Monsters
April woke up, covered in sweat. Her room was dark and she listened for the hum of the air conditioner, but everything was silent. She grumbled and climbed out of bed. Jake had fixed the damn thing that afternoon and it had been running so well. She pulled off her wet pajamas, hung them over a chair and pulled on some cargo pants and a cotton shirt. She really needed to do some laundry in the morning. She stuffed her feet into her sneakers and headed for the bathroom.
April flicked the light switch in the tiny bathroom, but it wouldn’t work. She wondered if the power was out or if the bulb was toast. It was probably the generator acting up, since the air conditioners had died, too.
She shut the heavy door, locked it, and fumbled in the dark for the sink so she could wash the sweat from her face. She had a lunch date with Jake and she didn’t need to have an acne break out before then. She smiled as she thought of Jake. He’d taken a truck into a little town about a hundred miles away to use the only phone in the region so he could wish his mother a happy birthday. He was going to pick up some more fruit in the market and be back in the morning. As she turned the water off, April thought she heard something high-pitched.
“Stupid old, squeaky taps,” she mumbled as she dried her face. The she heard something else - a scream. April hurried to get to the door - someone was in trouble. She slipped on the wet floor and fell. She got to her feet and felt all turned around - where was the door? Someone else screamed - a man and there was a strange sound again - something mechanical and high-pitched. Then there were more screams and shouts of alarm. A gun went off as she finally found the doorknob. April froze, just as she was about to open the door - something was walking passed - something big.
There was another scream outside and the big thing roared and moved away. It was some kind of animal - maybe a panther? A gorilla? April took a deep breath and opened the door a tiny crack. At the end of the hall was a huge, black creature with a big, long head. It had fangs and legs like a dinosaur. April gasped as she watched it. The creature paused and looked around, but then went back to eating.
“Eating?” April thought as she took the sight in. Her hand touched her cross as she realized what she was seeing. The creature was eating the intestines of a human being.
Fear seized her and she bolted from the bathroom without thinking. She had to get away from the monster! The creature’s head whipped around and it stormed down the hallway after her. April ran for the door. She was so close! If she could just get outside!
A second monster burst through the outside door, roaring. April skidded and slid to the floor, baseball-style as the creature opened it’s mouth and tried to bite her. A second, smaller mouth shot out of it’s mouth and tore her shirt. The first creature skidded behind her and she rolled away into the kitchen as they slammed into each other.
Both creatures fought for the door and wedged themselves in the frame. April grabbed a chair and was about to throw it through the window to escape, when she saw a third creature outside, tearing her tent apart. She looked around desperately. She needed a weapon! April tore the fire extinguished from the wall and pulled the safety cord off. She turned to face the only door, just in time to see a huge man - no, not a man - tackle one of the creatures. The other monster pushed through the door and ran at April.
April prayed and stood her ground. She fired the extinguisher’s contents into the monster’s face. It screamed and tossed it’s big head violently around, blinded. April wanted to run back out into the hall, but the man-like creature was blocking the door, wrestling the first monster. She looked around for something to hit the creature with and then she saw Jake’s tool box, sitting on a chair. She rummaged through it and pulled out his archaeologist’s pickaxe as the creature thrashed around.
April rushed the creature and swung the pickaxe hard into it’s head. Jake’s took bounced harmlessly off the hard bone. The effects of the fire extinguisher chemicals were wearing off and the creature turned to look at her, it’s eyes streaming. April screamed in terror and swung the pickaxe again and again until finally it sunk deep into some soft flesh on the monster’s neck. The creature roared in agony and collapsed to the ground where it twitched for a moment, then died.
April was breathing hard and her hands shook as she wiped the tears from her eyes. What was happening? Where was everybody? She turned to the door and there it was - the man-like creature.
The new creature made a curious clicking sound and cocked its head to one side as it looked at her. His black dreadlocks fell over his huge shoulders and April noted that he nearly filled the doorframe. He wore a smooth metal mask and had an armour plate over his chest. A small computer was attached to his arm and there were strong metal bands around his wrists. His legs were covered by mesh and there was a metal guard over his... April forced her eyes back to the creature’s face... she had not just looked at his thing, had she?
The creature clicked at her again and stepped into the room. April backed up as he approached, not sure if she should be afraid or not. He’d just fought off one of the monsters that had tried to kill her, so that meant that he had to be kind, didn’t it? The creature reached an arm out to her and suddenly moved more quickly towards her. April gasped and backed up until she could feel the wall behind her. Then she remembered that she still held the pickaxe. She lifted it up high and swung it down against the creature.
