Chapter One: Can’t breathe

Liljana left the hotel room in high spirits, on course for the local grocery store to buy some authentic Mexican ingredients with which to make some tacos for dinner. She filled her basket with fresh vegetables, meat, sauce and taco shells and was just browsing the isle for desserts when she heard the little boy’s voice from yesterday in the bar.
Liljana stood on tiptoes trying to see over into the next isle. She couldn’t see anything, ‘Well of course you won’t be able to see anything if the boy is only four feet tall, you idiot.’ She said to herself, rolling her eyes. Liljana walked to the end of the isle and peeked her head around the side. There stood the boy talking animatedly to a man who was facing the opposite way, a man whose dark hair fell over his shoulders. Liljana felt a shudder run through her body and even before he turned around, knew who he was. Her hand went slack and she dropped her basket of shopping to the floor. The man spun around but before he got a chance to see her, she had jumped back into the other isle. Liljana held her breath, her eyes shut tight for a few moments. ‘Its not him. Its not him. Its impossible. It can’t be. Get a grip. There’s no way it could be him.’
She opened her eyes and slowly leant around the isle again. The boy stood there on his own, looking at the different packets of rice. Her breath left her body in a huge sigh of relief. ‘I must be seeing things’ she turned around and started picking up the things that fell from her basket.

“You okay, Lil? You’ve been staring at your tacos for the past fifteen minutes.”

“Of course. I’m just thinking about things.”

“What type of things? Anything I can help with?’

“No. Just thought I recognised someone earlier. But I was being stupid. There was no way it could have been who I thought it was.”

“Anyone I know?” Liljana shifted uncomfortably,

“…I don’t think so.”

The next day Sebastian insisted on him and Liljana taking a walk around the town where they were staying. They visited the local church and wandered for hours around the cobbled and dusty streets, taking photos to show their family and friends.

Later that day, Liljana went back into the town with her SLR camera and to a few picturesque places they had been to earlier because she had wanted to take some photos for her photography but hadn’t brought enough film.

She took a roll of film of the old dilapidated buildings on the outskirts of town, then walked further into the centre of the town and took a roll of all the Mexican locals, going about their daily business-making guitars, socialising and working. Liljana was really pleased with her photos and couldn’t wait to get them into the shop and get them developed, so she took them to the local grocery store where they advertised to develop photos in two days.

When she told Sebastian, he laughed, pulling her into a hug and said, “Aren’t we here to have a break from work?”

Liljana just shrugged and grinned.

When Liljana got her photos back, she flicked through them excitedly, in her mind immediately picking out the ones that would go in the gallery. She handed them to Sebastian who looked at them, impressed. “These are amazing, Lil! You really should put the prices for your photos up.” She blushed and indicated that he should keep looking at the photos. A few seconds later, Liljana noticed that Sebastian was frowning, looking closely at one of the photos.

“Seb?”

“Oh, its just this one guy stands out like a sore thumb amongst all the locals. I didn’t think there were hardly any tourists in this town.” He handed Liljana the photo and for a second she couldn’t see anything out of place. But there, in the middle of the photo, behind a group of people was the one person she thought she would never see again. Liljana dropped the photo to the floor and ran to the bathroom as fast as her legs would carry her, before dry retching into the sink, her eyes watering. She coughed and spluttered for a moment before Sebastian came running into the bathroom and pulled her into an embrace, stroking her hair softly, “Are you okay, Sweetie?”

“Yeah. Must have been something I ate.” She said roughly.
