elizabeth and Will
were laughing and talking. Once again, a sudden rush of sadness for the man
filled him. If only the man could find such happiness.

“Yes, I was thinking about gathering a small crew and sailing the Dauntless
in the coming weeks. Perhaps there is something going on that is keeping it so
quiet.” Commodore replied, inclining his head to a giggling mother and daughter
whom were batting their eyelashes at him coyly while passing by.

“An admirable idea, Commodore.” He replied warmly, watching as the man cast a
wistful glance out the window to the sea beyond. “I think that is just what you
need. Out on the open ocean, fighting whatever un-dead pirates that may be
buried within our waters.” He jested gently, hopefully.

It had been a time since they had been out of sea with
those---cursed---pirates and he was now well past the shock that he had been in
just after. Now, he could remember the event with something akin to cockeyed
amusement. Well, as long as he didn’t think about it for too long anyway.

The man beside him stiffened slightly before relaxing and sending his
patented small smile. “Yes, yes I think that is exactly what I need, Governor
Swann.”

His smile grew as he clapped the officer on the back again. “Then go to it,
my boy. Whatever you need is, as always, at your disposal.”

Commodore Norrington smiled again and inclined his head in thanks.

Weatherby couldn’t help but feel a fond sad smile grace his lips. Despite the
complexity of the situation before them, some things really were very simple
when you came down to it. The commodore would not be his son-in-law, he would
not be Elizabeth’s husband but he would always be a part of their lives. Not
matter how awkward and painful it was for all parties.

Yet, in his heart, Governor Swann couldn’t help but feel that the man next to
him would find what he deserved. He had no doubt the man would find it, in fact.
Perhaps it was not with his daughter but the man would find it. Maybe even out
in those waters he seemed to long for.
