Midnight Visitor

.

I heard the mournful howl of a wolf and frowned. That would be the second time in as many days. Was it the male, my wolf?…there was a tingle of awareness that caught at me, someone on the edge of my wards, waiting. I put on a robe and walked to the doors that led to my balcony, before I even touched the glass, my sin began to sizzle and warm with heat.

It seemed to me that everything after that happened in some sort of dream state. I touched the door handles, and they opened soundlessly, letting in a thick blanket of mist. I looked down as it crawled across the floor, swirled around my feet, like it was licking at me. I walked forward, feeling only the pull of my curiosity, I knew I was safe, behind my wards, with my feet on the stone my family had laid. I walked to the stone balustrade, the rock icy under my hands as I looked down, down into that swirling mist and darkness.

For a moment, all I saw was the neatly manicured gardens, and the gravel pathways that bled out into the fields behind the house. But then I saw him, my wolf moving through the mist. He padded to the edge of my wards and stopped, sniffing the air delicately. I whistled softly and his head jerked up in my direction. He howled, the sound racing across my skin like magic. I waited for him to cross the wards before I backed up and put on my robe, and some shoes. It was just habit for me to step up on the balustrade and leap to the ground, let my magic fill me so that I landed soundlessly, the fog the only thing disturbed by my twenty foot drop.

The wolf ran around me, rubbing his face over my body like he was checking me for injuries. “Easy big man, I’m fine, I do that all the time.” he snorted with a shake of his head. I knelt down in the dewy grass and rubbed my cheek against his fur. “What are you doing here? Huh?” I raked my hands over him, scratching and petting until he was growling and rolling around next to me. But he didn’t show me his belly, only a dog, or a submissive animal would do that. This wolf was no sub. He put his nose to my throat and nuzzled against me. “I missed you too, you been good?” He drew back and shook himself. “No. Me either.”

“Cherish?” I looked up to see my father leaning out over his own balcony. “I’m fine, just visiting.” He saw the wolf and I saw his brows lift. “That’s a big dog honey.” I rubbed the wolf’s silver ears. “Sure is, but he’s really friendly. Don’t worry, I wont ask to keep him.” The wolf huffed at me and I whispered to him. “You can hang out as long as you want baby, I know you’re not a dog.”
“But you’re okay right?” My dad called and I waved. “Yes, I couldn’t sleep.”
“Okay, don’t stay out there too long, you’ll catch a cold.” He went back inside and I sighed, the cold, right. It was freezing out here. Funny how I was just noticing. I rubbed the wolf again. “Wait here okay?” He huffed and I stood up, used my magic to make stairs out of the fog to get the quilt off my bed. I spread it on the patio, under my widow and pressed a kiss to the wolf’s massive brow. “Wouldn’t want you to get cold either. I’d invite you up, but my mom doesn’t like dogs, or wolves.” he licked my hand and lay down on the quilt. “Night.”
