"Gabriel?"
"Hmm?" He could feel his lover's body against his own. Their legs entangled and arms wound around each other.
"What is between life and death?" Gabriel opened his eyes and tried to focus them on Vlad, it wasn't working very well.
"Life and death?" His voice was thick with weariness, his eyes heavy with sleep. "Uh…un-life and un-death? I don't know the middle ground." He heard the sheets rustle and cracked opened his eyes, funny, he hadn't realized they had closed.
"I want to know." Gabriel sighed and propped himself up. Obviously Vlad wasn't going to let him sleep.
"No you don't. It's probably some painful form of living yet non-living. Middle grounds, buffer zones, whatever you want to call them, are never pleasant." Vlad grimaced and plopped down against the silk sheets and pillows, Gabriel followed.
"Buffer zones are an ass." He managed to get out in between yawns. Gabriel mumbled something that might have been an agreement, Vlad couldn't tell.
Silence descended on the two and Gabriel found himself on the verge of sleep. His body was exhausted as was his mind, but something was nagging him. Something he remembered about the middle of life and death, something he couldn't quite put his finger on. Sleep soon claimed him and that night he dreamed, he dreamed of a world that was gray and of black haired man who drank blood and he knew that this was it, this was middle ground. But when he woke, he remembered nothing.
