Restless

Chapter 2: Restless

The nights in Belloso are very cool. The window in Riddick’s room is open and a chilly wind sneaks inside. Jack shivers in her bed, trying to find warmth from Riddick’s body, but she finds him gone. Her eyes flutter open and shts ots on the bed. She’s already grown accustomed to this routine. In the past few weeks Riddick’s sleeplessness had taken a toll on her as well. Riddick is sitting on what he calls ‘Jack’s window’ its where Jack always sits to watch the kids play in the yard or read her books. He’s staring contently outside, his mind far away.

“Everything OK?” Jack’s sweet voice asks. Riddick looks over to her and nods.

“Sorry. I woke you up again didn’t I?” he says. Jack gets out of bed and walks over to him; she kneels down in front of him and places her head on his lap.

“Its okay. Don’t want to sleep without you anyway” Riddick plays with her hair and she closes her eyes, “What is it now Riddick?” she asks.

“It’s getting stronger. Whatever it is, it’s growing. Jason can feel it too you know” he adds. Jack raises her head and smiles.

“I know. No worries, alright? Come back to bed, I’ll get you something warm to drink” she stands and heads for the kitchen. Walking down the stairs Jack thinks about what Riddick just told her. She tries to be strong for him, not let him see the concern in her eyes, but Riddick never had a problem identifying a presence before. This is definitely different and it scares her. Jack enters the kitchen and freezes when she sees the shadow of another person.

“Oh shit!, Jason! What in this world are doing in the dark?” she switches the lights on he ghe giggles.

“Sorry Aunt J, I can’t sleep” Jason is sitting on a stool in the kitchen looking outside the window towards the sky.

“You either, huh?” Jack sits next to him for a moment, waiting to see if there is anything he wants to tell her.

“Aunt J, can I tell you something?” he asks and she nods. “I have a very bad feeling. Not like the ones I’ve gotten before, now it’s . . . I don’t know I feel like something evil is coming. When I concentrate I can feel a lot of sadness, fear, but most of all I can feel hatred. Something wicked is out there.” Jack has never heard Jason sound so scared and confused. She’s stays silent, not really knowing what to say, after all she’s scared too.

“Listen, I’m going to tell you the same thing I told Rid, get some rest. No more worrying for tonight OK? Get some sleep sweetie” Jack kisses him on the forehead and they head their separate ways.

Back in their bedroom, Riddick is already on the bed, still awake. Jack hands him the cup of milk. Funny how such a big man can become relaxed with just a cup of warm milk. He places the empty cup on the nightstand and pats the bed for Jack to lie next to him. She snuggles against him, placing her head on his chest and taking in his scent.

“Jack” Riddick calls. She manages a muffled ‘ahuh’ he pauses, “Never mind”

Jack sits up quickly, “Don’t do that. I hate it when you do that. Tell Me,” she demands and Riddick begins to laugh.

“Calm down my Queen. How about I show you what I wanted to say” he slides her tank top off and caresses her breasts. Jack keeps her deadpan face.

“Don’t even think you’re getting off that easy” Riddick shuts her up quickly with a passionate kiss that leaves Jack breathless. Riddick backs away quickly to see the expression on her face; he loves it! Jack smiles and pounces him. They make love all night. Needless to say Riddick did get off and so did she.

To be continued. . .
