Chapter 21 – Soft Dawn and Hard Choices

When next he woke, James felt much more like himself. Gone was the tingling sensation, and, he noticed lazily, gone were the manacles from the bed. He noticed the dawn light spilling into the cabin, and suddenly felt quite alone. Come to think of it, he hadn’t felt so alone since he first left home to join the navy so many years ago. He sat up straight in the bed. Surely he couldn’t have actually become dependent on Jack and Will?! He looked around the cabin; his clothes had been neatly draped over a chair. /Will undressed me, then./ He dressed quickly, noting with a smile that the pirate duo had neglected to bring his wig.

Tying his hair back, he walked out of the cabin and saw a sight that he would later describe as two pagan gods dancing to the sunrise: Jack Sparrow and Will Turner were doing their morning ritual of Tae Chi on the bow of the ship wearing nothing but their breaches. Their eyes were closed, and their faces were in beatific resplendence. James moved to the top of the stairs, watching them, completely transfixed for the next half hour.

When they were finished, they stood straight and still for a moment, their eyes closed. Jack’s eyes opened, and when he saw James, he smiled. “Good mornin’, Jamie. Have ye thought about the good offer we made ye last night? Stay with us and be free, Jamie. I need ye. Will needs ye.”

James looked at Will, who stood perfectly still, hands at his sides, his eyes still closed. The only sign that he was listening was a single tear at the corner of one eye.

James almost melted. “I can’t, Jack. I have duties.”

“Duties to whom? The crown that has stuffed that yardarm up your arse so far that ye can see it through yer eyes? To the admiralty who keeps your collar so tight that ye feel guilt when ye handle yerself to take a piss? To the governor who couldn’t even keep his shrewish hellcat of a daughter from runnin’ off with ol’ Jack?”

“Jack Sparrow!”

James looked behind himself to see said hellcat climbing the stairs. He jumped out of the way, smirking and trying not to laugh. He was amazed at himself though. Only two months ago, he would never have dreamed of laughing. His heart had lightened tremendously since he’d rescued Jack!

“How DARE you say that?! I did NOT run off with YOU!

James couldn’t help himself. He started giggling uncontrollably, hanging onto the railing to hold himself up.

“And YOU!” She turned to James. “What are you laughing at, you overbearing, pompous windbag?!

Will opened his eyes and pounced, tackling Elizabeth and pinning her beneath him. “James is NOT pompous nor is he a windbag! And I believe you owe him and apology, since he recognizes a good joke as easily as the next man!”

Elizabeth knew when she’d been beat. Will NEVER attacked without good reason. She looked at James. “I’m sorry, James. Now, what joke did I miss?”

James was still giggling slightly. “My apologies, Elizabeth. It was only that, of all of the insults that Jack threw your way, you only seemed to take offense at his claim to have wooed you.”

Elizabeth giggled slightly. “Well, umm…how does one argue with the truth? By today’s standards for a lady’s behavior, he’s right. But I did NOT run away to be with HIM!”

Will stood and helped her up. She thanked him and looked at James.

“I honestly didn’t think you did, Elizabeth. I knew from the day I tried to hang Jack that you loved Will. I only wonder what happened that he ended up with Jack.”

Jack’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Ended up with? No, Jamie. He came to me as soon as the two of them were away from Port Royal. She’d used him as a right fine getaway from the drudgeries of bein’ a ‘proper lady’ to bein’ her true pirate self. And once on board, they each went to their true loves. Will came to me, and Lizzy went straight to Anamaria. Ye see, Jamie, among pirates there are NO moral constants. No rules of society t’follow. Ye go where yer heart leads ye. So I ask ye again, Jamie. Will ye stay onboard the Pearl with young Mr. Turner and myself, or will ye go back to a dead society with all its rules and fetters? Ye’ve tasted freedom, Jamie. Can the great hawk that ye are inside go back into a cage?”

James looked over the faces around him. The loneliness that he’d felt while alone in the cabin was gone. Will was watching him pleadingly. Elizabeth was smiling in friendship, and Jack seemed to peer into his very soul with those kohl-rimmed eyes.

“Jack…I…”

“Have duties ? Aye, Jamie. To king and country. But which one? Why not to King James I of the great country of Freedom? We’re all kings and queens in Freedom, Jamie. We’re never caught away from our homeland, as it were. If the surrounding countries don’t appreciate us, we weigh anchor and move our Freedom. Take what ye can; give nothin’ back.”

Will raised his hand and Jack shut up. James believed he’d have to remember that.

Will was quiet and to the point. “James, I know you love Jack, and I know Jack loves you. I also know that you and I love each other. There are many kinds of duty in this world, and as long as I’ve known you, you’ve done your duty to all others, leaving yourself barren and alone. Please do your duty to yourself for once and be loved and cared for like you never have been?”

All eyes upon him, James swallowed. He thought of going back to Port Royal and living out the rest of his days there…alone. He could feel his heart breaking even by trying to picture it. The torture would be unbearable to him now; he’d changed so much since having to take care of a helpless pirate captain. He looked at Jack and Will again, and his heart fairly sang with the pure emotion of love that he felt for them. “I give up.”

Jack’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “Give up, Jamie? I’ve not threatened ye. Give up to whom?”

“To myself. I feel tortured and empty when I even THINK of going back.”

Will hugged him tightly, weeping in joy. “You won’t regret it. I promise.”

Jack smiled. “All right then. Drinks all around!”
