Eavesdropping

Something Different by Kerimack

Summary: Kathryn overhears something interesting when Sebastian breaks up with Annette

Chapter 2: Eavesdropping

"I think we should stop seeing each other"
The sentence hung in the air between them. It was what Sebastian had been trying to tell Annette all day. He had invited her over to his place and tried to do it right away but couldn't. He knew he had to if he wanted to collect his winnings from Kathryn. Even though he knew he didn't love Annette, he did like her and really wasn't looking forward to breaking her heart.
So instead he put the break up on hold and they had lunch. The whole time Annette was planning there future together. She had all these things she wanted to do with him once they were officially a couple. Sebastian sat smiling, waiting for the opportunity to come up when he could dump her.
After lunch Annette suggested they go to his room. When they got there she began kissing him and her hands went towards his pants. He knew she wanted to have a repeat performance of last nights activities and Sebastian was tempted at first to give in. But he knew that if Kathryn found out that he slept with Annette again any chance he had of getting her into bed would be gone. At the moment his need for Kathryn far out weighed any temporary lust he had for Annette. So instead he pushed away Annette and the sentence he had been trying to get out all day finally came out.
The smile on her face dropped immediately. She stared at him hard for a second then the smile returned and she laughed a little "Ya. I think we should break up too"
Oh great she thinks its a joke he thought. "No, I'm serious. I want to end this"
Annette's mouth fell open a little and tears began to form in her eyes "Why are you saying this?"
"Because its how I feel. I don't love you Annette. I tried to make myself love you but I just don't. I'm sorry"
"You're sorry? I'm in love with you! I gave myself to you!"
"I know. I appreciate it but I don't feel the same way about you and if I pretend I do I'm just going to hurt you in the long run"
She was now sobbing loudly "Tell me the truth Sebastian. What's really going on?"
"That is the truth." The whole scene was starting to get to him. He wished she would just leave already. Usually he had no problem breaking girls hearts but he actually was feeling somewhat guilty for what he had done. I'm becoming such a pussy he thought.
She stopped crying a little and wiped her eyes "No. No there's more to it then that. You just don't tell someone you love them then take it back the next day. What aren't you telling me?"
Sebastian could tell she wasn't going to let this go. For a second he considered telling her all about the bet he made with Kathryn but he quickly realized that would only cause more problems. What came out of his mouth next surprised even him. "The truth is...I'm in love with someone else"

Kathryn arrived home a few minutes after Annette and Sebastian when into his room. She had been out shopping for the past few hours purposely avoidine hoe house. Sebastian had told her at breakfast that morning that he was going to invite Annette over and break up with her. He had requested that Kathryn not be there since he knew that her being there would only distract him from his task. Kathryn had agreed, so she left right before Annette arrived. She had expected Annette to be long gone by the time she returned so she was surprised when she heard voices coming from her step brothers room.
Kathryn put her packages in her room and went and placed her ear against Sebastain's door. She could barely hear anything over Annette's cries. Christ could that girl be any more pathetic she thought. Finally she was able to make out Sebastian's voice.
"Look I didn't plan for this to happen. I've known this girl for awhile now and it wasn't until I met you that I realized I had these feelings for her"
"That doesn't make any sense. How long have you been seeing her?"
There was silence for a second. Kathryn was trying to figure out what they were talking about. Who was Sebastian talking about?
"We've been close for about three years. We haven't been exactly exclusive but she recently told me she wanted that to change"
Sebastian explained.
"And you're in love with her?"
"Yes , I am. I'm sorry, I didn't want to hurt you"
Kathryn pulled away from the door for a second. Her head was spinning. Did Sebastian just confess to being in love with her? She knew he cared about her, but loved her? She didn't know what to do with this information. She adored Sebastian more than any other guy she's ever known, but she wasn't sure it was love. She really didn't believe in love and she thought Sebastian felt the same way.
Maybe he was just saying this to break up this Annette. Maybe he couldn't come up with a better excuse. But then why was he using all this information about there relationship she wondered. Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard them heading to the door. Kathryn quickly slipped back into her room. She didn't want Sebastian to know that she had returned or that she had over heard there conversation. She could hear them talking in the hall but couldn't make out what they were saying. She finally gave up on her eavesdropping and went and laid on her bed. She had a lot of thinking to do.

Later that night Sebastian knocked on Kathryn's door. He had told her that morning to be ready for him by 9:00. She had agreed so long as he got rid of Annette. He had yet to tell her about his break up with Annette. He decided to wait until later that night.
He waited at her door for her to answer. When he heard nothing he opened her door and found her sleeping on her bed. He rolled his eyes. This didn't surprise him at all. He knew Kathryn would pull something, but he wasn'out out to let her slumbering stop him from getting what he wanted.
He walked over to bed bed and studied her for a second. He wished he had brought his camera, she looked so beautiful when she slept. Almost angelic even. He laughed at the thought.
Sebastian pulled back the sheet that was covering her and noticed that she was wearing only her bra and underwear. He placed his hand on her bare stomach and marveled at how soft she was. She was exquisite. He brought his hand to her face and caressed her cheek, it would almost be a shame to wake her. But he did anyway. He sat down next to her and whispered in her ear "Wake up baby. Time to pay up"
Kathryn slowly began to stir and looked up at him confused for a second. She shook her head as if remembering something then smiled at him. "Sorry. I must have fallen asleep"
"How convenient" he murmured as he bent down and kissed her lips.
She kissed him back and then pulled away. "I did. I was waiting for you" she looked over at her clock. "I thought you said 8:00"
"No nine. Aren't you curious how things went?"
She shrugged "I take it you broke up with her"
"I did. I thought you would want some kind of proof. I was expecting to have to jump through all sorts of hoops tonight"
"No hoops. I believe you"
"Uuh"uh" Kathryn had a weird expression on her face "What are you hiding?"
She was quiet for a moment "I heard you break up with Annette"
Sebastian rolled his eyes "Why doesn't that surprise me? I thought you would be gone for the day?"
"I was! I thought you would be finished when I got back, but then I heard you two talking..."
"You were eavesdropping?" He shook his head "I told you I was going to break up with her"
"I know. I was jus making sure you didn't wuss out"
Sebastian sighed "Well whatever. It's done" He leaned over and cupped her face giving her a long, sweet kiss.
But as usual she pushed him away. "There's something I have to ask you about first"
He let out a loud groan of frustration "Now what?"
"I heard you tell Annette that..you..um..love me."
Sebastian hadn't expected that. He had forgotten what he had told Annette about being in love with someone else. Truth be told he wasn't sure why he told her that. He expected Kathryn to be laughing she she was just staring at him with an odd expression on her face. "Ya. I told her that. What makes you think I was talking about you"
Kathryn rolled her eyes "Gee I don't know. How many other girls have you been close to for the past three years?" He didn't answer because he knew it was obvious he was talking bout her. "So did you mean it?"
Sebastian desperately did not want to answer that question. He knew either way it would leave him vulnerable for her attacks and he didn't feel like playing mind games with her at the moment. "I don't know. Do you love me?"
He could tell she didn't expect that. He smiled at her speechlessness and then laughed. He stopped when he realized she wasn't laughing. "Well?" He asked waiting for her to answer.
Kathryn sat up and smiled at him slowly. She then pulled him toward her and whispered "I don't feel like talking anymore"
"Good" he whispered back. She then pulled him into an intense kiss. Kathryn laid back on the bed pulling him down on top of her. It was going to be an interesting night.
