Chapter Two: Slipping Away
***

“Let’s begin,” Ms. Darbus said clapping her hands, knocking her many bracelets together. “We will begin with our very first scene. Ryan, Troy, Gabriella please get ready.”

Troy sighed. Ryan was looking at him but wasn’t sure what to say to make him feel better. Gabriella stood there with her script in hand remembering she had done this before.

“Now begin,” Ms. Darbus said.

The three began rehearsing the first scene of the first act of the show they were the stars of. Sharpay at in the audience with her arms folded.

“I will get back at her,” she said to herself. “I should have this lead. And Troy should have Ryan’s part.”

***

Troy wiped his face off with a paper towel in the boys’ bathroom after rehearsal was over. He thought of the days when he knew what was going on in his life. The days before he met Gabriella and started doing musicals. He wouldn’t even be in this one if Ryan hadn’t guilt tripped him into it. Troy sighed and walked out of the bathroom and headed to the front entrance of the school.

“Troy,” Gabriella ran after him.

Troy turned around.

“Oh hey Gabby,” Troy said. “How’s it going?”

“What’s wrong Troy?” Gabriella asked, “You didn’t seem yourself at rehearsal.”

“Can I ever really be myself at a musical rehearsal?” Troy sighed, “I never wanted to do this musical, but Ryan asked me to. I did it for him. And now…”

“Now what?” Gabriella asked.

Troy looked down.

“Oh,” Gabriella made her connection. “You’re upset that Ryan and I kiss at the end of this show aren’t you?”

Troy nodded.

“But Troy,” Gabriella said. “It doesn’t mean anything. It’s a stage kiss between a gay boy and a girl. That has no meaning at all.”

“No,” Troy said. “What it is is my boyfriend and my ex-girlfriend kissing.”

“I know Troy,” Gabriella said. “But you can’t think of it that way. Ryan loves you. And is no where near interested in me. So why are you so worried?”

“I don’t know,” Troy said. “I better go home.”

Troy turned around and started for the door once again.

“Troy,” Ryan ran up from behind. Troy turned back around.

“Wait,” Ryan was breathing heavily. “Can I talk to you?”

Troy looked at Gabriella.

“Walk with me,” Troy said.

“Okay,” Ryan said walking next to Troy as they left the building.

The two walked down the sidewalk towards the parking lot where Troy’s truck was.

“Listen Troy,” Ryan said. “This isn’t working for me.”

“What isn’t?” Troy asked, “Are you breaking up with me?”

“No,” Ryan said. “I mean yes. I mean, well I don’t know Troy. I love you. I really do. We’ve been together for like three months?”

“Two and a half,” Troy said.

“Fine,” Ryan said. “Two and a half months. During like the first week you said you loved me. If you love me then why does a stage kiss matter to you?”

“How can I not be jealous Ry?” Troy asked, “The girl I used to love gets to kiss the boy I am in love with. I want to be the one who does it.”

“Well you can’t,” Ryan said. “But you have to get over it. Because at the end of the day I’m only going to mean my kisses with you.”

Troy looked to the ground.

“Can we pretend this never happened?” Troy asked, “Like I never got jealous?”

“Absolutely,” Ryan said. He looked both ways and then kissed Troy. “I love you remember? I don’t love her as anything more than a friend. You’re my guy.”

“And you’re mine,” Troy said. “I am sorry Ry. How can I make it up to you?”

“Hmm,” Ryan said. “You’ll do anything?”

“For you?” Troy said, “I would wear a dress. But please don’t make me do that.”

Ryan laughed, “Nah. I could never like you in women’s clothing. There is something I would like though.”

“What is it?” Troy looked excited, “I want to do it. Tell me.”

Ryan slid his hands down Troy’s sides and onto his hips.

“I want you,” Ryan said.

“Now?” Troy gulped.

“No not now,” Ryan laughed. “Soon. Our three month is coming up soon. I suppose you and I might be able to make that night really special.”

“Really?” Troy’s face brightened.

“Really really,” Ryan smiled and kissed Troy. “But we’re only going to make it to our three month if you stop being a jealous little kid and do the show.”

“You’re really going to make me do this show aren’t you?” Troy said.

“No,” Ryan said. “But whether or not you do this show, I’m still going to end up kissing Gabriella. So why not do it so I can sing with you?”

“I guess that’s fair enough,” Troy said.

The two kissed again.

Gabriella sighed as she walked home from school. She remembered the days when Troy would walk with her. She missed it.

“Hey Gabby,” Chad said.

Gabriella turned around. She frowned.

“Oh come on,” Chad said. “You can’t still hate me. Troy doesn’t anymore.”

“Sorry,” Gabriella said. “I guess if he is okay then I am. Or I’ll try to be.”

“Thanks,” Chad smiled. “So what’s wrong? You look really sad.”

“It’s nothing,” Gabriella said. “You wouldn’t care anyways.”

“Come on Gabby,” Chad said. “We’re friends. Or we were at least. I care about you.”

“I guess,” She said.

They continued walking again.

“I just,” Gabriella said. “I miss Troy. Being in the musical with him brings back the memories of last years musical and this summer.”

“Oh,” Chad said. “Yeah I can see that.”

“I thought we would be together forever,” she continued. “As lame as that is. I loved him. I still do even. I just wish he wasn’t with Ryan.”

“I know how you feel,” Chad said.

“No you don’t,” Gabriella snapped back. “Sorry. It’s just that you have Sharpay now. I still have no one.”

“I didn’t ever intend to start dating Sharpay,” Chad said. “She’s cute and all. But very controlling.”

“Sounds like you aren’t happy either,” Gabriella said.

“Not really,” Chad said. “But if I end it with her she’ll flip out.”

“It’s true,” Gabriella said. “Do you like someone else?”

“Yeah,” Chad said. “But I don’t want to talk about it right now.”

“Okay,” Gabriella said. “But that’s not fair. I just told you my issue. Now tell me something.”

“Fine,” Chad said. “I’m kind of jealous.”

“Oh who?” Gabriella asked.

“Of,” Chad paused. “Of Troy and Ryan.”

Gabriella stopped walking to think about what Chad just said.

“You like Troy too?” Gabriella’s eyes widened. “Are you gay too?”

“No,” Chad said. “It’s not Troy.”

“Ryan?” Gabriella asked.

Chad nodded, “Over the summer… Ryan and I kind of hooked up.”

Gabriella said nothing.

“After the baseball game,” Chad said. “It’s weird. I can’t really explain it or how it happened.”

“That’s why you switched clothes?” Gabriella made the connection. “Well maybe you should tell Ryan how you feel.”

“I could never do that to Troy,” Chad said. “Plus I can’t have everyone knowing I’m into guys too.”

“Troy doesn’t seem to care,” Gabriella said. “Listen Chad. You either need to tell Ryan how you feel or get over it. Either way you probably should get out of your relationship with Sharpay.”

“I guess so,” Chad said. “Can you not tell anyone what I told you?”

“I suppose not,” Gabriella said. “You’re lucky I’m not one to pull what you and Sharpay pulled a few months ago.”

Chad sighed.

“Well,” Gabriella said. “This is my house. So I guess I’ll talk to you later.”

Chad hugged Gabriella and then she went inside.

The next day at school Ryan and Troy met up on the roof as they usually did. Ryan kissed Troy. Troy kissed Ryan.

“Excited for rehearsal?” Ryan asked.

“I guess so,” Troy said.

“Be excited,” Ryan smiled. “So guess what?”

“What?” Troy asked.

“Mommy and Daddy are letting Shar and I choose where we want to go for our senior trips,” Ryan said.

Troy laughed.

“What?” Ryan asked.

“It’s cute that you call your parents Mommy and Daddy,” Troy laughed.

“Shut up,” Ryan hit Troy’s arm. “Anyways. We get to go on separate trips. And we each get to take a friend. Their treat.”

“Oh,” Troy smiled.

“I chose New Zealand,” Ryan said. “And, I want you to come with me.”

“Over Christmas break?” Troy asked.

“Yeah,” Ryan said. “We get to leave the 27th and we stay until the 3rd. That’s a whole week in New Zealand.”

“That’s sounds great,” Troy said. “I’ll ask my parents.”

“Great!” Ryan kissed Troy, “It will be the best time ever. A week away from the wildcats and the cooler weather. We can even surf.”

Troy giggled.

“Sharpay,” Chad said. “We need to talk.”

“You’re right,” Sharpay looked at him with a smile. “We do need to talk. About break.”

“What?” Chad said, “Break is not what I’m talking about.”

“I know sweetie,” Sharpay said. “It’s what I’m talking about. Mother and Father are letting Ry and I go on separate senior trips. And we each get to take a friend. I was thinking of going to Japan! Those Asian girls have the cutest style ever. I must get my hands on it.”

“You want to go to Japan to shop for your senior trip?” Chad asked, “Man I don’t even get to go on a senior trip.”

“Duh,” Sharpay said. “That’s why you’re coming to Japan with me.”

“What?” Chad asked, “Japan? Really?”

“Duh,” Sharpay repeated. “We get to take one friend. Since you’re my boo. I’m taking you!”

“Seriously,” Chad smiled.

“Yes,” Sharpay said. “What did you want to talk about?”

“Oh nothing,” Chad asked. “I just wanted to ask what you wanted for Christmas.”

“Oh I’ll let you know when I find it,” Sharpay asked.

“Okay,” Chad said.

“Kiss me you fool,” Sharpay smiled.

Chad leaned in and kissed her.

“Mom,” Troy said. “Dad. I have a question to ask you guys.”

“What’s that son?” Mr. Bolton asked sitting down at the dinner table with his family.

“So my um,” Troy stopped. “My friend Ryan is going to New Zealand for his senior trip.”

“That Evans kid?” Mrs. Bolton asked, “He’s nice.”

“Yeah,” Troy said. “He said his parents are letting him take a friend on his senior trip. He invited me to go with him.”

“Did he?” Coach Bolton asked, “Well honey, what do you think?”

“I don’t see why not,” Mrs. Bolton said. “When do you leave?”

“The morning of the 27th,” Troy said.

“Sure then,” Coach Bolton said. “And then it would only be fair for you to take him on yours over Spring Break.”

“Wait,” Troy grinned. “I’m going on a senior trip?”

“Yes,” Mrs. Bolton smiled. “We were going to tell you on Christmas. But I guess now is just as good. We booked a cruise through the Bahamas for your senior trip.”

“Man that is so cool,” Troy smiled brightly. “I love you guys.”

“Alright,” Coach Bolton said. “Alright. It’s dinner time now. Let’s eat.”

Mrs. Bolton got up and served her macaroni and cheese to her family. Troy happily ate his mother’s food. Once dinner was up he called Ryan and told him about the cruise and how he was going to go to New Zealand with him. Troy laid on his stomach on his bed talking to Ryan on the phone for nearly and hour. Then he started doing his homework. After a few hours, he was asleep. His mother tucked him in.

“Goodnight,” she whispered.

His phone was lying next to him. She picked it up. The screen was bright reading “New Text Message” on it. She pushed the button. The text was from Ryan. It read:

Sleep tight Troy. I love you…
