Chapter 22 - Quick Thinking

By mid-morning they were well on their way and approaching the surrounding rock belt that took out any ships unaware of them. Oria guided the Interceptor lightly towards the protruding stones; Anna-Maria appeared at her side with a frown towards the prow.

“Do you want someone at the prow to shout warnings?” Oria shook her head her eyes never leaving the distance as she plotted her course carefully allowing for the slightly smaller ship.

“I know the path like the back of my hand. It will not be necessary.” Anna-Maria looked doubtful but nodded and walked down to the deck.

“Dead men tell no tales.” Cottons’ parrot cried out mournfully from the ships’ main yard. They drifted into the first rings of rocks; the crew stopped what they were doing and gazed over the side of the ship into the clear water. The silhouettes of ages lost battleships and exploration ships echoed up to them, occasionally the fin of a shark would appear for a few seconds as it rode the water rising up from under the ship. Gibbs stood next to Will and gazed down worriedly.

“Puts a chill in the bones how many honest sailors have been claimed by this passage.” Will glanced at him and then back down at the water where a silhouette of a shark had just appeared, “They were guided by men… we’ve got a woman. We’re doomed.” Jack re-appeared at that point and heard the comment with a scowl.

“Oi, there will be no insulting Oria’s ability to sail. She’s a damn good sailor, one of the best I’ve come across.” The ship lurched suddenly and was tossed against a rock as a whale gave a mournful cry and kept on swimming; Gibbs looked up and gave a shout as a pile of rocks began to roll down. Oria glanced up at the tumbling stones her mind running quickly through plan after plan each less plausible than the first.

“Boom’s crossing, get out of the way.” Oria cried out suddenly as she twisted the wheel sharply. The rear boom swung across and the boulders bounced into the sail and rolled down into the ocean with a thunderous echoing. Oria watched as the last lump of rock rolled down the sail and sighed with relief before bringing the boom back around to where it had rested before. Gibbs stared up at her.

“She’s as crazy as you Jack; she could have torn a sail, snapped the boom or knocked someone’s head off.” Jack grinned up at where she was stood.

“Aye, crazy as me. She still saved your skin, the crews’ skin and the ship. Best start respecting that craziness mate; you owe your life to it.” He strode up to the helm continuing the grin proudly, Anna-Maria and a couple of the other pirates were congratulating her on the quick thinking, “Aye, good thought, good plan.” She stepped aside respectfully leaving one hand on the wheel to keep it steady.

“All yours Captain.” He glanced ahead; they had just cleared the rocky field, he grinned and wrapped his hands around the wheel lovingly as Oria stepped away. Making her way down to the deck she checked all the ropes over. Will watched her for a few seconds as Gibbs dragged a barrel over and sat on it with a sigh. His gaze turned to Jack, who was stood at the helm regarding his compass, Cotton was gazing over his shoulder not bothering to pretend to look at anything else. Jack flicked his eyes between the horizon, the compass and Cotton several times before flicking the compass shut and glaring at him till he shrugged and left. Will leaned towards Gibbs conspiratorially.

:/

“He roped a couple of sea turtles?” Gibbs nodded.

“Aye, sea turtles.” Will leaned forwards keeping the smirk from his face.

“What did he use for rope?” Gibbs paused and looked slightly deflated, heavy footsteps heralded Jacks’ arrival as he studied Will intently. The boy was definitely too curious for his own good he decided.

“Human hair… From my back. Let go of the anchor.” Oria pushed the bar and they watched as the anchor clattered down the side of the ship and into the water. Jack nodded, “Young Mr Turner and I are to go ashore.” Oria frowned at him and strode down the ship.

“Are you sure that it is wise to go into a cave full of blood thirsty pirates with only each other for back up?” Jack placed an arm around her shoulders and led her away.

“I need you to stay here to keep an eye on my Pearl and Sara and get us away sharpish when me, the boy and his bonny lass return.” She glared at him and brushed his arm from her shoulders.

“That’s a pathetic excuse Jack and I’m still coming with you.” He glared at her.

“You are not coming. I am not about to risk it, not with Barbossa.” He noticed the dangerous glint in her eyes as she stepped backwards away from him.

“You are not leaving me here to baby-sit Jack. There’s a whole crew to look after Sara and the ship.” Jack nodded; he thought this would be the reason for the raised hackles and bared teeth, warnings of a storm brewing.

“Look, it’s not like that at all.” Oria glared at him.

“You want to fight over it Jack? I’m not backing down; you are not going over there with only the lad to protect your back and his back you. It’s foolish. Besides, I have as much right as you to witness Barbossas’ death.” He met her gaze quietly, sighed and nodded. She wasn’t about to back down now not with that glint in her eye.

“Fine, come on then.” She followed him over to the boat, paused and turned back to get her belt of weaponry.

“Captain, what if the worst should happen?” Gibbs called out, Jack paused and glanced down.

“Keep to the code.” Gibbs nodded.

“Aye, the code.” Jack motioned for them to lower the boat.

“What about Oria?” Will stared at him accusingly, Jack waved a hand absently.

“She’ll make her own way down.” Will glanced up as Jack unfastened both ropes, one was retracted immediately the second suddenly twitched and Oria skidded down it into the boat lightly with a grin at Wills’ surprised look.
