Chapter 2

Sam closed her eyes and let the atmosphere wash over her; she had plenty of time to get what she needed. A lot of people knew who she was, they didn’t care, if she was here then she was racing or she was part of somebody’s crew. Occasionally press got into organized races but as soon as they photographed people or started asking questions they were escorted out and their films were destroyed.

So she was ok as long as she stuck to the rules.

“Sam? Samantha?” A voice called from behind and it broke Sam from her thoughts, she turned to face the voice and felt her stomach freeze.

“Sam, it is you, isn’t it?” Sam plastered a smile to her face and answered.

“Mia, my God, look at you!” She sounded chipper. That was good.

“I know, it’s been what? Seven years?” Mia still had a look of mild shock on her face.

“Yep, about that. You’ve grown girl, you were a baby the last time I saw you, now look at you.” Sam was genuine when she spoke, she had loved Mia like a sister for the brief time they were around each other, that the girl even remembered her was just short of a miracle.

“Let’s go get a drink, oh; you’re not busy are you?” Mia frowned at the thought and Sam smiled brightly at the hopeful look on her face.

“No, I’m good.” Sam gestured for Mia to wait a moment while she repacked her equipment into the bag and then motioned for Mia to follow her as she made her way back to her car.

Sam popped the trunk and loaded her bag back into it, she closed the trunk and found Mia staring at the car.

“What?” Sam asked.

It’s an Rx 7.” Mia replied with a smile.

“So?” Sam questioned.

“Nothing, come on, lets go catch up.” Mia linked arms with Sam and dragged her across the dirt paths to a drinks tent.

Mia and Sam found an empty table and sat down.

“So what about you? What are you doing with yourself these days?” Sam questioned and she watched Mia’s face light up.

“I’m going to college, I love it, and I’m doing pre med.” Mia beamed.

“Wow, I’m so proud.” Sam felt a moment of unease; she had no right to maternal feelings for Mia anymore.

“Why didn’t you stay in touch?” Mia blurted, her face clouded with sadness as she asked the question.

“We moved, I only moved back to L.A about two years ago, and I did what I thought was best at the time.” Sam answered as truthfully as she could.

“So, you’re a big shot sports journalist now, huh? I’m amazed they let you in.” Mia changed the subject and Sam sighed in relief.

“I’m racing.” Sam explained.

“Wow.” Mia said and then whistled.

“You still as good as you used to be?” Mai asked with a wicked smile.

“Only time will tell.” Sam laughed as she answered.

A sudden thought crossed Sam’s mind and she blurted it out.

“Your not racing are you?”

Mia smiled and shook her head.

“No, I’m just here with…everyone.” Mia hesitated at the last.

Sam almost winced.

“Mia!” a voice called from a distance. Mia turned to look at the voice at the same time that Sam lifted her eyes.

Dominic Toretto stood in the sunlight beckoning his baby sister.

Sam did wince this time. Fucking Dominic Toretto, he was still as beautiful as she remembered him.
