Chapter 20- The dawn.
Dash was the last of the family to wake up. Helen’s fist had been pounding on his door for the last two minutes. He groaned and yelled “I’m up!” at the top of his lungs. The pounding stopped and Dash slowly but surely climbed out of his bed. He wanted to go back to sleep for a few more hours, day’s would be preferable.
A few minutes later he wandered into the dining room and sat at the table for breakfast. No one was saying anything, but he noticed his mum and dad cast glances at the empty seat that Violet should be occupying. Even Jack-Jack noticed her absence and said nothing but “Vi, Vi.” every few seconds. Helen and Bob said nothing on the subject of their missing daughter and were trying to carry on the best they could and act as normal as possible.
Michael, better known as Shifter, was not at the table. He wasn’t even in the house. He’d taken off just minutes after Violet had gone away to the safe house and no one knew where he went. Dash expected that he was probably back on the streets, living like a dog again and taking down any petty criminal he came across. He didn’t care too much about Michael, none of his family did, except Violet. He didn’t know what she’d seen in him, but Dash couldn’t find it.
Dash started to pick at his cereal, but he didn’t have much of an appetite. He was worried about Violet, she had gone off the to the safe house yesterday and they hadn’t heard anything since.
Bob tried to pick at his own meal, but like his son, and even like his wife, their appetites were gone over worry for Violet. Helen wanted to say something, anything that would help them all feel better. Something like; ‘it was all for the best.’ or even ‘Violet’s in a safe place.’ but the words would not come.
To try and distract herself she clicked on the TV in the corner of the room. The news was on, that shouldn’t be, the news wasn’t due for another half hour. The reporter sitting behind the desk looked very grave.
“Further reports are coming in right at this moment. More bank robberies are now in progress. Early reports indicate that the criminals are members of the same gang that has struck at four banks already since 8 am today. As you know all four simultaneous bank robberies resulted in hostage situations and shoot outs with the police resulting in injuries to several officers and members of the public while the criminals escaped un-captured. Now a further five robberies are taking place at the same time. The gang members are using machine gun weapons, not of American manufacture. Police are being cautious at this time and prey that these current raids don’t end up the same way…”
None of them listened to another word, they all jumped from their seats and raced to grab their suits; Helen only paused long enough to pick up Jack-Jack from his chair. She cursed herself, she had wished for a distraction and now they had got it. Five simultaneous bank robberies going on across the city. They would have to separate (more separation) and deal with all the robbers alone.
************
Psychewave was glued to the television set. He was watching the news reports unfold with a growing happiness. This wasn’t bad for the first day; trying to rob every bank in the city, or as many of them as possible from dawn until dusk. Then would come horrors of the night The public were already beginning to panic and he and Syndrome hadn’t even made their move yet. And they wouldn’t until just the right time; when the city lay on the edge. Then they would rise and pull it back and be hailed as saviours.
He looked over his shoulder. “ALPHA. OMEGA.” He yelled. There was no harm in accelerating the process a little. He heard the footsteps of the two loyal servants approaching, their metallic footfalls echoed off the walls of the empty and abandoned subway station.
Psychewave took a moment to kneel by a cage, set up, in the corner of the room. Inside was a small and scruffy woman, her hair was limp and greasy and she looked undernourished. There was a smell of human waste emanating from the cage, but it was weak for the moment. “Dearest Edna.” He said in a mocking tone. “What do you think of me now, eh? Truly I am a genius to have created such a perfect plan.”
Edna looked out through the bars with her withdrawn eyes. They were dull and losing their life. But that life was being replaced with anger. “You will not succeed with this insanity. They will stop you Psychewave.”
“They will be in no state to do anything when I’m finished with Them.” Psychewave spat at her. He turned to see Alpha and Omega enter the room and look at him for orders. Psychewave to his feet and he even allowed himself a rare smile. He had his own plans for these two.

Helen swung down and smashed through a large window of the bank. The glass showered down around her and the criminals below had to run for cover or be cut to ribbons. A foolish manoeuvre to be sure, she might have injured innocent people, but it had to be done. The best way to fight the criminals was to take them by surprise.
There were less than a dozen hostages; mostly bank staff, understandable considering the early hour of the raid. They were gathered against the far wall. The massive metal vault door was open and large bags of cash were being piled up by the criminals. Now they were interrupted by Helen’s timely arrival. There were four criminals in all, all dressed in black.
As the glass rained down she leapt into a corner and placed Jack-Jack down on the floor. “Make yourself safe honey.” She said to him as sweetly as she could manage given the dire situation. Jack-Jack nodded and clenched his tiny fists tightly and his body turned into metal. He blinked with steel eyes and smiled with a metallic mouth. Helen knew he’d be fine.
She immediately turned her attention back to the criminals. They had recovered and were readying their guns, already too late to strike against the super. Helen stretched herself up, leaping high into the air; swinging from the light fixtures above she kicked out, stretching her legs across the room and knocked two of the men off their feet and flying into the wall. Their guns skidded across the floor. Helen dropped down from the ceiling and stretched out both her fists and punched the third man in the face and groin. He doubled over and cried out in pain but tried to shoot at her. Helen leapt up again and kicked the gun out of his hand with a stretch of her leg.
Behind her the first two criminals had found their feet and their weapons and again. Helen spiralled through the air and kicked and punched them at the same time across the temples of their heads. They went down and stayed down; unconscious.
Helen looked at the bank staff, none of them were injured. They were just quite frightened.
Behind Helen, the final thief, who had been unseen and forgotten in the brief confusion, aimed his pistol for her head. Suddenly he was being attacked by a ferocious red blur. It growled and clawed at his face. He screamed and dropped and rolled around on the floor. He tried in vain to beat the creature, but it was too fast and agile for his fists to even come close to connecting.
Helen swung a fist out and whacked the guy across the jaw and sent his unconscious body to the floor. A small red demon ran over the Helen and smiled at her with a lot of fangs and glowing yellow eyes. “That’s my boy.” she said with pride. At one the little demon shivered and shifted back into the body of a small child. He looked up at Helen and laughed. She smiled and picked him up. “You saved mommy Yes you did, yes you did.” She said in a babyish voice. Jack-Jack laughed as she tickled him under the arms. “I’m so proud of you, yes I am.” She tickled him some more, then suddenly became aware that she was being watched.
Helen cleared her throat and turned to the bank staff, her serious expression was back. “Have you contacted the police already?” A man in a suit nodded.
“We tripped the silent alarm a little while ago.” He said unsurely. He stared at Jack-Jack and to Helen but said nothing. Helen ignored the glances and looked around the room. One of the criminals was beginning to come around. She shot her fist across the room and cracked him across the jaw and he fell down again. “The police should be here before they wake up. Just in case, put them into the vault.” She didn’t stay any longer. She remembered the news report; there were more banks being robbed across the city. Some kind of crime wave was starting and there would be more people out there needing help. She stretched up to the window and swung out to the waiting city. There were sirens in the distance and not all of them were heading toward the bank.
To be continued.
