Selfless
Chapter 2
Lancelot looked around at the dejected faces of the knights. They had been searching day and night for a week and had found no trace of a clue that would lead them to Arthur. Lancelot sighed. For all they knew, Arthur could be—
no, he couldn’t think like that. Arthur wasn’t dead, he couldn’t be.
Just then, the door burst open and there he was. He walked purposely to his seat and sat down heavily.
“Arthur…,” Lancelot said, taking in his leader’s shocking appearance. Arthur’s face was haggard but set in determination. “What happened?”
Arthur looked deep into Lancelot’s concerned and confused eyes. He couldn’t tell him. He couldn’t tell any of them. There was nothing they could do. The danger was too great. He had to do it alone.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“How did you escape?” Lancelot pressed.
“I said it didn’t matter,” Arthur replied harshly. He then softened his tone as he saw the hurt in the eyes of the man he loved. “What matters is I’m here now, though not for long.”
“What do you mean? Why would you leave?” Galahad asked.
“Because I must,” he said before walking out.
“That’s very nice,” Bors said sarcastically. “We search a week for him only to have him walk in here like nothing happened. Now he has to leave! I, for one, want to know what the hell is going on!”
“As do I,” Lancelot stated, following after Arthur.
“Arthur!” he called, running to catch up with his friend and leader.
“Leave me be, Lance,” Arthur said warningly.
“You are not pushing me away!” Lancelot grabbed his shoulder, turned him around, and kissed him with all the love and passion he possessed. He pulled away and looked into Arthur’s stunned face. “When you were taken and we cn’t n’t find you, I was devastated because I never got a chance to tell you how much I love you. Now you come back and act like nothing happened! Not only that, but then you say you have to leave me again! Well, I say no! I demand an explanation!”
“Lancelot,” Arthur murmured before pulling him into a deep and passionate kiss. He held the kiss until his lungs were about to explode before pulling away. “It is because I love you that I can’t tell you! I can’t put you in danger!”
“What danger?” Lancelot asked fiercely. “What harm could come from telling me what happened?”
“It’s what you would do after I tell you that I fear,” Arthur said. “I must do this alone.”
“You’re not leave without me!” Lancelot stated vehemently. “I’m going with you whether you like it or not. You might as well tell me where and why we’re going.”
Arthur sighed. “Must you be so stubborn.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t want you hurt. I can’t risk losing you just to save myself,” Arthur whispered.
“And I can’t lose you without even trying to help you,” Lancelot replied.
“Fine. I guess you deserve to know.
