Chapter Two

Dark energies flowed about the room, filling it with an almost tangible black mist. Jason and Onna sat in the middle of the meditation room of their home, a modest space of comfortable seating and sparse illumination. The room would have more light, save for a couple candles burning in the corners and the small amount of sunlight that was allowed to filter in, but Jason thought it easier to meditate without the distractions of light on your eyelids.

“Good,” Jason said softly, reaching out with his feelings and noticing that Onna’s mind was focused and her energy was flowing about her well. “You’re doing good, Onna. But, I shouldn’t talk, because it can distract you. Of course, you should be able to shut out distractions, so I could tell you that joke about the Wookie walking into the bar on Ryloth without you getting pissed at me for it. So, here goes. A Wookie walks into a bar on Ryloth, and is instantly confronted by the barkeep. Well-“ Jason was cut off abruptly as Onna’s leg shot out and she kicked him in the shin.

“Stop it,” was all she said before concentrating her mind again.

“Sure,” he replied, chuckling as he rubbed at his leg. “But, concentrate, Onna,” he continued, his voice barely above a whisper. “Feel the energy around you. Touch every chakra in your body...feel the Force swirling around and penetrating every one of those energy centers. Good... Now, reach out with your consciousness, open that third eye, and sense me. See me as I am, sitting before you, in your mind’s eye.”

When he felt her concentration settle on him, he allowed a brief smirk to cross his lips. “There you go, girl. Now, reach even further...see through my clothes and skin, peer into my internal workings. Watch my heart as it beats...hear it. Feel it. Listen to the sounds my lungs make as I breath. Even pay attention to the noise my muscles make as they tense and relax. Good...now, relax. Bring your attention back within yourself, take a deep breath, and open your eyes. We’re done for now.”

Many of Jason’s contemporaries questioned his meditation techniques. He practiced a more relaxed, peaceful, Jedi-like method, instead of the hate- and anger-filled way of the Dark Jedi. Each time he was questioned about it, he would tell the individual that he thought both techniques were valid, but he preferred the quieter way. Unlike his comrades, Jason wasn’t hellbent on the destruction of a people or the galaxy. The only reason that he was a Dark Jedi was that it felt more...true, to him.

Getting off the floor, Jason offered a hand to Onna. “Let’s go into town,” he said.

“Why?” Onna asked, rising to her feet with Jason’s assistance.

“Well, it gets us out of the house, and it’ll let you practice your sensing skills in a more practical situation.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Onna said, smiling up at Jason as she swept a bit of sweat off her brow.

“Indeed it does,” he replied, smiling back. “Come on, let’s get changed into something a little more town-worthy.”

****----****----****----****

Half an hour later, Jason and Onna were wandering down a street in the nearby city. It was bustling with activity, with many people darting in and out of stores and going on with their busy lives. Even though the couple walked down the center of the active sidewalk, everyone gave them a wide berth, recognizing them as being Dark Jedi of the Brotherhood. It wasn’t too hard to tell what they were, for Jason had neglected to don his usual jacket or heavy coat, and his lightsaber was displayed for the whole galaxy to see.

Not that he really cared if anyone knew he was a Dark Jedi: this was Brotherhood-controlled space, first and foremost, and no one would dare tangle with him. Secondly, Jason and Onna lived in the mountains, and would come down to this city quite often. Coming to get supplies, buy new clothing, and just to get out of the house. People knew who they were, and they even had many friends in the city. The threat of confrontation was far from either of their minds.

“Oh, that is so beautiful!” Onna exclaimed, running up to a jewelry shop window. Peering in she made all sorts of appreciative noises, looking at all the rings and necklaces. Taking a quick glance into the window, Jason gave an acknowledging grunt and kept walking. He made only a couple more steps before Onna’s hand clamped itself around his forearm, halting his forward progress.

“Look at that, Jason! It’s so lovely!” she said, pointing at an ornate necklace. It was made almost entirely of diamonds, and sparkled like a newborn star.

“Yeah, that’s quite, uh...sparkly,” Jason replied, not particularly interested in it, but knowing that she’d want him to buy it for her. His suspicion was soon realized as Onna, still holding on to his arm, turned and pulled him into the shop.

“Ah, welcome!” the owner of the shop said as the couple entered the store, accompanied by a cheerful ringing noise made by the sensor that alerted the staff to arriving customers. The man was aged, probably in his middle sixties, with black hair that was starting to grey at the sides. He kept a well manicured beard, and wore a well appointed suit. It didn’t take a genius to know that this man obviously had money.

“Hello,” Jason responded, giving a courteous nod and grin towards the owner.

“What can I do for you two?” the man asked, smiling.

“Just looking around,” Onna said, getting the phrase out just as Jason was opening his mouth to say the same thing.

“Well, was there anything in particular you were ‘looking around’ for?”

“Well, my lovely girlfriend here saw one of your quite ornate necklaces in the window, and just had to come in and see what else you had.”

“Ah, I believe I know which one you’re talking about.” The owner then crossed the floor behind the display case where he stood, digging into his blazer pocket and producing a set of keys. Reaching the case that looked out onto the street, he unlocked it, reached in, and pulled out the necklace that Onna had eyed. As he came back to the counter, her eyes grew at least two sizes and started to sparkle as brightly as the necklace. “Go ahead, try it on.”

Onna took it from him, grinning all over herself as she held it in her hands and looked it over.

“It’s gorgeous,” she said as she undid the tiny clasp that held the two ends together. Reaching behind her neck, she went to clip it back together, but was interrupted as Jason’s fingers took hold of it.

“Here, allow me,” he said, bending over to kiss her shoulder quickly. Onna smiled back at him as he clipped the necklace together and pulled her hair out from underneath it. In the meantime, the owner had grabbed a mirror that was sitting nearby on the counter, and held it up for Onna to look in.

“It’s a very beautiful peace,” he said. “Made out of diamonds from an exclusive mine on Ysgard, they are proprietary this sector controlled by Clan Plagueis. In the rest of the galaxy, and even in other sectors controlled by the rest of the Brotherhood, these aren’t available but on the black market. While they are fairly common here in Plagueis space, in other sectors, they can’t be found, and are thus quite rare.”

“Wow,” Jason stated, his eyes widening slightly. “So, how much do these super rare diamonds cost?”

“For a member of Clan Plagueis, they cost nothing,” the man replied with a smile.

“How’d you know I’m in Plagueis?” Jason asked, slightly concerned.

“It’s quite simple: you bear a lightsaber, something that only students of the Force wear. A Light Jedi hasn’t set foot on a planet in this system since before Plagueis moved in. And it’s almost impossible to find someone from one of the other Clans here. So, I simply did some basic arithmetic, and came to a conclusion.”

“Wow, sounds like you’ve done your homework,” Onna said, taking a quick glance back in the mirror. “But, I’d feel bad if I just took this from you.”

“Oh, don’t worry about it,” the man said, waving a hand dismissivly. “I get them fairly cheap, being the largest dealer of these diamonds in this part of the galaxy. And besides, you two help keep this planet safe, so it’s the least I could do.”

“Wow...well, thank you.”

“No, thank you. Now, you two go out and enjoy the rest of this great autumn day.”

Jason and Onna left, thanking the man again and bidding him a fair day. They started walking back down the sidewalk, and Jason noted that the sun was just beginning to fall behind the mountains.

“Only thing I don’t like about this place, is that the days are shorter than usual,” he commented, wrapping an arm around Onna’s waist.

“Yeah, I know what you mean,” she responded, leaning into the side of Jason’s torso and smiling. “Too damned short. It makes it seem like your time away from the Brotherhood goes that much quicker.”

“Yeah, I know, hon. I don’t like it either. But, it’s up to us to enjoy what time we do have and make the most of it, right?”

“Yep!” She smiled broadly up at him, then stood on the ends of her toes and planted a heavy kiss upon his lips. Her Krath boyfriend returned the smile and the kiss, but did it much more force, stopping in the middle of the sidewalk and putting a hand behind her head. Their embrace lingered for several moments, their tongues dancing within each other’s mouth. Finally, they drew apart, and smiled at one another again.

“Come on, let’s go home,” Onna said, putting her arm around Jason and turning back to head towards their house.

Suddenly, Jason felt a fiercely cold chill run up his spine, accompanied by a warning from the Force. Onna sensed the sudden tensing of his posture and stopped, looking about and reaching out with her fledgling Force powers.

In an instant, Jason was suddenly spinning and drawing his lightsaber. Then, in the same movement, she was being pushed by him into a small nook in the wall of the building they were next to. It was at this time, as she was sailing towards the wall, that she saw the reason that he had turned. Before him was a humanoid figure that was even larger than he, swathed in billowing robes as black as Darth Vader’s lungs.

Everything seemed to slow for Onna, watching as this specter-like man withdrew his own lightsaber and, without switching on the blade, ducked beneath Jason’s lateral strike and smashed the pommel into the side of the Corellian’s head. Jason spun to his right, dropping straight to the ground, unconscious.

Onna was drawing breath to scream towards Jason, when, much to her surprise, their assailant was upon her, dropping her into blackness with a viscous blow to the side of her neck. The last image she saw before hitting the pavement was Jason, out cold and bleeding from his ear.

Then, everything was dark...
