Memories

“Stan? What’s wrong?” The only Stan that Lizzy could think of was the Vice Principle at Springwood High where she grew up, but why he would be calling at this hour she had no idea

“Well nothing is really wrong but I wanted to offer you a job, Harvey Baker our drama teacher just passed away and it would be a real grate help if you would be willing to take the job, unless you’ve found work there?”

“No, No I haven’t, what time is it?” Lizzy asked

“Oh little after seven….which would be a little after four where you are. I’m sorry Lizzy I completely forgot, why don’t you give me a call in a few hours and I’ll tell you everything then.” Stan said and she could tell he was embarrassed.

“Okay Stan not a problem.” She hung up the phone not waiting for the pleasantries of good bye, it was then she noticed something on the bed with her was the dark blue book from her dream. She carefully reached for it unsure, scared if she touched it that it would fade and scared that when she touched it the book would still be there. Very carefully she laid her hand on the book.

Lizzy didn’t remembered much of her child hood, her life before the age of twenty two was nothing but a black darkness preceded by shattered fragments that made no sense to her and if she tried to remember anything it hurt. When she woke up she had been in a hospital surrounded by other coma victims, they told her she was in a car crash when she was sixteen and that she had been asleep for six years. They hadn’t expected her to wake up, and when she did they didn’t expect her to recover. Again she proved them wrong, she only had four credits to make up to graduate and she did that while going through rehabilitation, she had left town after that mainly because everyone kept looking at her like she was some kind of freak. She got a job at a factory and made damn good money she went to night school to get her teaching degree for whatever reason that had always been something she wanted to do. She bought the house next door to the one she grew up through a privet lawyer and paid cash, she wanted to go home some day but it never seemed like the right time. Now that the economy had crashed and she was laid off from the factory and working as a privet live in tutor to a friend she gets a call saying she is need back home.

She sighed fingering the edge of the book absently, as her mind skittered across the idea of going home. She knew her house was fully furnished she had sent in stuff bit by bit. The boyfriend she was living with at the time had thought her nut to spend her money refurbishing a house half way across the county but like with all things in her life some gut feeling told her to do and she did. That had been what broke them up, and that brake up had put her name on the top of the list when the layoffs came.

“Guess that’s why they say don’t sleep with the boss.” She said to herself, then as if remembering what was going on she looked down at the book. Could this really be the one from her dream? She opened it and heard the snapping of the old spine, the first page had several clipping of a young girl named Brook Yeaton that was 7 years old with blond hair and blue eyes, one even gave her weight, height, and a phone number to call if you had any information. There was another that said ‘4 dead in ohio’ a similar article was below it with the title ‘Mike Becker, 4 found dead off main highway’. Lizzy absently thought it was silly to put the name of the man that found them and turned the page. She saw two more wanted posters like the one for Brook only this time they had two little boys about the same age named Bobby Glass and Bart Lattimer the articles spread around said that the killer had added three more to his total, she snapped the book shut and shoved it away.

She knew that she wasn’t going to get back to sleep so she got up and walked to her bathroom, and turned on the water. She could spend the last of her money to buy a plane ticket and leave tonight, she would have to stop by her lawyer’s office and arrange to have the key waiting for her in the mail box. Now all she had to do was to tell Sandy that she was leaving, a woman who had been like an Aunt to her when Dan had chewed her up spit her out and left her broken on the curb.
