Screwed
Chapter Two: Screwed
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Matilda looked up to see Jackie staring at her. She couldn’t read his expression, so she looked away. She caught sight of a small table with guns, knives and ammo covering the top and she swallowed the lump in her throat, hoping he didn’t open the door for her just to kill her himself. Yeah, they had talked a few times in the hallway but she didn't know anything about him except that his name was Jackie Flannery and he seemed to always be drinking and bringing home a different girl every few nights. She hugged herself a bit more tightly and looked away from the table.
Jackie watched her for a moment, not knowing what to do. Running a hand through his hair, he sat down in an arm chair on the opposite side of the coffee table. He hoped she didn’t want to talk. He hadn’t a clue what to say to her. He never really hung around to talk to the family after killing someone. They sat in silence for a few more minutes listening to sounds of the street, until his phone rang.
Standing up, he walked over to the kitchen counter and picked up his phone. “Yeah?…Alright, yeah….Yeah, I’ll be there.” Jackie said and hung up the phone.
He took a sip of whiskey and ran a hand through his hair. “Um, listen,” he started as he checked to make sure his gun was loaded and stuck it in the back waistband of his trousers. “I gotta run out real quick. You gonna be okay here, alone?” he asked, grabbing his keys.
Matilda nodded absently, not really listening to what he was saying. He waved to the apartment. “You can sleep if you want. Watch some TV. Eat. Drink. Whatever, just,” he looked out the peep-hole. “Just stay inside.” he said, looking back at her sitting on the couch. “Stay inside until I get back. Understand?” Matilda nodded silently again and Jackie took one last look at her before leaving.

Once the pick up was done, Jackie joined some of the boys at their bar for a quick drink. They were into their 6th drink when someone sat down at the table with them. He looked at each other them, his eyes finally coming to a stop on Jackie, who leaned back in his chair and eyed the new-comer. He seemed oddly familiar. As the rest of the table settled down into silence, Jackie’s lips were pulled into a slow smile. The stranger smile at him and Jackie laughed, pulling the man into a hug.
“Holy shit! Terry! Holy shit, man!” Jackie laughed hugging the man.
Terry laughed and hugged Jackie back. “Nice to see you again too, Jackie.”
Jackie turned to the table, his arm still around Terry. “This is my best fucking friend ever!” he yelled happily. He turned back to Terry and hugged him again. “The best fucking dude there’s ever been!”
After telling his buddies around the table a little about Terry, the two of them left for his apartment for some beers and to catch up. Walking in, Jackie threw his coat over the back of a chair and grabbed some beers from the fridge. Terry buried his hands in his pockets and looked around at the small apartment. It was one large room; a combination of a kitchen, living room and bedroom. The bathroom he guessed was through one of the doors that lined a wall of the kitchen. Furrowing his brow he stared at the small bundle of blankets on the bed.
“Whose that?”
Jackie walked over to him and handed him a beer. Flipping his hair out of his face he looked over at the full size bed, covered in messy blankets. A small figure, with dark almost black hair, caught his eye.
“Matilda.” he said, taking a drink from his beer.
Terry walked over to get a better looked at her face. She seemed a bit young to be with Jackie. Her face was covered in tear stains and bruised. He furrowed his brow, figuring having him arrested for dating a minor would be better than having him arrested for murder. He just hoped it wasn’t Jackie that gave her the bruises. He took a drink of his beer and looked over at Jackie.
“A bit young for you, don’t you think?”
Jackie fell back into an arm chair. “It’s not like that. She was my neighbor. You notice the police tape across the door down the hall?”
Terry nodded and sat down on the couch. “What happened?”
Jackie took a sip and glanced over at the sleeping girl. “Father was a scumbag. Was holding shit for someone and was trying to pull one over on them by cutting it, but the guys tested it to make sure he didn't do just that. They got pissed. Took out the entire family.” Jackie looked over at Terry. “Including her four year old brother.” he said in disgust.
“Holy shit…” Terry mumbled. He looked over at Matilda. “Why didn’t they kill her then?”
Jackie looked over at Matilda again. “She wasn’t home. She came home after they were all killed but they were still in the apartment. We had talked a few times in the hall and she was picking up some things for me at the store, so she came straight to my door.” Jackie ran a hand through his hair and took a large gulp of beer. “Boys will have my balls in a clamp if they know I helped out an Itali… a guinea.” He corrected himself. “So don’t say anything.”
Terry looked at him and hesitated before nodding and taking a sip of his own beer. “Don’t worry about it.”
They sat in silence for a few moments, in which Terry noticed Jackie hadn’t taken his eyes off of Matilda. Taking a sip of his beer, he licked hi lips and looked from the young girl to Jackie. “You know, if you got feelings for her I won’t tell no one.”
Jackie looked at Terry. “I do not have any feelings other than annoyance for her.” He snapped. “She’s a fucking Italian.” he said and took a sip of his beer.
“Then why did you open the door for her? You said yourself she’s a guinea. Why open the door?” Terry asked.
Jackie looked over at Matilda and furrowed his brow. Why did he open the door? Sighing he ran a hand through his hair and let his head fall to the back of the chair and he stared at the ceiling. “The boys are gonna have my nuts in a clamp…” he mumbled, closing his eyes.
Terry chuckled at his friend and shook his head in amusement. He leaned back into the couch. “You know what you are, Jackie?” he asked, a small smile playing on his lips.
“Yeah…” Jackie let his head fall to the side and he stared at the sleeping brunette laying curled in his bed. “Screwed.”
