Chapter 2 – Factor #2: Sexiness during Exertion
Reed had been neglecting exercising and avoiding walking past the crude haphazard home gym that had been put together in one of the spare bedrooms. Instead he had been investing his time and energy in researching a similar solar storm to the one that had caused them to mutate in the first place. The storm was going to be passing Earth but no where near as close as the first storm.
“The problem is how am I going to get a close enough view to be able to study it properly,” Reed apprehensively worried to himself, ‘ More magnification.’
Reed scurried around the cluttered lab looking through diagrams and notes.
‘Yes, more magnification would make the storm visible enough for me to aptly study it.’ Reed grinned at his brilliant solution. But his grin quickly faded into a thoughtful frown.
“Where am I going to get the parts I need to make such a monstrous telescope.” Reed sat at his desk seemingly staring off into space. His lips would sometimes move as if he was talking but no sound would come out.
Sue looked at her former lover in bored exasperation and sighed. She cleared her throat noisily from the doorway, but there was no acknowledgment of the sound by Reed. She coughed a bit louder than last time, but to her astonishment (and annoyance) there was still no response from Reed.
“Good Lord,” she said under her breath. She walked up to where she was standing directly behind Reed and coughed and cleared her throat as loud as she could.
Reed seemed to jump out of his reverie and looked with concerned eyes at Sue.
“Are you alright Sue?” he said worriedly.
“Come here and sit down, quickly.” Reed sputtered out anxiously as he removed things from one of the lab tables and felt Sue’s forehead.
“Hmm, you don’t feel feverish yet, but that cough you have sounds terrible! Here,” he offered as he stuck a thermometer in her mouth and began to search for more medical equipment.
“Will you please stop it!” she yelled yanking the thermometer out of her mouth, “It was a fake cough! To get your attention.”
Now that Reed took a closer look at her, Sue did look extremely pissed off.
“Now, didn’t I tell you, like, four hours ago that you needed to take a break and you really need to go work out. It’s been almost a month since I’ve seen you take one step into that gym!”
“… but… I...”
“Go!” Sue yelled firmly.
“… break through… here… and…”
“NOW!” Sue growled. Reed could feel her force shield pushing him towards the door and figured that it would probably be a good time to just do what Sue wanted. He nodded, resigning to his work out fate.
Reed sulkily went back to his room and changed into his navy blue stretchable uniform and then headed down the hall into their “gym”. He slowly trudged over to the stationary bike and set the program for 30 minutes… he really didn’t want to do this “work out thing” at all.
‘I suppose I was about halfway through my workout when incident 2 occurred,’ Reed recalled, ‘Hmm… maybe Johnny did set this whole thing up.’
Reed looked down at the accused Johnny whose head was resting on his chest. Johnny’s mouth was slightly parted and he was lightly snoring.
‘Hmm… on second thought… no.’
Reed was starting to get extremely bored. He hated this stupid cycling but going nowhere.
‘Nothing to do… nothing to occupy the time… nothing to even really look at… oh!’
Johnny, this time clad in his own blue jumpsuit, came strolling in and started stretching. Reed raised an eyebrow as he watched Johnny with a little more interest then he should have had.
‘What the,’ Reed snapped out of his trance and mentally slapped himself, ‘I should not be watching him stretch. And I should definitely not be finding him attractive. Attractive?! Who said anything about finding Johnny attractive? Oh, stop lying to yourself Re...’
“So, are you actually planning to pedal at all… or are you just gonna sit on it and call it exercise?” Johnny asked with a mocking smirk.
Reed opened his mouth as if to answer and then closed it with a confused look plastered on his face.
“What?” Reed replied indignantly.
Johnny made a face like he was trying not to laugh then pointed at the bike and made a peddling motion with his hands. Johnny’s gesture knocked the confusion out of Reed and he looked down at the cycle. The display was blinking brightly, warning him that he had slowed down too much and that he needed to increase his speed or the program would terminate.
“Oh!” Reed said in surprise when he noticed that he had, sometime during his thoughts, ceased to pedal. Reed looked up at Johnny, faked a laugh and then resumed his pedaling.
Johnny shook his head half in amusement and half in disbelief.
“Sometimes I wonder if that cloud messed up something in your head, old man,” Johnny stated from the squat machine.
“No, I’m fine. Just,” Reed scrambled for a good excuse to his daydreaming, “err, just tired, you know?”
Reed received no response; just a raised eyebrow and a disbelieving smirk.
Reed went back to cycling up and down imaginary programmed hills and inclines, but no matter how much he exerted himself peddling he couldn’t keep his eyes and mind off his teammate. He scrutinized the way the muscle in Johnny’s inner thigh bulged and strained when he squatted. He watched, mesmerized, as Johnny’s more than impressive muscles curved and became taut under the weight he was lifting.
“Dude,” Johnny grunted putting the weight back on the pegs, “Your machine thingy is beeping.”
“You’re hot,” Reed blurted out.
“Look, the beeping is really… whoa! What?” Johnny stammered as what Reed had said finally hit him.
“Your temperature… seems high,” Reed barely squeaked out as crimson spread over his face.
“Nah, I’m okay,” Johnny said slowly as he eyed Reed suspiciously, “Though, you’re right. My temperature does go way up when I start working out. Yah know, maybe you could, I dunno, make something that would… make it easier to control my temperature,” Johnny rambled having completely dismissed the idea that Reed had just hit on him, although it was an amusing thought.
Reed on the other hand was glowing red from the tips of his ears all the way down his neck. Unconsciously, Reed used his elasticity to slowly shrink his neck and head into his shirt… resembling a turtle.
“Umm, k, uh, nevermind,” Johnny stammered, surprised at Reed’s odd behavior, “I mean I’m getting better at controlling it… um, no need to stress yourself out.”
“I… have… an… experiment. A… timed experiment… that I… gonna-go-check-have-to-go!” Reed blurted out as he raced out of the gym.
“… weird guy, man… weird guy,” Johnny shook his head as he walked over to turn Reed’s cycle alarm off.
