Leave Us Alone
Chapter 2
Eleanor's little boy Elijah played happily with his Spiderman figures on his bedroom floor. Today was Eleanor's day off, so she and Elijah were going to be spending some quality time together. She had promised him a trip to the park, and the sun was shining.
Elijah was a handsome boy, with curly dark blonde hair and deep brown eyes, like his father. His father didn't know the boy, and had never met him. Eleanor had her reasons for that, as the boy's father wasn't a nice man.
Gathering up some toys from her bedroom floor, she couldn't help but let her mind wander back to her brief encounter with The Joker yesterday. Her thoughts were full of questions. Why had he come to see her, so randomly, after five years? Why was he so interested in her after all this time? Why did he say he would "be back"? What was his reasoning?
But The Joker didn't live by rules or understanding. Eleanor knew this. Sometimes he had no reasoning. Sometimes he just "did things" because he could.
"I won't let him get to me." she figured, watching her son playing in his bedroom. "I can't. I won't let him get to us."
It was important to Eleanor that the child was kept out of anything concerning The Joker. She was still pissed off with herself for mentioning to The Joker that she had a child. There was no need for him to know, but her tongue had slipped and now she really regretted it. She hoped, that the next time The Joker appeared - wherever and whenever that would be - that he wouldn't even think about her child, or maybe he would've forgotten. The Joker was so ruthless that no-one could comprehend what he was capable of doing next. The thought of harming a child for kicks surely wouldn't have been alien to him.
Maybe she was over thinking about things. After all, it had been one very brief, very random encounter with The Joker the day before. He hadn't been unpleasant to her, let alone threatening. But it was the not knowing about his real reason for visiting her, which had unsettled Eleanor. It was the fact that he hadn't filled in the blanks, left her guessing. This was very much The Joker's style, keeping people on edge. This was the world she had turned her back on, five years ago. She didn't want to become a part of it again. She was determined not to let The Joker play any mind games with her this time, if that was going to be his plan.
Eleanor drove to the park with Elijah, and watched as he climbed the steps to the slide and slid down fast. He giggled happily to himself.
"Mommy, look at meeeee!" he called out to her, climbing back up the steps.
"I see you, honey!" she called back, taking a seat on a bench nearby and putting her sunglasses on. The warm sun and the gentle breeze made her feel more relaxed than she had been all morning.
Her mobile phone started to ring, jerking her out of her little sunshine daydreaming. The number came up on the screen as "Unknown". She frowned, but took the call anyway.
"Hello?" she answered, pushing her hair away from her ear.
"Why hello, beautiful." the voice said. A deep, husky man's voice.
Eleanor froze. It was him again. The Joker.
"How the hell did you get my number?" she demanded.
"Oh, I got it from one of your little friends at the bank. Susan or whatever her name is." he said matter of factly, "She wasn't gonna give it to me, but...you know how it goes when people don't do as I tell 'em. The feeling of my pretty little blade against her pretty little neck was enough to get her to give in. It's aaaallllll good!"
"You son of a bitch!" she hissed. "Have you hurt her?"
"What do you take me for?" he laughed, mockingly. "Well...you'll be surprised to hear that I didn't. But I would've done if I didn't get your number, so she's one lucky lady, you have to agree. No animals were harmed in the making of this movie, let's say. Anyway. This is not about heeerrrr now, is it. Let's talk, Ellie."
"I have nothing I want to say to you. All I want to know is, why are you bothering me? It's been five years since I last saw you, Jack. What's this game you're playing?"
"Oh, I'm not playing any game, Miss Ellie. I just thought we could get to know each other again. Is that so wrong? Mmm, on second thoughts, don't answer that. I know what you'll say, but well...I really don't care about that, do I?"
"I don't want you in my life again, Jack. Leave us alone."
With that very calm and clear statement, she ended the call.
She looked around herself, feeling nervous. Elijah was okay, running around the park with his football. But she no longer felt as safe as she used to. The Joker knew her private mobile phone number now. She felt very uneasy, more so than yesterday. Was The Joker stalking her...and were the lives of she and her son in danger?
