“Pierre, what was this? Did you hit something?” the duke of Cherrion yelled at his coachman.

The carriage stopped and an old man with white hair and big blue eyes got to the window saying:
“The horse hit a man, Excellency. I swear I did not see him! It’s so dark and he is wearing a black cape…” the man said with trembling voice.

Before he could finish talking, Melanie de Cherrion, daughter of the duke yelled:

“Mon Dieux, Pierre, help me down, we need to take this poor man to a doctor.”

“No, no, Melanie. Let Pierre and Jean deal with the matter.” the duke said.

He had just finished his sentence when he saw his daughter on the street running towards the man who was stretched in front of the carriage.

“Damn.” cursed the duke. “She is just like her mother! Melanie, get back here.” he yelled at his daughter. “If it wasn’t for this leg…” he completed muttering the last words for himself.

Melanie returned breathing hard and as pale as the snow, which surrounded them.

“Daddy, he is bleeding a lot. His head in wounded. And… well, you won’t believe it… his face is…”

“What of his face Melanie?”

“It’s deformed. It looks like a mask! I think he is the… the…”

“The Phantom? The Phantom of the Opera?!”

“Yes…”

“Leave him where he is. He is a murderer. The police is searching for him, soon they will find him here.”

“If he stays he will die!”

“We can’t do anything about that. Let the police… Melanie, where are you going? Melanie!”

The young woman didn’t want to listen to her father. From beneath her cape she took a scarf and wrapped it around Erik’s head.

“Help me here. We’ve got to tie it as firmly as we can. We need to stop the bleeding. Then help me take him to the carriage.”

The two employees looked at her in awe and then at Erik, not knowing if they should obey her or not.

“Move you two. What are you waiting for? Do you want him to die?” came the imperious voice of the duchess. “Pierre, close your mouth and come here help me! Take him by his feet. Jean, put your hands under his shoulders to support him. Good. Now to the carriage.”

“Dear God duchess, he is too big and heavy! How are we going to lift him to put in the carriage?”

Melanie did not bother to answer. She simply opened the coach’s door and climbed in.

“Daddy, your leg does not allow you to walk properly, but your arms are strong. Please, help them pull this man inside.” she pleaded her father.

“Are you mad? We cannot take him! The police will think we are hiding a murderer!”

“Please, stop with the police talking. This man needs help!”

With great difficulty they managed to take Erik inside the coach and on one of the benches. Melanie laid his head on her lap, staining her dress with blood. However, the tight cloth around his head was doing its work. The bleeding was stopping.

“Let’s go home, Pierre, before someone sees us. With all the commotion you caused, I’m impressed no one did!” the duke’s voice showed his irritation more with the fact that he could not deny his daughter anything, then with the morbid creature who was laying in front of him.

The carriage shot through the night. Soon they would be home with their precious, yet dreadful load.
