The Devil’s Bride

Chapter 2 Cursed

The streets had grown so unfamiliar to her, yet she knew them like the back of her own hand. The friendly faces she once knew now wore a constant sneer when she walked pass, or worse yet, were completely indifferent. That hurt more than the out right name-calling. At least shdn’tdn’t feel like a ghost when people acknowledged her presence, be it may negatively. Despite the warm Caribbean climate, Elizabeth Swan felt as though a block of ice had taken up permanent residence in the pit of her stomach. The only time she felt it melt away was when she visited Will at the smithy. Which was exactly where she was headed. Only when she was alone with him, could she forget about the consequences of there little pirate adventure.

At first she noticed the stares and whispers. Then her friends no longer came to visit. Soon her own maids wouldn’t even chit chat with her. And early one morning when the maids must have thought her asleep, she heard the gossip for herself.

“Then after accepting his proposal, she breaks his poor heart and agrees to marry that Will Turner. A penniless blacksmith that sails with pirates”

“Supposedly his father was the infamous Bootstrap Turner, piracy seems to run in the family.”

“I think she must have a thing for pirates. The day that Jack Sparrow threatened her, she seemed hardly upset. Nay! I’d say she seemed to like being harassed by the filthy scoundrel.”

“Well, you know what I heard, I heard the Dauntless found her and Jack Sparrow alone on a deserted island together. Apparently they were so busy making the beast with two backs, they didn’t even notice nor care that they were being rescued. That’s the real reason why Commodore Norrington wanted Jack Sparrow hung.”

“Then its no wonder he didn’t protest her change of mind, I mean after being ruined by a pirate and all.”

“Yes, who would take a whore for a wife.”

The memory was so recent and bitter that she could almost taste it, yet nearly a year had dragged by since. What they had said was true. Well, except the part about her sleeping with Jack. But she had to admit to herself that the thought had crossed her mind, and it wasn’t just the rum.

She wanted nothing more than to marry Will and move to another island and start over. But with Will’s meager income that would most likely never happen. He too had been snubbed by society. Upon there return, his blacksmith apprenticeship was immediately dropped. He opened his own blacksmith shop only to learn that despite his amazing talent, people would rather buy a lesser quality sword from a drunk, than from a rumored pirate.

Elizabeth had never in her life felt so trapped. It was as though she had been welded into an iron corset. Even when she was Barbossa’s hostage, she felt freer than she did right now. She and Will’s only escape were the memories of their adventure, and more often than not, that was how they spent their evenings together. Elizabeth would sneak out of her father’s house and go to his monk-like quarters in the back of his small shop. She would bring him dinner, and while he ate they would sit and remince together. As Elizabeth opened the door to the smithy, she couldn’t help but think that although they had ended the curse for Barbossa’s crew, they were now the ones who were only half alive.
