A Bit 'o Rescuing
As jailcells go Port Royal ranked with the cleaner side of the pack. At least the straw on the floor was sort of clean. The British Ensign at the upper door seemed to pity her, something Ketain thought was funny.
Two years of pirating off of Spain and France before her reputation set a heavily armed Spanish galleon on her stern at which time Ketain decided the warmer waters of the Carribbean was a better place to hunt prey. Granted the Midnight Starr didn't have as a fearsome reputation as the dreaded Black Pearl, but a reputation could be built upon. The thought that her courageous crew was at the bottom along with her ship made Ketain shudder, and was one of the reasons she had no fear of her upcoming hanging.
Right now the tall redhead stood leaning against the wall staring out at the sea, her moody green eyes seeking the distant horizon. Her broken arm was nearly healed and only ached a little when it rained. She had been in this six by six cell for nearly a month, it seemed that the Commodore and the Governor had differences of opinions on her fate. Ketain wasn't so sure it wasn't the Governor's daughter that hadn't started the row about her hanging.
Whatever the reason, Ketain languished in jail.
"Supper, Miss."
Ketain turned to see the British Ensign sliding a food tray through the slot close to the floor. "Thank you, Williams."
Young Ensign Williams blushed lightly and nodded, "No problem, Miss." He quickly retreated upstairs.
Ketain shook her head at the young man's response, the young blusblushed every time she spoke to him. Leaning down she picked up the tray and sat on the shelf that doubled as a bed. Bread and slop, same stuff as yesterday and the day before, the British have a no nonsense way of driving their prisoners insane, bad food, day in and day out. Still it was food so Ketain ate it, then returned to her window post. The afternoon sun waskingking in the west turning the sea into a liquid golden shimmer.
A scuff of a heel caught her attention and she looked up to see Commodore Norrington standing at the door watching her.
"Afternoon, Commodore." Ketain smiled, "And what causes my humble abode to be graced by such a personage as yerself? If I may ask that is."
"You are to be hung tomorrow at eleven bells."
Ketain smiled and cocked her head, "Eleven? I thought hangings were either held at dawn or high noon?" She laughed softly, "Oh, I it, it, you don't want to interupt your luncheon plans so yer hanging me before that." The pirate nodded, "I can understand that, Port Royal being the hub of society that it is. Wouldn't want to upset the norm, now would we?" Ketain movedr tor to the cell door, "Well, I thank you for informing me of my upcoming demise."
"Ketain Starr, you are being hung for your crimes on the high seas." Norrington frownt het her, "I would think you'd be a little remorseful."
"Hah!" Ketain laughed, "Why? The British think it's their right to rule the world. At least all the Spanish want is all of the treasure."
"Speaking of treasure."
Ketain chuckled softly, "Again? Norrington, I've told you a thousand times, I have no idea what you are talking about."
"The treasure ship Santa Maria de Francisco. The Midnight Starr was reported in the vicinity at the time of its disappearance." Norrington tightened his lips as he stared at her. "The Spanish will pay a handsome reward for its whereabouts."
Ketain laughed and moved back to the window, "I'll see you tomorrow at eleven bells, Commodore." Turning her back on the British officer she went back to staring at the open sea knowing it was her last sunset.
After a short time the Commodore left her alone with her thoughts.

eve ever a day should have dawned overcast and gloomy it should have been this day. But the sky was bright blue, the sun a golden disc in the sky, and the seas? Well, the seas were perfect for sailing fast and far. A slight breeze off the headlands that the fortress sat on cooled the heat just slightly, but at sea it was a strong wind that forecasted smooth sailing. Several ships could be seen tacking close to the harbor. Three already tied up at dockside with the HMS Dauntless keeping watch over them all.
Ketain stood at the window staring into the distance when the officers came to collect her for the hanging. Tying her hands in front of her they led her outside to the courtyard. Placing her below the noose they stepped back as the hangman moved forward and slipped the noose over her head and tightened it.
The courtyard was silent as the Magistrate stepped forward and began speaking.
"Ketain Starr, you areusedused of the following. Piracy on the high seas, fleeing from capture by HMS Dauntless......"
As the man's voice droned on and on Ketain grumbled to herself, "Why do they always forget to call me Captain? I worked hard to become a Captain. Just once I'd like them to acknowledge that." As she stood there she looked around the crowd, it seemed that most of the Port Royal citizens had shown up for the rare viewing of a female pirate her her hanging of course. The crowd was restless, some of them milling around, obviously trying to get a better view.
A flash of light bouncing off a buckle caught her eye and Ketain looked toward the far wall. The sight of a monkey riding on a shoulder made her smile slightly, her bosun had a spider monkey just like him. Then she stared a little bit harder and recognized the cheerful one-eyed face below the hat. "Collins." She muttered faintly, looking around harder she caught sight of Fells her first mate, and several more of her crew. So, they hadn't died on the Starr during the storm.
A distant boom made the British look around nervously, the high-pitched whistle of an incoming cannonball made Ketain look up, spotting the cannonball wasn't easy but her trained eye saw it just before it impacted on the far wall. The resulting explosion knocked quite a few people off their feet. Reaching up and grabbing the rope around her neck, Ketain swung feet first into the guards around her and knocked them off the platform. Letting go and standing still the pirate started picking at the knots with her teeth, all the while keeping a wary eye on the mayhem around her.
"Captain, let me help!" A voice from beside her and an handy dagger made short work of the ropes that bound her hands, a sword whistled above her head and the noose was cut off her neck. Ketain turned to see her first mate beside her. They dropped off the side of the platform and took refuge below it for the moment.
"Here, Cap'n!" Fells handed her a cutlass.
"Thanks." Ketain took the weapon, "What's the plan?"
Fells shrugged, "We be making it up as we go along, Cap'n."
"Great!" Ketain glowered at the man beside her, "Any ideas?"
"Iffen we be gettin to the harbor, a ship be waiting fer us." Fells whistled sharply, "Ye be up fer a swim?"
"On a hot day like this?" Ketain grinned, "A swim sounds fine. Where we going?" She groaned at Fells answering grin. "Off the cliff? Fells, do you have a death wish?"
"Nay, Cap'n, only death wish be coming iffen we be staying here." He turned and calmly ran his sword through a redcoat that had tried to attack him.
"Let's go then." Ketain left the small security of the platform stairs and ed fed for the outside wall of the fortress.
British Redcoats appeared and started to take aim on the Captain and her first mate, but there was something to be said about swordsmen against riflemen. For one thing, swordsmen moved faster. A quick parry with the cutlass moved the rifle out of the way and allowed Ketain an open opportunity to slid her blade into the chest of the redcoat. Spinning away from the falling body Ketain turned to find herself blade to blade against Commodore Norrington.
"Starr, I should have expected something like this. But you will hang. I shall see to it." Norrington advanced with a classic thrust which Ketain batted away with the flat of her blade.
Ducking to miss the next attack Ketain rolled and came up with a fallen sword in her right hand, the cutlass in her left. The shorter length of the cutlass enabled her to use it much like a dagger, albeit a rather long dagger. The two circled each other, Ketain confi tha that Fells would watch her back since others of her crew had also headed their way.
"Commodore, unless you wish to leave your pretty young wife a widow so soon, I'd suggest you'd back off." Ketain parried a thrust with her sword and with a negligent twist of her wrist set the Commodore's tricorn flying off his head.
The Commodore returned the blow but Ketain ducked below the swing and smacked the man's wrist with the flat of her blade, causing him to drop the sword with a clatter.
"Cap'n, the others have gone. We be needing to go, or they be sailing without us."
Ketain backed Norrington against the wall with a e, \e, "Thanks for you hospitality for the last month, but it really wasn't my style, Commodore." She nodded to her first mate, "Go, Fells, I'm right behind you." She backed toward the cliffside ledge and glanced down to see a ship picking up the men from the water. Turning back to the British officer Ketain smiled and tucked her cutlass into her belt with practised ease, "Until our nexetineting, Commodore." She turned and leapt off the wall, but not before she felt a hammering blow in her side shoushoulder.
Fells watched from the deck of the ship as his Captain fell but as she hit the water he could tell something was wrong. With a quick yell he dove back into the sea and was quickly at her side. Cursing fluently in three languages the first mate noticed that she had been shot twice. A rope dropped into the water next to him, with a quick motion he wrapped it around both of them and the crew pulled them onboard.
Ketain coughed as she hit the deck of the ship and fell sideways as she tried to push herself up, "Thanks, Fells." She saw a pair of booted feet stop in front of her face. Turning her head she looked up into the kohl-lined eyes of an old friend, "Jack, good of ye to help me." Then she promptly passed out.
