Ch 2: If I Fell
Chapter Two: If I Fell
(The song title is from the Beatles, but Michael Jackson probably owns it.)
They worked in silence for half an hour, each stealing glances at the other when they thought it safe. Finally, the padawan broke the silence, clearing his throat. “Master Silar’rian…” he began, blushing.
She chuckled. “No need to be so formal, this isn’t a lesson. Call me Kayla, please.”
He smiled sheepishly and the blush deepened as a brief image of lessons he’d like to learn from her flashed through his thoughts. “Sorry. Kayla, then. It looks like there may be some duplicates in here; some of these reports have the same dates. ”
“Let me see them.” She reached for the datacards as he moved to hand them to her, and their hands brushed together. The cards fell to the office floor in disarray. They both made a grab for the falling papers and Kayla, predictably, fell forwards out of her chair. She yelped as she pitched forward, but before she could stop her fall, strong hands caught her and spared her an collision with the floor; instead, the impact felt as if it was reverberating through her body. She looked up at him and her grey eyes met his, blue-green and full of a mix of humor, concern and desire.
“Are you ok?” His voice came out as a husky whisper. She was close enough that he could smell her perfume, Terran ambergris. Before he could stop himself, he reached for her and stroked her cheek softly. She closed her eyes and shivered. Dear Force, he was picking up strong waves of desire from her! Beyond his wildest hopes, she was indeed interested, to put it mildly, in him. His heartbeat echoing in his ears, he leaned forward and cupped her chin in his hand, and brushed his lips against hers. He went to move away, but she reached for him and pulled him in for another kiss, deeper this time. Unfortunately, this also served to pull him off balance, as he’d been leaning over to catch her, and now it was his turn to fall. Laughing as she caught him, Kayla pulled him closer to her and resumed the kiss. Soon, though, their ardor dissolved into mutual laughter at their predicament.
“I see my clumsiness is contagious,” she chuckled.
“Well, we’ve both obviously fallen for each other,” he grinned, and had to dodge the playful swipe she aimed at him for his pun. He leaned towards her and kissed her again, and thankfully there was no further risk of falling as neither held onto anything but each other.
He parted her lips with a flick of his tongue, and felt hers brush his as they kissed. Sighing, he twined the bright auburn curls of her hair through his fingers. All too soon, she pulled back from the kiss.
“You realize we’re sitting on the floor of my office, with the door wide open. Anyone could walk by and see us.” She got to her feet and smoothed her tunic.
He rose as well and glanced towards the open door. “We could close it.”
She laughed. “I suppose we could. But I really am starving, why don’t we do what we planned and go grab some dinner?”
“Um, ok. What about after dinner?” he shifted nervously on his feet, suddenly shy again.
“We’ll see," she replied with a mischievous wink. He grinned and followed her out the door.
“And remember, dinner is on Qui-Gon, although I suppose we really owe him a thank you.” She leaned forward and kissed him again in the hallway, quickly.
Obi-wan reached for her hand and they walked out into the Coruscant night.
