Lexi’s hopes for a peaceful evening dissipated after only an hour. The bells struck the frame with a clank as the door was thrown open, admitting a tall red-haired man in mechanics coveralls. Lexi raised an eyebrow as Dan and a short dark-haired man she didn’t know followed him inside. The smell of alcohol was overpowering as they approached the counter.

The short man stepped in front of the others and motioned them to either side of the counter. “We heard you were giving Dan here some trouble this week. Can’t have that.” Lexi looked to the ends of the counter nervously as they advanced.

She stepped back against the prep table and glared at the three of them. “I think you guys need to leave. Now. Tony’s gonna be pissed if he finds out you were up here drunk and tryin’ to start shit.” The short man laughed, “You shoulda thought of that before mouthin’ off.”

Dan folded his arms, oozing smugness, “Wha- What makes you think we care whadda ‘bot lover thinksh?” he slurred as the mechanic looked her over approvingly.

Lexi began to feel around on the prep table behind her for something, anything, to defend herself with. “Listen guys, I may not be Tony’s favorite person, but I don’t think he’d appreciate it if you were to try anything…untoward.”

The red-haired man looked past her to where the other man stood at the opposite end of the counter, “Hey Dan. You didn’t tell me she was cute. I think I might have a little fun with her before we shut her up.”

Lexi’s eyes widened as the short man nodded his consent. Her hands closed on the still open canister of salt from earlier, and she sprang into motion.

Both men’s hands flew to their faces as she swung the canister in a wide arc, flinging salt into their eyes. Lexi vaulted over the counter and hit the ground running, only to be halted by the short man’s fist striking her solar plexus.

She fell to the ground coughing, unable to breathe from the blow to her diaphragm. Panic settled in her chest as Dan and the mechanic cleared the salt from their eyes and began to come out from behind the counter.

The short man walked over with a smug look on his face, certain that he had subdued her with a single blow. As soon as he was within range, Lexi snapped her heel directly into his groin.
As he doubled over groaning, she dragged him down by his collar and whipped her head against his face, bloodying his nose in the process.

Believing him incapacitated Lexi rolled into a crouch and eyed the other two warily; ready to flee the instant an opportunity presented itself.

That opportunity never came. Shorty approached her from behind and drove his fist into her ribs, sending her stumbling into the red-haired man’s chest. He laughed as she pushed him away, spouting obscenities and swinging at anyone dumb enough to close the distance between them.

Dan seized the opportunity created by her distraction to grab a cleaning rag and wind it around her throat, tightening it as she flailed, struggling to pull the offending object away from her trachea.

She could feel her muscles weakening as someone pulled her hands behind her back and bound them with another towel. Her vision was starting to grow dark when she felt herself being moved, and then draped over one of the stools at the counter.

Apparently the short man wanted her alive when they proved their point, and so, he gave the order for Dan to release her.

The minute the towel was removed from her neck she gasped, drawing as much air as she could into her oxygen-deprived lungs.

The mechanic seized her ponytail and jerked her head back, running his fingers down the side of her neck with a look of approval.

She forced her breathing to slow as her face settled into an eerie calm. She kept still as he ran one hand over the curve of her waist, the unbuttoning her jeans.

Dan stood in front of her and unzipped his pants, “Let’s see you run your mouth now.”
Lexi looked up at him through her bangs, eyes pleading. His face was smug as he lowered his jeans to his ankles.

In that instant she flashed a vicious smile, planted her heels on the knees of the mechanic and thrust forward.
Lexi felt a little flare of satisfaction when the mechanics knees made a painful cracking sound and he fell to the ground cursing.

She rolled sideways off the stool and sprinted for the door. ‘Just gotta get outside,’ she kept repeating to herself. ‘They wouldn’t dare try anything where they might be caught!’

Her mantra proved to be too much to hope for. She threw her shoulder into the door and continued running, only to have the short man tackle her halfway across the parking lot, slamming her into the rough pavement.

Stars burst behind her eyelids as her head struck the ground. She could hear the short man laughing behind her, dusting himself off and yelling at Dan and the mechanic to just do what they came to do so they could leave.

She heard the door open once again and listened to the sound of approaching footsteps in the sprinkling of gravel that always covered the concrete. They came to a stop directly behind her and began speaking quietly amongst themselves.

Fighting dizziness, she slowly, carefully arched her back, bringing her feet up behind her as far as she could. There. Lexi quickly hooked her feet through the circle of her bound wrists and straightened her legs, grimacing at the pull in her shoulders.

The mechanics face suddenly filled her vision. “You think that’s going to help you any?” He quietly asked, a slow grin spreading across his face at her feigned terror.

Lexi’s expression changed from terrified to malicious as she slammed her fists directly beneath his chin, rolling to the side as he dropped to the ground where she had been laying only seconds before. His garbled swearing and sudden motion drew the attention of the other two, and she brought her legs to her chest, kicking out and launching herself off the ground into a ready crouch.

Dan took one look at the blood pouring out of his friend’s mouth, no doubt from a bitten tongue, and threw himself at her. Lexi quickly sidestepped and hooked her still bound wrists around his neck, jerking back and catching his throat in the crook of her elbow.

The short man simply watched as she whipped around to face him, keeping Dan restrained by applying extra pressure with a squeeze of her arm. He gave a slight nod and Dan grabbed her arms, dropped down, and heaved her over his shoulders, flipping her onto the pavement.

Lexi cried out as her back struck the ground, all traces of air seeming to escape her body at once. She lay there gasping, unable to catch her breath, as the mechanic and the short man joined Dan. They stood there for a moment, staring at her with unbridled hatred. The mechanic struck first.

The next thirty minutes were an agonizing blur of pain, rage, and humiliation as they violently expressed their hate for her and everything she believed in.

A/N: Yeah, I know. Short chapter is short. It was originally part of chapter one, but I felt it was getting too long and split it up. I think it gave a more suspenseful feel at the end of the first chapter, but I want to know what you think! R&R please and thank you :)
