HE Chapter 21

Rosie coughed violently; pushing the children to the floor she made sure they had hold of her clothes as she tried to crawl her way around. The smoke was like a thick blanket around them, the floor was the only place she could try and keep her children’s lungs clear.
’Mummy’ Megan cried, clutching onto Rosie, ‘Where’s Daddy? What’s happening?’
’Daddy will be back’ Rosie cried, feeling her way to the door, she could hear footsteps running in every direction, thuds, screams and every so often a blood curdling roar from the beast that was causing this havoc. Finally getting outside she clung her Aiden to her and lifted the weeping Megan onto her hip. Aidan stood, transfixed staring at the beast. As they stood staring over the grounds, they had a clear view of the giant. Its body snaked over the building; its face was peering round at the floor. Every so often it would spurt flames from its mouth, hoping to kill whatever had caught its eye. Every so often it would stop and begin to feed on whatever it had caught. Megan turned her head from the sight and clung to her mother’s neck. Aidan was shaking, ‘Mum we need to move’ he whimpered, trying to think like his father he pulled his mother back toward the castles main hall in the direction of the bunker. Rosie allowed herself to be led by her son, trying to ignore a sick feeling in her stomach. Where was Creedy?
As they ran, others followed and soon Rosie was leading the way to the bunkers, reaching them she pulled everyone inside as fast as she could. Knowing the dragon was mere feet away just over a wall, if it spotted them they were dead instantly. Rosie turned to check the skies and was relieved to see there was no other dragons around, she was more surprised when as she saw the beast take off into the sky, it was circling the building. Every so often it would attack one of the walls, or flame through a gap in the building. Still feeling exposed, Rosie ordered everyone to dig back as far as they could, and sit tight. Pressing Megan and Aidan into Tina’s arms, she tried to ignore their screams and tears as she ran away from her children into the night. She had them safe, now she wanted her husband.

‘Creedy’ Quinn roared, half furious that he wasn’t with his family half relieved he had somebody to help him shepherd his people. ‘Creedy, get back’ he called, seeing Creedy running dangerously close to the flames in order to get across to a bunch of women stuck under some rubble. With a leap Creedy jumped through the flames, he could smell his hair as it singed but shrugged it off and pulled at the rubble. Within seconds Quinn had performed the same death-defying leap and was puling at the debris alongside him. After they had released the woman, they carried them out and looked for another way to escape.
’Creedy over the wall’ Quinn called. ~
’Are you crazy he is over there!’ Creedy called back.
A roar from behind them caught both men’s breaths, slowly the turned around to see the beast circling the sky above them, with all the intention of landing and killing them instantly.
’Over the wall then’ Creedy roared. Together they lifted the woman, and climbed hard and fast, dragging their bodies as fast as they could, Creedy could feel the skin ripping from his fingers. The woman hanging off his back wasn’t helping at all, in fact her screaming was drawing attention to their whereabouts. ‘Quinn, you up’ Creedy called, hardly able to see anymore, the heat from the many fires around the castle was unbearable. The smoke was as good as blinding him, once over the wall he dropped, landing hard on his legs. Hearing a similar crunch of bones beside him he knew Quinn has made it over. ‘The bunker’ Creedy ordered the woman, ‘Over there go! Quinn are you ok?’
’That fucking hurt’ Quinn groaned, pulling himself to his feet, reaching out he helped Creedy up and they surveyed what little of the castle they could see. ‘Its over’ Quinn whispered softly.
Creedy glanced sideways at him, then back at the remains of their home, for a second the two men’s lives flashed before them, everything they had built, everything they had made. It was in ruins.
’I don’t understand why its here’ Quinn pondered, ‘Plus its huge, its bigger than any I have ever seen, and we have seen a few ehy?’
’Quinn’ Creedy gulped, ‘Why are we till outdoors?’
’Good question’ Quinn smiled, catching Creedy’s eye they both ran as fast as they could toward the bunker. Quinn stopped suddenly, ‘Whose that?’
’Who?’ Creedy asked, pulling the bunker open. AS he did he could hear the screams of the terrified families, peering in he smiled, the woman had set everyone up as comfortable as they could.
’Daddy’ Megan shrieked, Creedy took one look at his daughter and fell to his knees to hold her; the child was red in the face, shaking and a mess.
’Its ok, its ok. Nothing is going to get you’ Creedy soothed, thinking the child terrified of the nights activities.
’No D..d…daddy. I want M..Mummy’ the child stammered. Creedy stared at her, and looked up to see Aiden run across to his father from the corner.
’Dad she went for you, she isn’t back yet’
Creedy’s arms dropped from around Megan and he made to stand up, ‘No’ Megan wept even more, ‘Don’t leave me, not you too’
’Darling, I have to find your mother. Quinn! Get the door open’
Aiden pulled Megan from his father and back to the corner where he held her close, Creedy winked at him and made for the door, but Quinn stood in his way. ‘Quinn hurry move, that was Rosie, it was her she was looking for me’ another howl from above, causing pebbles to fall from the ceiling. Everyone eyes looked up, it must be above them.
’Creedy you are aren’t going out there’ Quinn stood firm in front of the door. ‘You must be mad, I cant open that door, everyone here will die’
’Quinn, get out of my way. I am going to get my wife’
’No’ Quinn stood firm, tears filling in his eyes, ‘I’m sorry Creedy I am sorry but look around you, if you leave and he sees you then everyone here dies.’
’If Rosie dies, I am dead, now move.’
’Creedy…’
’don’t try and get in my way Quinn, you wont stand a chance, she is out there by herself, I am going to get her’
’Then you condemn everyone here to death’ Quinn roared.
’So be it’ Creedy roared, trying to push past Quinn.
’No’ Quinn roared pushing him back, without thinking Creedy fist shot out, quick enough to knock Quinn off his feet, Screams filled the bunker as he hit the floor, Quinn span round and knocked Creedy to the floor, jumping on top of him he held him down as he struggled to be free. ‘Rosie’ Creedy screamed, ‘Please let me go to her, please Quinn don’t. Let go’ he struggled for a few more minutes then lay still. His heart and his mind were fighting a battle, he looked around at the fearful faces of everyone cuddled together. If he had his way he would be out there now searching for his love, then bringing her to safety, but doing so risked their lives. Lying still he started to cry, knowing it was hopeless, she was probably dead by now. ‘Creedy its not over yet’ Quinn whispered, releasing him and trying to pull him into a hug. ’Don’t touch me’ Creedy growled, pushing him away and sitting by himself in a corner. Thoughts of Rosie ran through his mind, and after a few minutes of sitting in silence he couldn’t bear it any longer. Jumping to his feet he pressed his ear to the door and listened hard. Nothing.
’Quinn there nothing out there, its moved. I’m going’
Quinn could see the desperation in his eyes and knew there was no point arguing with him. Pressing his own ear beside Creedy he found his words true, and realised it was silent. Just as they were about to heave the door open together they heard faint footsteps. They were coming closer, and a small hammering on the door. Jumping backwards, they pulled the door with them; Creedy fell off balance and stumbled against the wall, half crushed by the door. The pain didn’t mater though as he heard Rosie’s voice.
’I cant find him Quinn. Where is he’ she was crying and unstable, pushing the door away from himself he smiled as their eyes met.
’Dave’ she shrieked running at him, Creedy caught her in mid air and held her to him frantically.
’You stupid bastard, I hate you’ she wept, ‘Don’t you ever do that to me again, don’t you ever leave me’
’Oh I am the stupid one, why didn’t you stay here? I told you I would come back to you, when haven’t I?’
’Oh shut up’ Rosie cried, as he kissed her softly, ‘God I was so worried, so worried’ she kept tight hold of him clutching his body against hers.
’Er Guys, I know your pleased an all but can I have some help with this door?’ Quinn asked, half crumpling under the weight, luckily a few other men noticed his situation and ran over to help him secure it in place. Creedy fell backwards onto the floor; Rosie was still wrapped around him.
’I love you’ she whispered, opening her arms and motioning for the children to come to them. Megan and Aidan ran happily into the embrace of their parents. Creedy felt relaxed and content, as he lay on his side, hugging his children and wife to him. The day’s events all came flooding back to him, the agony of losing his child. The pain that rippled through his body due to the burns and cut she had endured. The fear of losing the things that meant the most to him, trying to push all his fears he felt himself slipping into a peaceful sleep.

Tina had lit a few candles around the place and sorted out places for the children to sleep. The adults were consoling each other for any family they had lost this night. Many were in tears and hugging, most of the children were crying softly, covered in soot. Quinn looked about the place, he hadn’t a clue what to do next. It was pointless trying to talk to Creedy he had been laying silently holding his family to him for the last hour or so, Quinn suspected him to be asleep and he didn’t blame him. The poor guy had been shaken emotionally and physically in the space of 12 hours, Quinn couldn’t describe the relief that had flooded through him when he saw Rosie burst through the door. Without her Creedy had no means of living, sure he loved his children dearly and would continue for them but he soul of him would have died along with Rosie. Quinn stared at the ceiling some more. Unsure of what to do for the best, where the hell was Van Zan? If he was hunting a huge dragon, Quinn feared he had missed it by a few hours. For some reason it was here, launching its hell upon them.
