Chapter 21: Spared
***********************************
Eva drifts in and out of consciousness, she feels some one grabbing her and hears voices, she passes out again.
*********HOURS LATER
She flickers her eyes trying to get them open. There are lights and she hears beeping sounds and more voices. She feels dizzy and her vision is still blurry so she closes her eyes again.
Her throat hurts like hell, she feels like she has been vomitting for hours. She moves a little and can feel needles in her arms. She hears her name being called out.
"Eva, can you hear me ma?" she immediately feels secure at the sound of Dom's voice. Without openning her eyes she smiles just knowing his there by her side.
"Dom" she says in relief, she finally opens her eyes and sees him standing there with a look of concern on his face. He leans down and kisses her forehead.
"How you feeling?"
"Like shit, I feel like someone stomped on me and my throat is killing me!" she tries to sit down but he stops her.
"No, don't force yourself, the doctor said you have to get rest. Your lucky you didn't brake anything, some cuts and bruises but you'll be fine. They had to put a tube down your throat to pump all the water you swallowed" he sat next to her in the bed waiting for something and Eva knew what it was.
"Mike?" she asks slowly recalling what happened. She knew the subject was touchy but she had to know how Mike was. Dom's face goes glum and looks at her with regretful eyes.
"Dom? Where's Mike?" her voice was shaky and tears were forming in her eyes.
"He didn't make it Eva, I'm sorry" he holds her hand and waits for her reaction. Her mouth drops open and her tears fall.
"No, no ,no" she says shaking her head, she begins sobbing uncontrolably and Dom embraces her and kisses her cheek and wipes away her tears. Mia walks in and begins crying as she hugs Eva. One by one they all come in to see her, but Dom always stayed in the room. Brian was in uniform and stayed outside her door.
After they were both alone Eva explained everything to Dom, she told him what Mike said about 'them' setting her brother up and about 'Blanca' and the car, the accident and the girl she saw. Although she wasn't sure if she had hallucinated that when she almost drowned.
Dom told her when he went looking for her, he saw the red Honda pulling off on thad nad next to the ravine. He pulled over because he could tell there had been an accident by the skid marks and shattered glass, he got out of the car and saw Mikes car upside-down. He pulled her out while Vince and Leon pulled Mike out. Jesse called an ambulance but Dom didn't wait, he took Eva in his car and drove her to the hospital. When the ambulance picked Mike up, he was already dead.
"I remember looking over to him and he wasn't moving. I tried to get out but the fucking seatbelt..........." she begins crying again.
"I couldn't stop him from drowning" she blames herself. Dom preses his lip together and pulls her head up to meet his eyes.
"He didn't die because he drowned Eva. Someone shot him, in the head" his face is dead serious and Eva feels chills go down her spine.
"After the car flipped into the ravine, the person in that honda got out and made sure Mike wasn't walking out of that one" his voice is now softer almost like he didn't want to be overheard.
"They left me there to drown" she says out loud but thinks to herself 'Or was I spared?'
"No one is going to hurt you, I'll die before I let them get to you" Dom's face is stern, like he is stating a fact.
"Them? we don't even know who they are"Eva says.
"I do" Brian says as he walks in. He looks at Dom and sits on the chair next to her.
"I checked in to your brothers arrest and the person who he allegedly tried to kill, his name is Reynaldo Osorio. He's a big time drug dealer who's partner happens to be 'the' Blanca Capadona" Brian hands her a picture of Blanca. It was scary beacuse Eva couldn't remeber her features and now looking at the picture up close she still had no features, she didn't look real. Her eyes were gray like when a person is blind.
"Brian told me about it and I had Jesse look her up. Her profile goes from auto theft to murder one" Dom adds.
"Now, we're hoping that Reynaldo lives, he's the only one who can identify Blanca as the shooter, any other witnesses we thought we had are to scared to testify. She also had a sister but about a year ago she was murdered, the case was never solved."
Eva sat there soaking the information in, speechless. She cups her face with her hands trying to compose herself.
"When can I go home?" she asks Dom.
"In the morning, they want to keep you overnight"
"OK........I'll deal with this tomorrow, right now I feel like I'm gonna break into a million pieces." tears still falling from her eyes. Brian gives her a hug and leaves the room telling Dom he was going to stay by her door all night.
"I'm gonna stay with you" Dom says but Eva shakes her head.
"No, I want you to go home and get some rest. Let the others kI'mI'm fine. I need to be alone right now Dom. Please?" he agrees and tells her if she needs anything Brian is right outside her door or to call him. He kisses her lips and carreses her cheek.
"I love you" he says standing by the door.
"I love you too" he closes the door and Eva looks out the widnow and thinks to herself, 'I have to get my brother out of there. How did she find us?' she falls into a nightmare filled sleep.
