Chapter 2
Balthazar awoke with a panicked cry, thrashing to get free of the bedsheets and scrambling back against the headrest. John rushed in, freezing at the sight of the demon, who was staring at him with wide eyes that glowed even more intensely in the dim light of the bedroom. His tail had curled tightly around part of the headboard and was helping support him as the adrenaline rush of waking wore off and his injuries made themselves known.
“Hey, calm down, it's ok.” Constantine soothed as best he could, approaching slowly as Balthazar closed his eyes and gasped deeply, drowning in pain. His shoulder and ribs screamed at him, roaring over the background agony of countless bruises and deep cuts. His chest and back were a mass of bandages, blood blossoming out from where he'd torn open the deep X-mark Lucifer had drawn over John's crucifix burn.
The pain dulled though, when cool hands touched his good shoulder, guiding him to lay back down. He obeyed, knowing the long, pale fingers that guided his movements without having to think about it. The soothing hands gently unwound his tail from where it clung to the bed frame, not seeming to mind when it coiled around a pale wrist instead.
“I need to change that. I'm just letting you know, ok? Don't freak out.” John informed Balthazar, gesturing to the bloody X seeping through the gauze at the demon's slim stomach.
“I'm awake now, Johnny. You don't have to worry.” Balthazar replied in a faint voice, giving a forced little smile even as a tremor ran through him. He knew that this was a safe place though, John's scent was all around. It had to be his apartment.
“Who says I'm worried?” Constantine muttered somewhat ironically, actions speaking much louder than words as he carefully peeled away the blood soaked bandages. Balthazar watched, focussing on John's deft hands instead of the rippling pain that was making his shoulder spasm and his lungs burn when he breathed. He'd never seen the exorcist treat anything with such gentle care, especially him.
“Ah...” Balthazar tensed for a moment when John wiped the blood from the ragged cut, the sharp shock of pain jolting through him. It was soon soothed away by John's fingertips, which gently traced the original crucifix burn. Balthazar watched, noticing the anger in the exorcist's eyes as he stared down at the ruined mark. It only lasted an instant, as John raised his eyes and noticed the glowing orbs watching him, quickly getting back to applying fresh gauze to the wound that had once again sealed itself closed.
“There. Don't pull it, you'll open it up again.” John instructed as he tied off the bandage, standing.
“Thanks, Johnny.” Balthazar whispered, probably the most sincere thing that had ever left his lips. John stared down at him for a moment before shaking himself, turning away.
“I'm gonna get you something for the pain, don't move.” The exorcist ordered, leaving the shadowed bedroom and lighting up a cigarette on the way out.
