CHAPTER ONE
The day had been somewhat of an ordeal since waking up. Carl was tired now and his body ached from the hard labor required of him to cleanse his soul from the evil sin he had confessed earlier that morning. Normally he spent his days in the cool lab, but today had been spent outside in the blistering heat. He wore simple pants and a light cotton shirt, soaked through now with the sweat of labor.
The shirt currently left little to the imagination and might as well not have been there at all. He had finished the task laid out to him, a task which would have taken anyone else a couple of hours, but Carl was not known for his strength. He was a scientist not a mason. He pulled a bucket of cold water out of the well and dumped it over his head, shaking his hair and gasping at the sensation. That felt far too good.
Carl frowned, wondering what the commotion was at the other end of the courtyard. A number of monks had gathered and he could see the red of Cardinal Jinnette’s robes. Then his heart skipped a beat before he could stop it. A familiar hat could be seen above all the other heads in the crowd.
Gabriel was back.
Not thinking, the friar stole his way closer to the crowd hiding behind pillars for he was not really supposed to be here. He was supposed to be going back to the cloisters. But, it was Gabriel! He peaked out from behind a pillar once he was close enough to hear and gasped. The monks were struggling to contain a monster within a cage, the very monster Van Helsing had been sent to kill or return. He’d never managed to bring one back alive before and instead of praising him, Jinnette was screaming at him for the damage he’d caused in Naples.
Even from afar, Carl could sense his friends ire. Gabriel was absolutely furious. Something awful had happened, the knots twisted in the friar’s stomach. It was so good to see the man again, alive and well. He looked exhausted, and probably needed a few good nights of rest. And a bath. As the creature was led away, Jinnette went to far and the argument finally snapped Van Helsing’s temper.
The tall man reached out and grasped the Cardinal by the throat, anger flashing in his vivid dark eyes. He lifted the struggling man into the air, ignoring the other monks who attempted to disengage them, tossing one aside and kicking at another. "I don’t go by your rules," the hunter spat. "I go by -mine-. This one can be saved. I do whatever is necessary to get the job done. I saved the vials of San Gennaro’s blood and brought this creature to you. Do with it what you will." with that he dropped the Cardinal.
"In full view of a hundred people in broad daylight!" Jinnette picked himself up rubbing his throat. "You are out of control Gabriel."
"It was the only way to get the creature in a weakened state!" Gabriel shot back, gaining control over his ire only when he noticed that he had an audience. Carl… Gabriel’s eyebrows knitted together. Why did he look like that? His face was sunburnt and…
The hunter’s attention was drawn back to Jinnette when the Cardinal spoke again, hard and cold. "You know the price for disobedience to the order." said Jinnette.
"I do," replied the hunter, his attention returning to the young friar. The scowl did not leave his face, in fact, a new anger was simmering.
"Will you submit to this? Or will you make me banish you?" He glared hard at the warrior, ignoring Carl completely.
A war waged within Gabriel as he dragged his gaze away from the young man who stared in some shock at him. The friar’s brilliant blue eyes were as clear as ever. They pierced his very soul as they often did and he found himself swallowing back an angry retort. He knew what the penance was and that he had pushed Jinnette to his limit. The Cardinal -would- banish him if he did not comply.
If this happened…he would never see Carl again. He would forever dream of the young man’s golden hair and shining eyes, and… it was so wrong. So utterly and totally wrong. He -should- leave. If just to protect Carl from his depravity. The young man had no idea how he felt, no idea about anything beyond the Abby. It was up to Gabriel to protect that innocence.
Gabriel needed Carl to keep him sane. He needed it like a man needed air to breathe or water to drink. His fingers twitched and he glared hard back at Jinnette. "I will submit," he said between his teeth.
Carl moved forward, his blood beginning to chill. Concern for Gabriel overshadowed the fact that he really was not supposed to be there.
"Kneel," Jinnette commanded, still ignoring Carl. "And remove your shirt and weapons." The Cardinal was known for his harsh measures when it came to punishment for Sins. Especially the Sin of willfulness against him in particular. "Gabriel Van Helsing." he said clearly, his voice ringing. "You will be given 100 lashes. After each lash, you will praise Holy Mary for your salvation. You will then kneel before the altar in the chamber of silence for two days and two nights. At which point, your body will be cleansed from the evil that caused this act. You will remain in the abby to heal for fourteen days. During this time you will neither carry, nor use a weapon. When that time is done, you will leave the Vatican for a hundred and one days. You may return upon the completion of your penance and be forgiven. Another hunter shall take your place until you have completed this penance."
Gabriel slowly began to do as required, his eyes divided now between Carl and Jinnette.
The friar then did something he had never done before, he rushed up to Jinnette and tugged on his robes, gaining a scowl from the Cardinal. "No! Can’t you see he’s already hurt? He needs … "
"Carl, this is not your concern." Jinnette said clearly. "Why are you not back in your room?"
"I am headed there directly," Carl replied hurriedly. "This is … "
"The will of God.. Now, return to your room as you were instructed. This is nothing to do with you, Carl." Jinnette’s tone calmed considerably as he spoke for him. He always did have a soft spot for Carl, and he knew Van Helsing was friends with the friar. Still, Gabriel had pushed him too far and he was not going to allow this impudence to continue."
"Its alright, Carl." Gabriel said softly as he began to remove his shirt. "It is what I deserve." He held the young man’s eyes, his own heart singing because this truly meant Carl cared for him even if only as a friend. For that he would walk through fire. "Please take a look at this one." he handed the young man one of his many weapons. "It failed to deploy, I think I jammed it." At the contact, their fingers brushed together and perhaps he lingered a little too long for Jinnette cleared his throat.
Carl nodded, knowing that there was nothing he could do. He clutched the weapon and stepping back.
"Enough of this." Jinnette snapped. "Take him, and do Gods Will." The Cardinal turned and stalked away.
The monks were about to drag Gabriel away, but he did not resist and walked with them. He half smiled as he glanced over his shoulder to see Carl gathering his things together from where they lay on the ground.
