A New Beginning
As she gazed through the airplane window before take-off, Elyse Newton said goodbye to Washington DC where she had worked and lived for the past eight years. Her life had been filled with politicians, issues and government. Her career that once held so much promise was now over because she had fallen in love with the wrong man. A well-respected journalist for Newsweek Magazine should have known better than to fall for a married US Senator. Elyse did know better...but it did not stop her.
Elyse met the dashing senator during an interview she was conducting on the upcoming election. There had been an instant chemistry between them. Off the record they discussed his marital problems and her failed marriage. The senator explained that he and his wife were only staying together until the election. Once he was re-elected, he and his wife agreed they would part ways.
For the next three months the senator and Elyse had a very hot and very private affair, but not quite as private as they initially hoped. Elyse's assistant in an attempt to score points with the boss, informed him of the affair. Unfortunately for Elyse, her editor was the beloved golf partner of the senator's father-in-law. The employee was paid off, a public scandal was avoided, the senator was re-elected and his marriage remained in tact. Elyse lost her job with Newsweek and no one in Washington would hire her. Eight long years of clawing her way through the male-dominated world of Washington journalism and now there was nothing to show for it except a wall full of awards and a very broken heart.
Devastated, Elyse spent a month hardly getting out of bed. A well-timed visit from her best college buddy, Joe proved to be her salvation. Joe had started working at Rolling Stone Magazine at the same time Elyse joined Newsweek. With a few well-placed calls, Joe was able to arrange an interview for Elyse with his editor who jumped at the chance to hire her.
Rejuvenated and re-energized, Elyse sold her townhouse and her BMW sedan and bought a ticket for a one-way flight to L.A.
*****
As the aircraft made the ascent to the proper altitude, Elyse retrieved her Ipod, slipped on the earphones, closed her eyes and pondered her first assignment as a journalist for Rolling Stone. It was to be a fully involved cover story on Black Pearl, the popular rock group that had ruled the charts off and on for the past two decades. Black Pearl was about to be honored with induction to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. The job would require her to spend several weeks on tour with the band culminating with the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Gala. She was astounded and delighted at the amount of trust they had placed in her for this assignment. It was particularly exciting for Elyse because Black Pearl had been her favorite band when she was a teenager growing up in the Midwest. She felt a slight blush rush over her face as she recalled the silly crush she had on the band's hot lead singer all those years ago. It had been ages since she had thought about them. In Washington, everything was always so serious...not much time for fun. Elyse had neglected her playful side for far too long. It was now the time to enjoy life again. It was a new beginning.
These thoughts relaxed her as she listened to the alluring sound of Black Pearl. The seductive voice of Jack Sparrow gently lulled her into a deep, peaceful sleep.
