Chapter Two: We’re All Looking For Something
***

Ryan gulped as he looked at himself in the mirror. He was wearing what Troy had him wear last night. He had gotten so many new clothes he had no idea where to start. If he wore his old clothes Troy would be mad, but if he wore his new clothes Sharpay would freak out. But in the end, he figured he should at least try to wear the clothes Troy had picked out for him.

Ryan put on the pair of plaid shorts that made Troy jump him and a white t-shirt. Over the white t-shirt he put a light grey, sweatshirt with a hood. It was a thin, shirt like sweatshirt with a hood attached to it. He then went to the bathroom and put a little gel in his hair to make it look normal.

When he walked out of his room he bumped into Sharpay.

“RYAN!” She screamed, “What are you wearing?”

“Clothes,” Ryan said.

“Those aren’t your regular clothes,” Sharpay said. “Those are the clothes of the Wildcats!”

“Well,” Ryan said. “I’ve always been a Wildcat.”

He smiled and walked away. Sharpay followed.

“I will not drive you to school wearing those clothes,” Sharpay said.

“Okay,” Ryan said. “That’s why I have my own car.”

Ryan got into his blue convertible and sped off.

“UH!” Sharpay whined.

When Ryan arrived at school he was getting all kinds of looks. “Looking good,” was thrown out a few times as he walked to his locker. He paid no attention to them; he had no idea those comments were for him. He opened his locker for his books.

“Wow,” Troy said. “You are looking mighty good today.

Ryan turned around.

“Hey,” he said.

“Hey,” Troy said. “Nothing more than Hey for me? That hurts man.”

“Sorry,” Ryan said. “What should I say?”

“Hey hot stuff,” Troy joked. “No! Hey is fine. But you pull these clothes off well.”

“Sharpay flipped,” Ryan said.

“Who cares?” Troy said, “You have other friends. You made them over the summer remember? You just need to hang out with them. And me.”

“And you?” Ryan said, “Are you going to jump me again?”

“That all depends,” Troy said.

“On what?” Ryan asked.

“On if you want me to,” Troy grinned.

The bell rang.

“Gotta go to class,” Troy said. “Find me later.”

Troy winked at Ryan and walked away.

At lunch Ryan walked back up to the roof top garden hoping to find Troy. But, he wasn’t there. Ryan was alone. This wasn’t uncommon for him. He usually sat with his sister. She made him crazy. Ryan began eating his sandwich while he sat up on the bench.

“Hey,” Troy said. “I thought I’d find you up here.”

“Shouldn’t you be down with Gabriella?” Ryan asked.

“Probably,” Troy said taking a seat next to Ryan. “But I’d rather be up here with you.”

“Why?” Ryan asked.

“Ryan,” Troy said. “I’m not gay. I’m just into you. I don’t know why. Being around you takes me out of the norm and I want more of that.”

“You have a girlfriend,” Ryan sighed. “I’m sure now I can to since I dress like you.”

“But you don’t want one,” Troy said. “You want me?”

“Bingo,” Ryan sighed again. “But I don’t want you while you are with somebody. That’s just not right. So I’m going to have to end this before it goes any further.”

“Wait,” Troy said as Ryan got up to leave.

Ryan turned around.

“Gabriella and I aren’t together,” Troy said. “We broke up at the end of the school year because she had to move again.”

“What?” Ryan said, “I guess that’d explain why I haven’t seen her these past two days.”

“Her mom said she wouldn’t have to move until we graduated,” Troy said. “But they did. So we had to end it. That’s why I was up here yesterday. I was trying to figure out something to get my mind off of her.”

“And then I showed up,” Ryan said. “That’s why you took such an interest in the way I dress.”

“Kind of,” Troy sighed. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” Ryan said. “You helped me yesterday by sticking up to my sister for me. It helped me do it this morning.”

“Yeah,” Troy rubbed the back of his head. “Sorry for jumping you in the dressing room yesterday though. That was probably not the best idea.”

“You’re right,” Ryan said. “But it gave me the idea.”

Ryan pushed Troy down and pushed their lips together.

“Ryan,” Troy tried to say and Ryan slipped his tongue into Troy’s mouth. Ryan pulled off; he was still on top of Troy on the bench.

“What?” Ryan asked, breathing heavier than normal.

“We can’t do this up here,” Troy said. “Someone could catch us. We better watch out.”

“Go out with me,” Ryan said.

“Huh?” Troy said confused.

“Not like be my boyfriend,” Ryan said. “Go out with me. To dinner or the movies. On a date.”

“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea,” Troy said.

“Why not?” Ryan asked, “It’s not like we have to tell anyone. We can just say we’re hanging out for all I care. Come on. You owe me that at least.”

“How do I owe you that?” Troy asked.

“You made me want you,” Ryan said. “So let me have you?”

“Wow,” Troy said. “I never expected you to be the one to pursue. If it means that much to you then I’ll go out with you. To the movies. Tonight. At Eight. Sound good?”

“Sure does,” Ryan said.

Ryan kissed him.

“I told you,” Troy pulled back. “We can’t do that at school!”

Ryan laughed. So did Troy.

Troy got out of his beat up old truck and headed to the front of the movie theater. He ducked his head down as he entered the theater where Ryan was waiting.

“What are you doing?” Ryan laughed.

“Nothing,” Troy kept ducked.

“Are you trying to duck so people don’t see you?” Ryan frowned, “No one is going to know. We are just hanging out remember. Are you that afraid of people finding out?”

“I guess a little,” Troy said. “I don’t want people to think I’m gay.”

“No one is going to,” Ryan said. “Just relax. If you are so nervous people are more likely to think something is up.”

“You’re right,” Troy stood up full and let out a deep breath. “When did you get so smart?”

“Don’t flatter me,” Ryan teased. “Two please.”

“You’re paying?” Troy said, “I have my own money.”

“I got it,” Ryan said handing the clerk the money for the tickets. “Thank you.”

“Troy no worries,” Ryan said. “Just keep cool remember?”

“I’m paying for the candy,” with that Troy was at the counter getting some snacks.

“Let’s get to the movie,” Ryan said.

They, with the snacks and tickets, headed to the theater their movie was in.

“Let’s sit in the back,” Troy whispered. “No one will see us there.”

Troy and Ryan quickly headed up to the very back row of the theater. It was stadium seating so they were pretty high up. Around the time the lights started to dim Chad, Zeke, and Jason walked in.

“Oh shoot its Chad,” Troy covered his face.

“Troy,” Ryan whispered. “Just keep your cool. They won’t even see us.”

Chad, Zeke, and Jason sat down not even noticing Troy and Ryan way up in the back.

“Few,” Troy sighed. “Sorry. I’m just nervous.”

“Why do you care what everyone thinks?” Ryan asked, “You are so worried about what other people will think or say that you can’t be yourself.”

“How do you know?” Troy snapped. “Sorry. I know you’re right. I just hate hearing it.”

“Good,” Ryan laughed. “Now shut up. The movie is starting.”

Troy and Ryan began watching the movie. It was a chick flick. So that got Troy wondering why Chad, Zeke, and Jason had come to see it. He knew why he and Ryan had come to see it but why three guys. As the movie ended the two main characters began kissing. Ryan slipped his fingers in between Troy’s. Troy looked over confused, but Ryan was still watching the end of the movie.

“Ryan,” Troy whispered.

“Hm?” Ryan asked, still watching the ending.

“Look at me,” Troy said.

Ryan turned to look at him. Troy quickly forced his lips onto Ryan’s and then pulled away.

“What was that for?” Ryan asked.

“Just wanted to sneak one before the end of the movie,” Troy smiled.

“So here we are,” Ryan said.

Ryan had walked Troy to his car. There wasn’t anyone where Troy had parked.

“You okay Troy?” Ryan asked, “Did you have fun?”

“It was alright,” Troy said. “But you slipping your hand into mine. So assertive. Seriously, when did you get so forward?”

“Have you ever see me not be forward?” Ryan asked.

“Everyday when Sharpay is around,” Troy giggled. “But I guess you’re a lot different when she’s gone.”

“Guess we both have things that make us nervous,” Ryan said.

Troy grabbed Ryan by the shirt and pulled him close. He let go and slipped his arms around Ryan’s waist.

“I guess you have experience with dating,” Ryan said. “I don’t.”

“Dating?” Troy asked, “Is that what we are doing now?”

“Maybe,” Ryan said. “What do you think?”

“I think we can make it work,” Troy said. “Only if you kiss me.”

Ryan grinned and kissed Troy.

“So what does this make us?” Ryan asked.

“I guess,” Troy thought. “I guess you can say you’re my boyfriend. But you can only say that to me!”

“Of course,” Ryan smiled, kissing Troy again.

“I’d better get home,” Troy said. “Gotta get up early for morning work out.”

“Okay,” Ryan said.

Troy kissed Ryan. Ryan walked away. Troy got into his truck and drove home.
