Finding an Understanding

Chapter 1: Finding an understanding

Jack held the lad, having been too late to catch him before he hit the deck, he now cradled the boy to him, softly patting his cheeks, hoping to rouse him.

As the hazel brown eyes fluttered open he smiled, whispering softly, “Ahh, William, good to see you wake”

Will blushed, then, only then registering the fact that he was on the deck, on the floor, held by the elder pirate… He sprang up, whimpering and begging near automatically, moving to a corner.

As Jack followed him slowly, carefully, he sighed softly as he witnessed the youth rocking himself back and forth, stuck in between reality and memory. Reaching out and caressing his soft locks, he speaks softly, “William…you’re safe now, safe. Free”

The blacksmith looked up, nodding his head in slight acceptance, looking past the captain to the centre of the deck, “When do we come upon a port?”

Jack looked down, “Not for another week, I’m sorry Will”

Will nodded again, surprising both Jack and himself as he broke down into tears.

The elder pirate had watched the sudden outburst, and pulled the youth into his arms, holding him, but not confining him, as he cried out his sorrow.

When the blacksmith calmed down, another blush covered his cheeks, “I’m sorry Jack…I don’t know what just happened”

Jack smiled, nodding, “It’s alright, William”, smoothing the brown hair, “You can get past this, I know you can. Especially with the help of your bonnie lass”

Will laughed bitterly, “She’s no help… Her eyes… It tells the truth she doesn’t speak.. The loathing… disgust… All was for her… Disgust… Jack, she will not help. She said.. I have a week to ‘get over myself’, else.. she’ll go to Norrington… when we are back”

For a moment all was silent, but then, a steady line of curses fell from the pirate captain, “She does not deserve you, William. She’s got a pretty face to be sure, but she’s ugly inside.”

Will looked down, nodding, “I loved her… once… now, I’m not so sure”

Jack couldn’t help but smile at the admission, “Good lad”

Jack rose to his feet, then offered his hand to Will, “See… all that talk and the deck didn’t hurt you, come William, let’s find your life back”

Will smiled slightly, a true smile, nodding his head as he took Jack’s hand, “Thank you Jack”

The captain returned the smile, “You’re welcome William”

As Jack moved about the deck to the railing, “Come here”

As the youth joined him, Jack smiled, “The Pearl will never harm you, she cares for you truly. Touch her, you’ll know…”

As Will tentatively reached out, caressing the wooden railing he felt a shiver run down his spine, but a good one now, rather than the ones of fear, “Thank you for helping me”

Confident with his newfound discoveries, he looked at the captain, “Is there a room, or just a bed, that I could use? I really would rather not spend any more time in a room with Elizabeth, it just doesn’t work.”

Jack smiled, then pondered, “I’d offer you my cabin, but you’re not quite ready for that yet… Tell you what, I’ll set you up with a nice little something right here…How’s that?”

Will gave a small nod, then looked at the elder man, “Why are you not asleep?”

Jack looked at him, “I hardly sleep at all lad, plus, now that I have my precious Pearl back… I wish not to sleep”

Will nodded again, “Jack…?”

“Yes Will?”

“Why did they do… what they did? To me?”
