Part two
He returned to the cafe. There was nothing else to do, again. He was bored. At least they were a form of entertainment. What was it humans said? Misery loves company. Yes, they said that, and it was appropriate, because they were a miserable lot and seemed to enjoy making each other miserable. But he was miserable too and did not love their company at all.
That he understood. What else did he have to do but try to make some reason out of this unreasonable situation he was in.
‘Stop.’ It stopped. This time it was a tall dark skinned man. He stood still. A short and chubby blonde girl walked by and looked at him admiringly. She stopped and waved her hand in front of his face. She walked around him and examined him. Interesting, Smith thought. This virus seems to want to mate with that virus.
‘Go.’ he said as soon as she stood directly in front of him. He took a step and bumped into her and knocked her flat. He kept on walking. Typical thought Smith, typical rude selfish virus. I should teach it a lesson. ‘Stop.’ He commanded again.
She stood up and looked hurt. Brushing herself off she turned to walk and ran into him standing there, and fell back again.
Clumsy, Smith thought. You will make this difficult.
He waited while she stood again and looked at the man standing frozen. She started to walk away but Smith commanded, ‘see if he is well.’
The woman stopped and turned back and approached him curiously. “Are you ok?”
‘Go.’ Smith said.
The man bumped into her again. “I am so sorry.” He said. “Are you okay?”
“I just asked you that,” she commented as she stood up yet again.
“You did?”
Tilting her head she looked at him oddly.
‘Kiss her.’ Smith said.
He leaned down and planted his lips squarely on hers.
Once again she fell.
He laughed but helped her up. “I don’t know what came over me. I am so sorry.”
Smiling she replied. “I’m not.”
They walked to the corner together. Smith followed them. They exchanged introductions and acted foolishly as humans usually did.
‘What are you doing?’ Brown inquired.
‘Studying the procreation of humans.’
‘Procreation is not necessary.’
‘Is there some order from the mainframe?’ Smith responded angrily.
‘Procreation is not necessary.’
‘I understand that. I have nothing else to do right now, Brown,’ he snarled. ‘I will do what I please. If there is an order from the mainframe, I will comply.’
‘What is the purpose of studying procreation?’
Smith ignored the question. ‘I will report to the mainframe only,’ he responded.
The couple had climbed aboard a bus together and was gone.
Smith growled. Now he would have to start over again. Back at the cafe he found the same seat and began observing the humans again.
“Would you like to order something?” The waitress asked.
“No.”
“You have to order something if you are going to sit here.” The waitress demanded.
“I am an agent. I will sit where I choose.”
“I’m sorry sir, but the cafe rules are that only paying customers can sit at these tables.”
He reached in his pocket, tempted to pull out his Desert Eagle and shoot her but instead dropped a twenty on the table. “Bring me what ever you want.” He stated matter-of-factly. She brought him black coffee.
Cafe rules. How does a cafe have rules? Why do the humans even bother with rules when all they do is seek to break them? There is no logic in human behavior. Bored he left and returned to the complex.
Downtime.
