A Grim Discovery
Chapter 2: A Grim Discovery
The cellar door noisily creaked open, shedding the dim light of the kitchen down the wooden steps to the stone floor below.
Joey, Anthony and Steven cautiously entered the cellar and made their way slowly down the wooden steps. Reaching the bottom, Joey turned on the cellar lights and looked around.
“This is where I found my mom’s body, so spread out and start searching the place, I need to know if my suspicions are correct before I start searching for the box again.”
Anthony moved off to the left and started looking around, casting his gaze over the bloodstained floor his eyes finally came to rest upon a casket shaped box.
“Hey Joey, over here.”
“What is it?” Asked Joey, almost immediately appearing at his side.
“What do you think could be in it?”
Joey shook her head. “We’d best try and get it open, and it’s the only way we’re gunna find out. Steve, get over here and give us a hand.”
Steven came over almost immediately and stared at the box.
“I’m not sure about this Joey.”
“Steve, I need to know what’s in here, I’ve never seen it before.”
Steven reluctantly nodded and helped Joey and Anthony remove the heavy wooden lid.
The lid dropped to the stone floor with a loud thud.
Looking inside Joey discovered several books and files, all piled up neatly in no particular order.
“They’re probably just my mom’s old journals and scripts for her TV interviews from when she used to be a reporter.”
“Could be,” Replied Steven. “But we’re not going to find out unless we go through them.”
Joey nodded and blew away the dust.
She frowned and cocked her head slightly as she found what looked like an old videotape.
“Hey look at this.” Said Anthony, receiving Joey’s immediate attention.
“What is it?” She asked.
“It’s the configuration box.”
Anthony handed her the folder, sure enough, were the scribbled down drawings of the different angles of the configuration box.
Joey stared at it then widened her eyes with horror when she realized what they were.
“These are the original designs of the box from hundreds of years ago, look at the signature and the dates. Philippe Le-Merchant, 1796, a French toy maker, he’s gotta be the one who made this box.”
“So what are you trying to say?” Asked Steven.
“That we need to hurry up and find that box and find a way to destroy it. I also found this.”
She held the tape up and showed it to Steven and Anthony, earning a confused look from the pair as she did so.
Back upstairs in the front room, Joey put the tape into the video player and sat back with Anthony and Steven as the TV buzzed to life.
As the video started a young girl dressed in white appeared.
Joey’s eyes narrowed as she continued to watch.
I know that girl from somewhere, but where and when?
“Again, the box.” Said the voice from the TV.
Joey’s head jerked up, her eyes fixed on the screen.
The box? She knows about the box, but that can only mean one thing…
“That’s Kirsty Cotton!” She blurted out before her brain could think of the words.
“How else would she know about the box? It has to be her.”
Anthony and Steven looked at Joey then continued to watch the screen as the young girl continued to explain her knowledge of the box.
“Demon’s live in the box, it’s a gateway to Hell.”
Suddenly the screen fuzzed and a middle-aged war officer appeared, his blue eyes stared at the three teenagers.
“You know she’s telling the truth Joey Summerskill Junior.”
After that his image faded and the screen faded to black.
“What the…?” Asked Joey as she rewound the tape and played it back from the part where the man had appeared, but his image failed to show again and instead after the girl had finished talking it ended and faded to black, leaving the three confused teenagers staring silently at the blank screen.
Joey turned off the video and angrily stormed from the room.
“How the fuck did that guy appear on the tape and how does he know my name?” She shouted angrily as she stormed back down to the cellar, closely followed by Anthony and Steven.
“Joey just calm down a minute,” Said Anthony as he struggled to keep up with her.
“Calm down?” Snapped Joey angrily.
“That freaky war guy appeared out of nowhere and he knows who I am, how the fuck do you want me to be calm?”
Suddenly Joey slipped and fell down the stairs, landing at the bottom on the stone cold floor with a slight thud.
“Joey are you okay?” Asked Steven, rushing down to where she lay.
“Yean, I’m fine, I slipped on…”
Joey’s eyes went wide with horror as she noticed a long black barbed hooked chain lying beside her.
“Oh God, I was right, Pinhead did kill my mom, here’s my proof.”
She held up the chain before Anthony and Steven’s shocked eyes.
“So that demon did kill her.” Snarled Steven, angrily trying to fight back the tears that threatened to flood his dark brown eyes.
“Hey what’s that?” Asked Anthony, pointing to a folded piece of paper sticking out of the large wooden box where they had found the videotape.
Joey staggered to her feet and walked over to the chest.
Picking up the piece of paper, she unfolded it and revealed it to be an old black and white photograph, her eyes widened when she realized who it was.
“Hey Anthony, Steven, it’s the war officer from the video tape.”
Anthony and Steven rushed over to Joey and stared at the photograph, sure enough it was the old war soldier.
“How come there’s this guys picture in your mom’s cellar?” Asked Anthony, looking rather confused at the photograph.
Joey shrugged. “I dunno but I can bet my life that it’s gotta have something to do with my mom’s death.
Putting the photograph down she turned her attention back towards the chest and continued her rummaging until finally she came across something she had not expected to find.
“Oh my God!” She gasped in horror, shakily reaching into the chest.
“What, what is it?” Asked Anthony.
“It’s my step father’s dead body! Pinhead must’ve killed him too.”
Steven gasped in shock as Joey pulled the mutilated corpse, still dripping blood and attached to several jet black barbed hooked chains out of the chest.
Anthony choked and stepped back in horror, now he truly knew the shock and horror that Joey went through when she found her mother’s own mutilated corpse.
Suddenly a large cube like object dropped from the corpse’s hand and rolled across the floor, stopping at Joey’s feet.
Joey’s gaze turned downward, her eyes growing wide with shock as she instantly recognized the gold patterned cube resting at her feet.
“The box!” She gasped in horror as she bent to retrieve it.
“Be careful Joey.” Warned Anthony, his concern for her safety increasing as he watched her turn the box in her hands, making sure it was the object she was looking for.
Joey stared at it angrily as the gold patterns glistened in the dim light of the cellar.
Okay Pinhead, you may have won this battle and claimed my mother and step father’s lives, but you haven’t won the war and if I have my way, you never will.
Joey turned and headed back up the stairs, Anthony and Steven stood in shock and watched as she left the cellar.
“Joey what are you doing?” Asked Steven, finally finding his voice and following Joey up the stairs, Anthony followed closely behind.
“I’m gunna do what I should’ve done six years ago.” She snarled angrily.
“I’m gunna summon Pinhead and destroy him once and for all, sending him back down to Hell and hiding the box obviously isn’t working anymore and I refuse to let one more innocent soul be sent to Hell because of my stupid mistakes.”
Anthony gasped in horror.
“No Joey you can’t, I won’t let you.” He grabbed Joey and spun her round to face him.
“Let go of me Anthony.” Snarled Joey, anger flashing in her ocean blue eyes.
“No, I won’t lose you to that monster.”
Joey shook herself free from Anthony’s grip and stormed into the living room.
“The only one who is going to lose is that bastard Pinhead, he’s messed with me one too many times and this time he’s pushed me too far.”
She turned her gaze to the window and then put the box down on the floor.
She then turned and left the room.
“Joey what are you doing?” Asked Steven.
“I’m gunna find out where I can find Kirsty Cotton. If I’m gunna find Pinhead and destroy him I’m gunna need help.”
“What if she refuses to help you?” Asked Anthony.
Joey swallowed hard.
“Then I’ll just have to have faith in my own powers won’t I, but I know all too well that telekinetic powers alone aren’t enough to slay a cenobite.”
Anthony swallowed hard and put his hand on Joey’s shoulder.
“Joey, you know I’ve always been against your cenobite slaying, but if need be, I’ll help you destroy Pinhead.”
Joey spun round to face her boyfriend.
“Anthony you don’t have to do this.” She said calmly, hiding her shock well as she stared into his eyes.
“I know, but if you’re going off to risk your life trying to save the lives of hundreds of others, I’m willing to be there for you.”
Joey smiled and hugged him gratefully.
Steven stepped forward.
“You have my support too, Joey.”
Joey smiled and nodded.
“This means a lot to me guys. Thanks.”
Turning away to look out the window Joey pondered her fate.
I know what I have to do, and if it requires my soul, so be it. I will not allow him to walk the earth again as long as I live, and with Anthony and Steven by my side to help me, our odds of success have significantly increased.
Joey turned her gaze towards the box and narrowed her eyes angrily, the very sight of it made her sick to her stomach, but remembering all the souls she had freed from the clutches of Hell made it all worth while.
Mom, I know I wasn’t there to save you and I’m sorry, but I won’t fail to save innocent people from the powers of Hell again.
Staring out of the window at the starry night, Joey turned her thoughts away from her mother and began thinking about her upcoming fight with Pinhead, her telekinetic powers were strong, but she couldn’t help doubting them, especially now that two people close to her had been killed by Hell’s powers, she should’ve sensed Pinhead’s return, so why couldn’t she stop her mother and step father from being killed.
Angrily shaking those horrible thoughts from her head, Joey turned her gaze back to the box and continued to stare at it.
It’s over Pinhead, your reign of terror and thriving on the pain of others is at an end, you’ve stolen your last soul and this time when you go to Hell I’ll make sure you stay there.
The cellar door noisily creaked open, shedding the dim light of the kitchen down the wooden steps to the stone floor below.
