Waiting
Future let them sleep on the couch. It was crowded in there with the four of them but there was really nowhere else Jimmy could go. It had started to snow outside and a blueish glow emanated from the window even with all lights out.
Jimmy let Lilly have most of the couch even though when she was all stretched out she barely covered half of it. He wasn’t going to be able to sleep anyway. He watched the snow fall from a low slouch and thought about innocence and how quickly it could be taken away. The city was dark and dirty but whenever it first snowed that whiteness blanketed everything out. If someone took away your innocence could you ever get it back? He stayed perched on the end of the sofa and remained deep in thought. He must have drifted off sometime in the night because he was pretty sure he was dreaming.
There was fire everywhere and he could hear Lilly crying for him. The house was big and there were too many rooms. He couldn’t find her fast enough. A ceiling beam full of flames came swinging down into his face and he woke up short of breath with his arms clawing at the imaginary threat.
“Shit!” Jasmine fell away from him as if attacked. Her alarmed face slowly came into focus along with the shapes of the dark apartment.
“Lilly?” Jimmy tried to orient himself quicker but all he could see was the fire burning everything away.
A little body stirred next to him and he felt cold fingers clench around his wrist. He turned to see wide brown eyes starring at him. She looked as scared as Jasmine. Shit.
“I was dreaming.” He said quietly, unsure of who he was trying to sooth first.
Jasmine’s voice cut into him; “Yeah no shit. You nearly took my face off.” She looked at Lilly and softened her tone a bit “What was you dreaming about anyway?”
“Where’s Future?” He ignored her question. He really didn’t feel like dealing with her right now. He closed his fingers around Lilly’s small hand.
“You mean David? Where’d David go?” Her eyes rolled up in her head with annoyance as she shook her head side to side. She seemed ready for a fight.
He nodded. God he hated her.
“He said he had to go get the boys rounded up and that I should let you sleep.”
“We shouldn’t be here. I didn’t know… you’d… be… here.”
“Whatever Jimmy.” Her eyes slide by him and focused on Lilly. “Hey there sweet thing, you hungry?”
