Chapter II – Unfavorable Tidings

The air was filled with tension and thoughts. The circular council chamber lay in darkness, illuminated merely by the flickering lights of Coruscant beyond the glass walls. Anakin’s hand fidgeted with the end of his tunic nervously, waiting anxiously for one of the Jedi Masters to answer Qui-gon’s question. Finally the Jedi known as Master Windu spoke.

“No, he will not be trained.”

His heart stopped for half a moment. The statement was short, yet so final and crushing. No?! Qui-gon voiced his thoughts;

“No?”

“He is too old,” Master Windu simply replied. What does that mean? Anakin thought widly, striving to steady his shaking hands at his sides. Too old to be a Jedi?! Will they send me back to Tatooine? Will I be a slave again?

“He is the chosen one,” Qui-gon insisted, “You must see it!”

Chosen one? What am I chosen for? Anakin’s forehead creased in worry. What were they all talking about? Why was he too old? Master Yoda closed his eyes in thought. He seems to be kinder; maybe he’ll let me stay!

“Mmmmm, clouded this boy’s future is,” the small Master murmured.

And then there was more silence. Silence so heavy it seemed to press down atop Anakin’s shoulders. The weight of his future proved a profound burden. He heard Qui-gon stir behind him, and felt his hands resting on his shoulders.

“I will train him then,” Qui-gon announced to the Jedi Masters around them. “I take Anakin as my padawan learner.” Anakin’s eyes widened, and hope flickered faintly in his watery blue eyes once more.

“An apprentice you have Qui-gon!” Master Yoda pointed out. “Impossible to take on a second!”

“The code forbids it.” Master Windu added decisively. Anakin lowered his head as hope faded again. Why does it seem that Master Windu doesn’t want me to be a Jedi? He must not like me. . .

“Obi-wan is ready,” Qui-gon persisted.

“I am ready to face the trials.” Anakin turned to see Obi-wan step forward before the council. His expression was brave, though he could tell the young knight was nervous; like himself.

“Our own counsel we will keep on who is ready,” Master Yoda replied, though not unkindly.

“He is headstrong,” Qui-gon reasoned, “and he has much to learn of the living force, but he is capable. There is little more that he can learn from me.”

Anakin watched as Master Yoda’s perceptive green eyes surveyed both Qui-gon and Obi-wan, until finally resting upon him. He strove to maintain eye-contact with the master, hoping to prove that he wasn’t afraid. Still watching him, Master Yoda sighed as if coming to a conclusion.

“Young Skywalker’s fate will be decided later.”

“Now is not the time for this,” Master Windu spoke. “The senate is voting for a new Supreme Chancellor and Queen Amidala is returning home, which will put pressure on the Federation and could widen the confrontation.”

“And draw out the Queen’s attacker,” added the aged Master Ki-Adi-Mundi.

Anakin was unsure of what they were discussing. In fact, he was not even reflecting on the subject. He could feel the suspicious stares from everyone around him. They feared him; that much he could tell. But why? What did I do to upset them? Qui-gon told me I was to be a Jedi. . . These confusing thoughts tumbled through his head with worry. This was not what he had expected to happen. Shame caused a crimson flush to creep up his neck when he recalled telling Padmé of his awaiting journey to the Jedi Temple for his training. She’d looked so proud and happy for him. Would she see him as a failure now?

“Go with the Queen to Naboo and discover the identity of this dark warrior,” he could hear Master Windu saying. “This is the clue we need to unravel the mystery of the Sith.”

“May the force be with you,” Master Yoda inclined his head to them in farewell. Anakin nodded in return and followed Qui-gon and Obi-wan out of the council chamber, his heart breaking all the while. What will happen to me now?

Qui-gon and Obi-wan walked slightly ahead of Anakin as they neared the elevator. He felt unwanted suddenly, and kept waiting for Qui-gon to tell him it would be best if he returned to Tatooine. Gazing forward, he saw Obi-wan glance over his shoulder at him. The young knight did not smile encouragingly at him or even nod kindly. Where was the concerned Jedi that had comforted him the night before? Fine, let him hate me too. . .

The elevator hummed evenly as it brought them down to the main floor of the temple. Still, neither Jedi spoke to him. He chanced a quick glance at Qui-gon to see him staring intently forward, as if he were deep in thought. Turning to Obi-wan, he saw the apprentice looking downward and despondent. The elevator doors whisked open quickly and Qui-gon led them out into the large atrium. Anakin could not keep his eyes from wandering. The temple was so. . .huge! And this was only the main hall! To his left, large staircases led into numerous chambers. Solemn faced Jedi strode purposefully across the hall, a few accompanied by their padawns. Glancing to the right, Anakin saw a group of children in light tunics being instructed by a Jedi Mistress not to run in the hall. All of them would be apprentices soon. A sharp twist of jealousy surged through Anakin as he observed them. It wasn’t fair. What made them of greater worth than him?

As they exited the temple into the cool night air, he reflected that he’d entered the temple earlier with such eager anticipation. He left it with a heavy heart. The two Jedi and young boy stood on the entrance platform, waiting for their transport to arrive. A light breeze caused the knight’s cloaks to flutter behind them. Anakin looked up to see Qui-gon and Obi-wan begin to converse with each other quietly. It seemed as though the younger knight was angry whilst Qui-gon strove to make peace with him.

“Couldn’t you have. . .?” Obi-wan’s inquisitive voice was barely audible.

“It was not my intent to. . .” Qui-gon replied almost crossly. Anakin could only hear every other word of the hushed quarrel.

After a few moments, their transport craft landed before them on the platform and the two knights halted their argument abruptly.

“Come, Anakin,” Qui-gon turned to beckon him. It was the first time the knight had acknowledged him since the council meeting.

As they entered the small transport ship that would take them to Queen Amidala’s private landing platform, Qui-gon motioned Anakin to sit beside him. Maybe he doesn’t hate me. Obi-wan sat across from him, gazing sullenly out of the window. Anakin stared at his light eyes which were somewhat darkened with emotion. Of a sudden, they shifted to meet his gaze. The friendliness was absent. The young Jedi swiftly looked away; away from Anakin. Anakin strove to decipher his thoughts. What was wrong? Suddenly, Anakin understood Obi-wan’s expression. . .jealousy.
